Which one, for what
Browserless BB
Best for Agents that need a real browser in the cloud with stealth, proxies and CAPTCHA solving, and teams that want the option of running the same server themselves.
Ahead on
- Agent ergonomics, 78 against 70
- Security & auth, 53 against 43
Also in its favour
- A hosted endpoint, with nothing to install
- Runs on your own machine
- Free to start without a card
Watch for
REST and WebSocket routes take the API token as ?token= in the URL, which the docs give as the standard method
Selenium BB
Best for Agents that write test or automation scripts in any of five languages, and teams with a Grid.
Ahead on
- Reliability, 90 against 82
- Payments & pricing, 60 against 40
- Maintenance & community, 94 against 82
- Transparency & trust, 74 against 62
Also in its favour
- No key needed to call it
- Open source
Watch for
No MCP server from the project. The docs point to community servers and say they are third-party

Browserless
An OpenAPI document, llms.txt and a 14-tool MCP server with annotations on every tool make the service easy for an agent to read, and the free plan needs no card. The API token travels in the URL query string by default, cloud tokens carry no scopes, and no machine payment route exists.
Selenium
Selenium is stable, Apache-2.0 software on 4.51.0 with bindings in five languages, CI passing on trunk, an llms.txt and an agent guide added in September 2026. It has no MCP server of its own, Selenium Manager sends usage statistics by default, and Grid accepts unauthenticated sessions unless a username and password are set.
Before you call either
Browserless
- Send the token as
Authorization: Bearerto the MCP server. On REST and WebSocket routes it goes in?token=, so keep those URLs out of logs - Close sessions as soon as the work is done. Browser time bills one unit per 30 seconds, rounded up, idle or not
- For multi-step work with
browserless_agent, setkeepSessionAlive: trueon the first call and pass the returnedsessionIdafter that. Sessions are one-shot by default since server 1.33.0 - On 429, back off and retry. It means the plan's concurrency limit or queue is full, usually from sessions left open
- Match the path to the protocol. Use
/chromiumfor CDP clients and/chromium/playwrightonly forplaywright.connect()
Selenium
- Install with
pip install selenium(Python 3.10 or later) and let Selenium Manager fetch drivers. Do not set driver paths - Use
WebDriverWaitwith expected conditions, never fixed sleeps, and do not mix implicit and explicit waits - Set
SE_AVOID_STATS=trueto stop Selenium Manager sending usage statistics - Point coding agents at https://www.selenium.dev/llms.txt. Most Selenium 2 and 3 era examples use removed APIs
- Set
--usernameand--passwordbefore exposing a Grid beyond localhost. Checkhttp://localhost:4444/statusbefore creating sessions
