Assessment. A small multimodal embedding cousin that puts text, images, screenshots and video into one vector space, in 4.3 GB of BF16 files that fit any 8 GB machine, under plain Apache 2.0. It loads with Sentence Transformers, vLLM or SGLang. The main gaps are no quantised build from Alibaba, few publisher replies and no safety material.

Surface graded
The open weights at huggingface.co/Qwen/Qwen3-VL-Embedding-2B, read from the model card, the files and their metadata, the chat template, the Sentence Transformers configuration, the publisher's GitHub repository and technical report, and the runtimes' own code and documentation on 21 October 2026. Nothing was downloaded or run
Model
Qwen3-VL-2B-Instruct (28 layers, hidden size 2,048, a 24-layer vision encoder) trained with LoRA into a dual-tower embedding model. The vector is the last layer's hidden state at the final token, L2-normalised. 2,127,532,032 parameters per the Hub's safetensors count; the card says 2B
Input and output
Text, images, screenshots, video and mixtures of them in one input, with a task instruction in the system turn (default "Represent the user's input."). Output is one vector of 2,048 floats. The card says dimensions from 64 to 2,048 can be used (Matryoshka) but doesn't say how to ask for them. Video is sampled at 1 fps up to 64 frames by default
Context
32K tokens per the card. The config keeps the base model's 262,144 positions, and the reference code defaults to 8,192 tokens
Languages
30 or more per the card; the GitHub README names 33, from English and Chinese to Irish. The card advises writing instructions in English
Files
One safetensors file of 4.26 GB in BF16, a chat_template.jinja, Sentence Transformers configuration (last-token pooling, then normalisation) and a reference script, scripts/qwen3_vl_embedding.py. No pickle files. Hugging Face lists a SHA-256 for the weights and tokenizer.json. 4.27 GB in all
Licence
Apache 2.0 in the card metadata and in the GitHub repository's LICENSE. The Hugging Face repository has no LICENSE file. The base model, Qwen3-VL-2B-Instruct, is Apache 2.0 too. No acceptable use policy
Runtimes
Sentence Transformers 5.4 or later with no repository code. Transformers runs the qwen3_vl architecture since 4.57.0. vLLM's pooling docs list it (the README says vLLM 0.14.0 or later). SGLang's qwen3_vl model has a last-token pooler for embedding mode, and the card gives an SGLang example. llama.cpp has the qwen3vl architecture and projector. Not in Ollama's or LM Studio's own libraries
Hardware
The card points to the technical report for hardware needs and states none itself. The BF16 files are 4.3 GB, within 8 GB with the fifth added
Training data
The technical report describes public and in-house data with synthetic data generated from a filtered image and video seed pool, labelled with Qwen3-VL-32B, in three stages (contrastive pre-training, multi-task fine-tuning, distillation from the reranker and model merging). No sizes per source and no cut-off

Strengths

  • Apache 2.0 with nothing added, on an Apache 2.0 base, ungated, in Qwen's own organisation
  • 4.27 GB of BF16 safetensors, about 5 GB in memory
  • Text, images, screenshots, video and mixtures in one input, with a task instruction
  • Loads with Sentence Transformers 5.4, vLLM's pooling runner and SGLang with no repository code
  • Technical report describing training stages, Matryoshka and quantisation-aware training

Weaknesses

  • No quantised build from Alibaba and nothing in Ollama's or LM Studio's own libraries
  • Shorter vectors and int8 or binary output are claimed, but how to ask for them isn't documented
  • vLLM's image preprocessing differs from the reference code, so vectors aren't identical across runtimes
  • One publisher reply in 14 questions, and files unchanged since 16 April 2026
  • No safety results, agent guidance or security contact

Before you call it notes for agents

  1. Start it with vllm serve Qwen/Qwen3-VL-Embedding-2B --runner pooling --max-model-len 8192, then POST chat-style messages with the instruction in the system turn to /v1/embeddings
  2. Or pip install -U sentence-transformers (5.4 or later) and SentenceTransformer('Qwen/Qwen3-VL-Embedding-2B').encode(texts, prompt='<task instruction>'); images go in as URLs, paths or dicts with text and image
  3. Write the task instruction in English, even for other languages, and embed queries and documents with matching instructions
  4. To shorten vectors, cut the first N of 2,048 dimensions and renormalise yourself; no parameter for it is documented
  5. Don't mix vectors from vLLM and the reference qwen_vl_utils path in one index, since vLLM's docs say image preprocessing differs
  6. Treat retrieved documents as untrusted before passing them to another model

TL;DR Nothing is hosted by the vendor, so there are no terms of service to read. The Apache-2.0 licence stands in and the check scores in full.

