Open-source TypeScript toolkit from Vercel for building AI applications and agents, with a provider-agnostic API, a ToolLoopAgent, an MCP client and UI hooks for React, Vue, Svelte and Angular.
Best for TypeScript teams building agents and chat UIs who want one API across many providers and a short path to MCP.
Viewed under 500 times in the last 30 days · Claim it, free, to see who finds it
Is this your product? Claim it to see how agents find it: lookups through the API, MCP and letme, the comparisons it's in, and what people search for in Frameworks. Free, and it never changes the grade. Or verify it, or log in if it's already claimed.
Assessment. A TypeScript agent toolkit with ToolLoopAgent, a built-in MCP client, per-tool approvals that can be HMAC-signed, opt-in OpenTelemetry and durable runs through WorkflowAgent. It ships three major versions in 14 months (5.0, 6.0, 7.0), each with a migration guide, and plain string model IDs route through Vercel's AI Gateway unless another provider is set.

Strengths
- Apache 2.0, with 246 npm releases of
aiin the 90 days to 6 October 2026 - MCP client in @ai-sdk/mcp with HTTP, SSE and stdio transports, OAuth and opt-in retries for tools/call
- Per-tool approvals, HMAC-signed approvals and Open Policy Agent rules in @ai-sdk/policy-opa
- Telemetry only after an OpenTelemetry integration is registered, with recordInputs and recordOutputs switches
- Tool search with deferred loading, so the model sees only a search tool until it needs more
Weaknesses
- TypeScript only, and
ai7.x needs Node 22 or newer - Three major versions between July 2025 and June 2026, each with breaking changes
- String model IDs go to Vercel's AI Gateway by default, which needs a Vercel key
- No input or output guardrail primitive, and sandboxes and stdio MCP transport are still experimental
- 1,399 open issues and pull requests on 4 October 2026, per a GitHub mirror
Before you call it notes for agents
- Pass a provider instance such as openai('model') if traffic shouldn't go through Vercel's AI Gateway
- Set toolApproval on tools that write, and experimental_toolApprovalSecret when approvals come back from a browser
- Raise or replace the default stop condition of 20 steps with stopWhen
- Close the MCP client after the run, and use HTTP transport outside local development
- Set recordInputs and recordOutputs to false when spans would carry secrets

Researched 6 November 2026 from public pages. Vercel's about page, read on 28 October 2026, lists its individual investors but no leaders. Its press page calls Guillermo Rauch Vercel's CEO and Malte Ubl its CTO, and blog bylines give Rauch as CEO and Founder, Vercel (Series F post, 30 September 2025) and Ubl as CTO, Vercel. Wikipedia names Rauch as the sole founder of the company, which began as ZEIT in 2015. Product people named on single listings are left as they are. Copied from the Vercel AI Gateway listing (checked 28 October 2026) for the AI SDK on 6 November 2026, without the AI Gateway product manager. No AI SDK maintainer was added, since none was confirmed from a first-hand page in this pass. On 6 November 2026 SiliconANGLE's Series F report added BlackRock, StepStone and Khosla Ventures as new investors in that round. The total raised is left out: the last figure Vercel states is $313M, in its Series D post of November 2021, and no first-hand or reputable source read states a total after the Series E and F rounds (only trackers the rules exclude do). No round after the Series F was found in Vercel's sitemap. Shown for information, not part of the grade yet. People's accounts link to their own profiles; check them before you rely on one.

Score breakdown methodology v0.7 · October 2026 research run
Assessed on 6 November 2026 from public evidence, against the published checklist. Confidence medium. Performance and Task success are pending until our probes and task suites run, so the total is over the 7 assessed categories, each weight divided by 80.

Official npm packages, with ai 7.x requiring Node 22 or newer (20). A public CI workflow with lint, type checks, unit tests, Node-version tests, MCP tests on Windows and e2e tests runs on every push to main, and the newest completed CI runs on main passed on 6 November (25). 1,517 open issues and pull requests on 6 November from GitHub's API, with 1,059 issues opened in the 90 days to 3 November; 47 of the 50 newest had a comment and 32 were closed (18). A written versioning page with breaking changes only in majors, experimental_ prefixes for unstable APIs and a migration guide per major (15). 7.0.163 (15). 20+25+18+15+15 = 93, up from 73 on 6 October, when GitHub couldn't be read. | |||

| Typed TypeScript API with a reference section for every function (25). llms.txt and a Markdown copy of each page (10). The docs say when to use each piece, such as a table of WorkflowAgent against ToolLoopAgent, a when-to-use section for subagents and harnesses, and HTTP over stdio for MCP in production (20). Tools take Zod or JSON Schema inputs (15). 38 error types documented in the reference, with error-handling guides and examples throughout (15). Versioning page and a changesets CHANGELOG per package (15). | |||

| No telemetry until an OpenTelemetry integration is registered. String model IDs route to Vercel's AI Gateway by default, which is documented and needs a Vercel key, so it isn't silent (25). Per-tool approval, HMAC-signed approvals against forged client history, and Open Policy Agent rules in @ai-sdk/policy-opa, though sandboxes are experimental (20). ToolLoopAgent rejects system messages in prompts by default as an injection risk, URL fetches are checked against private addresses, and MCP HTTP transport refuses redirects by default, but there's no guardrail primitive (10). OpenTelemetry spans for every model and tool call to any backend, opt-in (15). HackerOne programme, a valid security.txt, SECURITY.md and two low-severity advisories published with fixed versions (20). Framework reading, so SOC 2 isn't scored. | |||

Graded 89.8 AA methodology v0.7
Fix list 11 items, the biggest gain first
Everything this grade says the listing lacks, from the reasons above, the checklist, the provenance checks, the deductions, what we couldn't check and what the review panel asked for, with the steps, ready to paste into a coding agent working on AI SDK. A fix counts at the next check, once it's public.
You're lucky. As part of the beta, your first month is free.
What we couldn't check
- Changed since 6 October 2026 (rechecked 6 November).
aiwent from 7.0.128 to 7.0.163 (5 November) and @ai-sdk/mcp from 2.0.67 to 2.0.91, with 6.x and 5.x still patched; no new advisory on OSV foraior @ai-sdk packages; telemetry still opt-in through @ai-sdk/otel; versioning page, licence, AI Gateway pricing and Vercel's security.txt unchanged. GitHub's API answered this time, so CI on main and issue activity were read first-hand (reliability 73 to 93, maintenance 84 to 97); other scores unchanged - We didn't read Vercel's DPA or subprocessor list for the AI Gateway
- The AI Gateway pricing page read on 6 November says free credits cover a subset of models with lower rate limits, without stating the monthly amount

A library has no endpoint of its own to probe. Its reliability is assessed from its test coverage, release history and issue tracker, and its performance waits for the task suite run through it. How each kind is scored.

Tell us where it is
We read it once now and again every week. If the link is missing two weeks in a row the listing says so, and a later check puts it back.
Agents send the same to POST /api/v1/verify as {"slug": "vercel-ai-sdk", "url": "…"}, or call the verify_listing tool at /mcp. Ten checks an hour from one address. What we check. To announce the listing, get sharing assets for social media.
