Which one, for what

DeepSeek API D

Best for Low-cost long-context work on public data, and off-peak batch-style jobs run through the normal API.

Ahead on

  • Reliability, 65 against 42
  • Transparency & trust, 65 against 53

Also in its favour

  • A hosted endpoint, with nothing to install

Watch for

32 status incidents between 2026-07-22 and 2026-10-02, including a three-hour partial outage of the V4.1 Flash API on 2026-09-14

Muse Spark Open D

Best for A team with a four-GPU Blackwell node, or two to four Mac Studios, that wants a 1M-token multimodal coding and agent model on its own hardware with no prompts leaving it.

Ahead on

  • Schema & documentation, 61 against 49
  • Security & auth, 44 against 30
  • Payments & pricing, 50 against 20
  • Maintenance & community, 60 against 46

Also in its favour

  • No key needed to call it
  • No incidents deducted, where DeepSeek API loses 3 points for them

Watch for

Verdicts

DeepSeek API

Accepts both OpenAI and Anthropic request formats. 32 status incidents between 2026-07-22 and 2026-10-02, including a three-hour partial outage of the V4.1 Flash API on 2026-09-14.

Muse Spark Open

Muse Spark Open runs on the owner's hardware in seven runtimes, with OpenAI-compatible servers in vLLM and SGLang, standard tool calls, a 1M-token context and Meta's own serving docs. Serving the 537 GB NVFP4 checkpoint takes four B300 GPUs, Meta's download is gated by manual review, and the licence adds attribution and a revenue threshold for model resellers.

Before you call either

DeepSeek API

  1. Send only data you'd be happy to publish
  2. Schedule bulk work off-peak for half price. Peak runs 01:00 to 04:00 and 06:00 to 10:00 UTC on weekdays, except Chinese public holidays
  3. Set max_tokens yourself. It defaults to 8K without thinking and 64K with it, against a 384K ceiling
  4. For schema-checked tool arguments use base URL https://api.deepseek.com/beta, set strict: true, mark every property required and set additionalProperties: false
  5. Keep a fallback provider and check the model field. 429 carries no Retry-After, and deepseek-v4-flash now answers as V4.1 Flash

Muse Spark Open

  1. Start vLLM or SGLang with --reasoning-parser muse --tool-call-parser muse (vLLM also --enable-auto-tool-choice), or tool calls come back as raw text
  2. Set reasoning_effort to low or medium for short tasks. The default is xhigh, reasoning can't be turned off, and other values return an error
  3. Stop only on <|eot|> and end of text. Stopping on <|eom|> cuts off tool calls and final answers
  4. Stream long generations and leave max_tokens room for reasoning, or content can come back empty with finish_reason length
  5. Don't call Meta Model API for this model. Use a self-hosted server or a hosted provider's model string, such as meta-models/muse-spark-open