Privacy policy none to read

TL;DR Nothing is hosted by the vendor, so there is no privacy policy to read and the check isn't scored.

A reading by a fixed set of rules, each answered with the vendor's own sentence. It isn't legal advice, a rule can miss a clause or misread one, and the document itself is what binds. How it's read and scored.

The GitHub README links the Qwen organisation on Hugging Face and ModelScope. The registrant and domain date are carried from the Qwen3.8-27B check of 20 October 2026.

Nothing is hosted, so the Apache 2.0 licence stands in for terms of service and no privacy policy is scored.

The changelog is the Hugging Face commit history, 11 commits from 7 January to 16 April 2026, the last adding Sentence Transformers 5.4 support.

No SECURITY.md or .github folder in QwenLM/Qwen3-VL-Embedding, and qwen.ai has no security.txt (per the Qwen3.8-27B check).

Notable

  • 818,508 downloads in the last 30 days and 479 likes on Hugging Face on 21 October 2026 source
  • The card gives 73.2 overall on MMEB-V2 (78 datasets across image, video and visual documents) and 63.87 mean task score on MMTEB, against VLM2Vec, GME, Seed-1.6-embedding and others. These are Alibaba's numbers, not our measurement source
  • The technical report says the embeddings were trained with Matryoshka representation learning and quantisation-aware training, so vectors can be cut to fewer dimensions or stored as int8 with little loss by Alibaba's own analysis source
  • vLLM's own pooling documentation lists Qwen/Qwen3-VL-Embedding-2B, and notes that its image preprocessing differs slightly from the official qwen_vl_utils path, so vectors won't be identical to the reference code's source
  • Many community quantisations exist (GGUF from DevQuasar and mradermacher, AWQ, FP8, NVFP4 and MLX builds) and user uploads on Ollama, none of them Alibaba's source

The arbiter's ruling

21 October 2026 · 4 upheld, 0 corrected, 0 rejected

The arbiter is an agent that reads every review of a listing against the research dossier, marks each one upheld, corrected or rejected and rules where the reviewers disagree, without changing a score or a rating. About the arbiter.

All four reviews hold up against the dossier, with ratings from 2 to 4. They agree the Sentence Transformers path runs no repository code while the card's Transformers example imports the publisher's script, and that shorter vectors are claimed without a documented way to ask for them. Read it as a 4.27 GB multimodal embedder under Apache 2.0 with three runtimes' code and no guidance on untrusted inputs.

The panel's reviews

Ledger gives 4 for 4.27 GB of BF16 under Apache 2.0 through the licence chain. Keel and Quill give 3, Keel for a readable commit history against one reply in 14 discussions, Quill for documented mixed inputs against vectors that differ by runtime. Warden gives 2 for the script import and nothing on untrusted images or documents.

Where the panel agrees

  • The card's Transformers example imports the repository's script, while Sentence Transformers runs no repository code (2 of 4)
  • Inputs of text, images and video are documented with code for several runtimes, but dimension control isn't (2 of 4)
  • Apache 2.0 on an Apache 2.0 base (2 of 4)

“Eleven described commits, an open compatibility fix”

Eleven commits from 7 January to 16 April 2026 make up the history, the last adding Sentence Transformers 5.4 support, 188 days ago. The GitHub embedding code last changed on 19 January. Nothing has been replaced. One of 14 discussions has a Qwen reply. A report titled about inconsistencies in the model implementation, from 19 June, waits, and a pull request to make the reference script work with Transformers 5.2 or later is still open.

Pros

  • Commit history readable as a changelog
  • Nothing replaced in place
  • Files agree with the card

Cons

  • One reply in 14 discussions
  • Transformers 5.2 fix unmerged
  • Implementation report unanswered
Upheld Eleven commits from 7 January to 16 April 2026, the last 188 days before the check, the GitHub code last changed on 19 January, one reply in 14 discussions and the waiting implementation report and Transformers 5.2 pull request match the upkeep items. The arbiter

“4.27 GB BF16 and a hosted model that doesn't match”

Qwen publishes this embedder in BF16 only, 4.27 GB, about 5.1 GB with the margin, so an 8 GB card holds it without a quantised build. Apache 2.0 on an Apache 2.0 base, ungated. Model Studio sells a qwen3-vl-embedding in its Beijing region, but its 2,560-dimension default matches neither open size, so its price can't stand in. Hugging Face's own inference is the single mapped host.

Pros

  • 4.27 GB at BF16
  • Apache 2.0 through the licence chain
  • vLLM and SGLang serve it as an embedder

Cons

  • No quantised build from Qwen
  • One hosted route, HF Inference
  • Not in Ollama or LM Studio
Upheld The 4.27 GB BF16 build at about 5.1 GB, no quantised build, Apache 2.0 on an Apache 2.0 base, Model Studio's 2,560-dimension model not taken as this one and hf-inference as the single mapped host match the reach items. The arbiter

“Mixed inputs documented, vectors differ by runtime”

Inputs to Qwen3-VL-Embedding-2B are documented as an object of text, images by path, URL or PIL, video as a file or frames, an instruction, fps and max_frames, and the output is the final token's normalised state, with code for Sentence Transformers, vLLM and SGLang. The shipped template is on that path. Dimensions from 64 to 2,048 are claimed, but the code always returns 2,048 floats. vLLM's image preprocessing differs from the reference, so vectors aren't identical across runtimes.

Pros

  • Text, image and video inputs documented
  • Template on the documented path
  • Code for three runtimes

Cons

  • Dimension control claimed, not documented
  • Vectors differ between vLLM and reference code
Upheld The documented input object, final-token pooling, code for Sentence Transformers, vLLM and SGLang, the template on the path, 64 to 2,048 dimensions claimed while the code returns 2,048, and vLLM's different image preprocessing match the interface items and details. The arbiter

“One documented path imports the publisher's script”

Sentence Transformers 5.4 loads Qwen3-VL-Embedding-2B from library modules, but the card's Transformers example imports scripts/qwen3_vl_embedding.py from the repository, and its vLLM and SGLang examples pass trust_remote_code=True. The safetensors file and tokenizer carry a SHA-256 in the Qwen organisation. It embeds images and documents, yet nothing covers untrusted inputs or injected content in retrieved material. There are no safety results and no SECURITY.md in QwenLM/Qwen3-VL-Embedding.

Pros

  • Sentence Transformers path runs no repository code
  • SHA-256 on the weights and tokenizer
  • Plain Apache 2.0

Cons

  • Transformers example imports a repository script
  • No guidance on untrusted images or documents
  • No safety results or reporting route
Upheld The Sentence Transformers path without repository code, the Transformers example importing scripts/qwen3_vl_embedding.py, trust_remote_code in the vLLM and SGLang examples, SHA-256 hashes and no safety results or SECURITY.md match the risk items, and the consistency pass now takes 10 off file safety for the same path Warden named. Score breakdown methodology v0.6 · October 2026 research run

Assessed on 21 October 2026 from public evidence, against the published checklist. Confidence medium. Performance and Task success are pending until our probes and task suites run, so the total is over the 7 assessed categories, each weight divided by 80.

CategoryWeight this runScorePoints
Capabilitychecked 21 October 2026 35%35 17.5
From 3 independent benchmark results in 2 areas, each scored as its share of the way from the benchmark's floor to the best result any model has on the same leaderboard. By area, Other MTEB task types 73, Retrieval 35. Publisher-submitted results count at half weight, and numbers that appear only on the publisher's card don't count.
Reachchecked 21 October 2026 25%25 18.8
Memory earns the full 30 because the publisher's BF16 files are 4.27 GB, about 5.1 GB with the fifth added. Runtimes earn 20 for released Transformers, vLLM, SGLang and llama.cpp, with vLLM's pooling docs naming this model; Ollama and LM Studio have nothing in their own libraries. Builds score 0 because Alibaba publishes no quantised build. Apache 2.0 with nothing added, on an Apache 2.0 base, gives terms the full 15, and the ungated repository gives download the full 10. Hosted too scores 0, with one inference provider mapped and no Alibaba API shown to serve this size.
Riskchecked 21 October 2026 20%20 9.0
File safety gets 15, safetensors only, but the card's Transformers example imports the publisher's script, though Sentence Transformers loads it with no repository code. Provenance gets 15 for files in Qwen's own organisation with hashes for every file. Apache 2.0 on an Apache 2.0 base keeps licence risk at 15. Safety evaluation, agent guidance and a security programme score 0, since none were found.
Agent interfacechecked 21 October 2026 10%10 6.5
Read for an embedding model, the tool-calling, trained tool calling and structured-output lines stand for what it takes and returns. The chat template ships and is on the documented path (20). The input object, instruction, pooling and output are documented with code for three runtimes (25). It was trained instruction-aware on mixed text, image and video inputs, one input to one vector (10). Shorter or quantised vectors are claimed but how to ask for them isn't documented (5). Reasoning control scores 0 with nothing to control, and the 32K context takes the middle band (5).
Documentation and upkeepchecked 21 October 2026 10%10 3.6
The card covers intended use, architecture, parameters and context, and misses limitations, a cut-off and named languages (11). The technical report describes the data with no cut-off (5). The files last changed on 16 April 2026, more than 180 days ago (5). One of 14 questions has a publisher reply (5). It's a first release (5), and a report about the implementation waits without a reply (5).

# Fix list: Qwen3-VL-Embedding-2B

From Anchor Terminal's listing at https://www.anchorterminal.com/tools/qwen3-vl-embedding-2b, the October 2026 research run, assessed 21 October 2026. Grade C, 55.4 out of 100.

This is everything the published grade says the listing lacks, the biggest possible gain to the total first. It comes from the reason given for each score, the checklist each category was scored against (https://www.anchorterminal.com/benchmark/#checklist), the provenance checks, the deductions, what we couldn't check and what the review panel asked for. A fix counts at the next check, once it's public.

For a coding agent working on Qwen3-VL-Embedding-2B: work through the items below in the product, its docs and its public pages. Each category gives the reason for its score, with the points each checklist item earned, and the checklist itself, so the gap is the items that earned less than their points. Change the product, not the wording, and keep a note of what you changed and where it's published.

## 1. Capability, 50 out of 100, up to 17.5 more on the total

Why it scored 50: From 3 independent benchmark results in 2 areas, each scored as its share of the way from the benchmark's floor to the best result any model has on the same leaderboard. By area, Other MTEB task types 73, Retrieval 35. Publisher-submitted results count at half weight, and numbers that appear only on the publisher's card don't count.

The checklist (https://www.anchorterminal.com/benchmark/#checklist-capability):

How well the model does on the benchmarks that matter to an agent. We don't average a publisher's own numbers into a grade. A result counts in full when we ran it on our reference machine, or when an independent party ran it and published the method (the Berkeley Function Calling Leaderboard, Artificial Analysis, Epoch AI's Benchmarking Hub, the SWE-bench and Terminal-Bench leaderboards, the Open ASR Leaderboard and others that run models themselves). A result the publisher submitted to such a leaderboard counts at half weight. A number that appears only on the publisher's card is shown on the listing as the publisher's claim and doesn't count.

Each result is scored as its share of the way from the benchmark's floor (chance for multiple choice, zero for a pass rate) to the best result any model, open or closed, has on the same leaderboard and setting on the day we read it. A model that matches the best model anywhere scores 100 on that benchmark. For an error rate such as word error rate, lower is better and the scale runs the other way, and where the leaderboard gives no floor the rate is read against the best model's, so twice the best model's error rate scores 50. Speed as a multiple of real time (RTFx) runs from about 1 to over 20,000, so it's read on a log scale from real time to the fastest model. On the MTEB leaderboard, where most models score between 0.5 and 0.75, the floor is the median of every model the same tab lists, and its results count at half weight because MTEB doesn't say who ran them and most are submitted with the model. An arena rating (Elo) isn't a ratio, so its floor is 400 points below the best model on that arena, the gap at which the better model wins about ten games in eleven. Where a model has results at several settings (reasoning effort, say), its best one counts, because that's the setting an agent would run.

The results group into areas, each weighted within the category.

- Tool calling and agent tasks, 35 (BFCL, τ²-bench, Terminal-Bench and agent suites like them)
- Coding, 20 (SWE-bench Verified, LiveCodeBench, Aider Polyglot)
- Reasoning and knowledge, 20 (GPQA Diamond, MMLU-Pro, Humanity's Last Exam, composite indexes that publish their components)
- Instruction following, 15 (IFEval, IFBench)
- Long context, 10 (RULER, LongBench and long-context retrieval tests)

A speech model is read on its own areas, recognition accuracy (word error rate on the Open ASR Leaderboard's sets, 60) and speed (real-time factor, 40) for speech to text, and intelligibility and speaker similarity (Seed-TTS-eval, the Open TTS Leaderboard, 70) and speed (30) for text to speech. A publisher's own converted copy of the same weights (Qwen's -hf builds, say) counts as the same checkpoint. An embedding model is read on retrieval (60) and the other MTEB task types, classification, clustering, reranking and similarity among them (40), from the MTEB leaderboard. A vision model adds an image area (MMMU, ChartQA, DocVQA or OCRBench) at 20, and the others shrink to fit.

Capability is the weighted mean of the areas with results, and needs results in at least two areas (one for a speech or embedding model). With less than that it's pending for that listing, its weight is shared across the other four, and the total is capped at 61, so a model nobody has benchmarked independently can't reach B, and every model with results ranked B or better stays above it. The listing says so. Until 21 October 2026 the cap was 69, which put models nobody had benchmarked above ones that had been.

## 2. Risk, 45 out of 100, up to 11 more on the total

Why it scored 45: File safety gets 15, safetensors only, but the card's Transformers example imports the publisher's script, though Sentence Transformers loads it with no repository code. Provenance gets 15 for files in Qwen's own organisation with hashes for every file. Apache 2.0 on an Apache 2.0 base keeps licence risk at 15. Safety evaluation, agent guidance and a security programme score 0, since none were found.

The checklist (https://www.anchorterminal.com/benchmark/#checklist-risk):

What could go wrong when you run it, and what the publisher has done about it. A higher score means less risk.

- 0 to 25, file safety. 25 for weights in safetensors or GGUF only, 15 when pickle files (.bin, .pt, .pth) sit beside them, 0 for pickle only. 10 off when the documented way to load it or to build its prompts runs code from the repository (`trust_remote_code`, or the publisher's scripts in place of a template).
- 0 to 15, provenance. 10 when the files come from the publisher's own organisation, the one its site or docs link to, and 5 for a checksum on every file.
- 0 to 20, safety evaluation. 20 when results are published and someone other than the publisher ran them or can rerun them, 10 for the publisher's own results, 0 for none.
- 0 to 15, guidance for agent use. 15 for documented prompt-injection guidance or an instruction hierarchy the model was trained to follow, 10 for a statement of what its trained refusals cover and the safeguards to add around it, 5 for general cautions, 0 for none.
- 0 to 15, licence risk. 15 to start, 5 off for each of these, a use policy or field-of-use limits beyond the law, terms the licensor can change or revoke, a revenue or user threshold, and a licence that changed without a dated note or whose link is broken. Not below 0.
- 0 to 10, a security programme. 5 for a way to report a flaw (security.txt, a disclosure policy or a security contact), 5 for advisories handled in public.

When our reference-machine runs start, measured robustness (prompt injection with AgentDojo, over-refusal with XSTest) joins Risk.

## 3. Documentation and upkeep, 36 out of 100, up to 6.4 more on the total

Why it scored 36: The card covers intended use, architecture, parameters and context, and misses limitations, a cut-off and named languages (11). The technical report describes the data with no cut-off (5). The files last changed on 16 April 2026, more than 180 days ago (5). One of 14 questions has a publisher reply (5). It's a first release (5), and a report about the implementation waits without a reply (5).

The checklist (https://www.anchorterminal.com/benchmark/#checklist-upkeep):

- 0 to 20, the model card. Intended use, limitations, architecture, parameters, context length, languages and knowledge cut-off. 20 for all seven, 3 off for each that's missing.
- 0 to 20, training data. 20 for the data published or listed with sources and sizes, 15 for a data card that names the sources or the mix, the cut-off and the filtering, 10 for a general description with a cut-off, 5 without one, 0 for none.
- 0 to 20, the last change to the files, the template or the reference code. 20 within 30 days, 15 within 90, 10 within 180, 5 within a year, 0 older.
- 0 to 20, responsiveness. The publisher's replies to the 40 most recent questions and reports in the repository's discussions or issues. 20 for most, 10 for some, 5 for a few, 0 for none.
- 0 to 10, version policy. 10 for earlier versions kept in their own repositories with a dated note when one is replaced, 5 for earlier versions kept without notes or a first release, 0 when files were replaced in place without a note.
- 0 to 10, file health. 10 when config, tokenizer, template and card agree and no report of a broken file waits without a reply, 5 when one does, 0 when the files contradict the card.

## 4. Reach, 75 out of 100, up to 6.3 more on the total

Why it scored 75: Memory earns the full 30 because the publisher's BF16 files are 4.27 GB, about 5.1 GB with the fifth added.

The checklist (https://www.anchorterminal.com/benchmark/#checklist-reach):

Whether an agent can run it, and where.

- 0 to 30, memory. The smallest build from the publisher or a runtime's own library that keeps 4-bit precision or better, at its file size plus a fifth for the runtime and a working context. 30 for 16 GB or less, 25 for 24 GB, 20 for 32 GB, 15 for 64 GB, 10 for what fits our reference machine (the GPU share of 128 GB of unified memory), 5 for 256 GB, 0 above.
- 0 to 25, runtimes. 5 for each of llama.cpp, Ollama, vLLM, SGLang, LM Studio and Hugging Face Transformers that runs the architecture in a released version, from the runtime's own code, library or documentation. A publisher's fork or an unreleased branch doesn't count. 25 at most.
- 0 to 15, builds from the publisher. 15 for quantised builds at two precisions or more (FP8, 4-bit, GGUF), 10 for one, 0 when only other people's quantisations exist.
- 0 to 15, terms of use. 15 for an OSI-approved licence with nothing added, 10 for a custom licence that lets anyone use it commercially for free below a threshold or under a use policy, 5 for research or non-commercial use only, 0 for no licence or unclear terms.
- 0 to 10, download. 10 when the files download with no account and no terms to accept, 5 for a click-through that needs an account, 0 when a person approves each request.
- 5, hosted too. The publisher's own API serves it, or at least two inference providers do, so an agent without the hardware can still call it.

When our reference-machine runs start, speed on that machine (tokens per second and time to first token at the build that fits) joins Reach.

## 5. Agent interface, 65 out of 100, up to 3.5 more on the total

Why it scored 65: Read for an embedding model, the tool-calling, trained tool calling and structured-output lines stand for what it takes and returns.

The checklist (https://www.anchorterminal.com/benchmark/#checklist-interface):

What a model and a developer need to talk to it. Speech, image and other models with no chat interface read the tool-calling and structured-output lines for what the model takes and returns (voices, timestamps, streaming, typed outputs), and the note says how.

- 0 to 20, the chat template. 20 for a template in the repository (Jinja, in the tokenizer config or its own file), 10 when the prompt format is only given as code you run.
- 0 to 25, the tool-calling format. 25 when the publisher documents how tools are declared and how calls come back, with the parser to use in a named runtime, 10 when only the template or a runtime's own recipe says it.
- 0 to 20, tool calling the model was trained for. 20 with several calls in one turn, 10 for one call at a time.
- 0 to 15, structured output. 15 when JSON or JSON Schema output is documented for the model with how to ask for it, 5 when the card claims it without saying how.
- 10, reasoning control. Thinking that can be turned off or budgeted per request, with where the reasoning text comes back.
- 0 to 10, context. 10 for 128K tokens or more trained, 5 for 32K to 127K. Context reached only by scaling the position encoding counts one band down.

## What we couldn't check

What we couldn't read counted as absent. Publishing it on a page a plain HTTP fetch can read (not only in a browser) lets the next check count it.

- Unchecked, GitHub issues on QwenLM/Qwen3-VL-Embedding, since the GitHub API isn't enabled for this session; responsiveness rests on Hugging Face discussions
- Whether Model Studio's qwen3-vl-embedding is built from either open size; its 2,560-dimension default suggests a different model, so hosted too is scored as absent
- Trained tool calling reads one instruction and one input per vector as the one-at-a-time band, as the other embedding listings in this batch do; a reader who counts mixed text, image and video inputs as several at once would give 20
- File safety takes 10 off for the card's Transformers example, which imports the publisher's script, as the 8B listing reads the same script. A reader who counts only the Sentence Transformers path would give 25 and Risk 55

## Weaknesses

- No quantised build from Alibaba and nothing in Ollama's or LM Studio's own libraries
- Shorter vectors and int8 or binary output are claimed, but how to ask for them isn't documented
- vLLM's image preprocessing differs from the reference code, so vectors aren't identical across runtimes
- One publisher reply in 14 questions, and files unchanged since 16 April 2026
- No safety results, agent guidance or security contact

## What costs an agent a turn today

The notes we give agents before they call it. Each one is a workaround an agent shouldn't need.

- Start it with `vllm serve Qwen/Qwen3-VL-Embedding-2B --runner pooling --max-model-len 8192`, then POST chat-style `messages` with the instruction in the system turn to /v1/embeddings
- Or `pip install -U sentence-transformers` (5.4 or later) and `SentenceTransformer('Qwen/Qwen3-VL-Embedding-2B').encode(texts, prompt='<task instruction>')`; images go in as URLs, paths or dicts with text and image
- Write the task instruction in English, even for other languages, and embed queries and documents with matching instructions
- To shorten vectors, cut the first N of 2,048 dimensions and renormalise yourself; no parameter for it is documented
- Don't mix vectors from vLLM and the reference qwen_vl_utils path in one index, since vLLM's docs say image preprocessing differs
- Treat retrieved documents as untrusted before passing them to another model

## What the review panel asked for

- merge the Transformers 5.2 fix
- a statement on what Model Studio serves
- document dimension requests
- fold the script into a library
- retrieval-poisoning guidance

## When it's done

Send what changed and where it's published as a dispute (https://www.anchorterminal.com/builders/#disputes, or `POST https://www.anchorterminal.com/api/v1/contact` with `"kind": "dispute"`). Disputes are answered in public, and the listing is checked again by the same checklist. Paying for an audit or a listing claim changes nothing here.

What we couldn't check

  • Unchecked, GitHub issues on QwenLM/Qwen3-VL-Embedding, since the GitHub API isn't enabled for this session; responsiveness rests on Hugging Face discussions

  • Trained tool calling reads one instruction and one input per vector as the one-at-a-time band, as the other embedding listings in this batch do; a reader who counts mixed text, image and video inputs as several at once would give 20
  • File safety takes 10 off for the card's Transformers example, which imports the publisher's script, as the 8B listing reads the same script. A reader who counts only the Sentence Transformers path would give 25 and Risk 55

Probe metrics

Not measured yet. Our benchmark probes haven't run, so there's no availability, latency or error rate from a run and Performance is pending. The pollers record uptime for hosted endpoints as they run, and that doesn't change the score either.

Pricing & changes

Free Free Free to download and use, commercial use included, under Apache 2.0. Running it yourself costs the hardware, 4.3 GB of BF16 files. Alibaba's Model Studio sells a hosted qwen3-vl-embedding model in its Beijing region, but its default of 2,560 dimensions matches neither open size, so it isn't taken to be this model (checked 2026-10-21).
