Best local AI models and assistants · All 204 local ai comparisons

Which one, for what

BitRun F

Best for A developer who wants to try ternary models on a laptop CPU behind an OpenAI-style endpoint without building bitnet.cpp.

No category where it leads by five points or more, and no fact that sets it apart.

Watch for

First released on 12 October 2026. Three pre-release versions in four days, one maintainer and no CI workflow

Docker Model Runner C

Best for A team that already runs Docker and wants local models served to containers and Compose services through OpenAI-, Anthropic- or Ollama-compatible routes, with models stored as OCI artefacts.

  • Transparency & trust, 73 against 50

Watch for

No credential on the API. The docs say any client that can reach it, including other containers, can pull, load and run models

Verdicts

BitRun

BitRun packages patched llama.cpp builds for ternary models into one download for macOS on Apple silicon, Windows and Linux, with a loopback-only OpenAI-compatible server. It is three days old with three pre-release versions, one maintainer and no CI, and its published power figures come from a fixed formula rather than measurement.

Docker Model Runner

CI passes on the main branch, and Docker has published two security advisories with CVEs and fixed versions for the project. The API takes no credential, so any client or container that reaches it can pull, delete and run models, and the documentation has no OpenAPI file or error reference.

Before you call either

BitRun

  1. Ask the user to install BitRun and run bitrun pull <tag> and bitrun serve <tag> first. Then call http://127.0.0.1:11435/v1 with any API key string
  2. Poll /health before the first request. The server loads the model in the background and answers only when ready
  3. Use a model tag from the catalogue (bitnet-70m, bonsai-1.7b, falcon3-1b, bitnet-2b, falcon3-3b, bonsai-8b) and keep prompts within its context window
  4. Treat the README's energy figures as estimates, and don't report them as measured power
  5. Expect small research checkpoints. Check outputs before relying on them for code or facts

Docker Model Runner

  1. Use base URL http://localhost:12434/engines/v1 for OpenAI clients and http://localhost:12434 for Anthropic and Ollama clients. Any API key value is accepted
  2. In Docker Desktop, run docker desktop enable model-runner --tcp 12434 first. Host-side TCP is off by default
  3. From a container, call http://model-runner.docker.internal on Docker Desktop or http://172.17.0.1:12434 on Docker Engine
  4. Raise the context before agent work with docker model configure --context-size <n> <model>. The llama.cpp default is 4,096 tokens
  5. Name models with their namespace, such as ai/smollm2, and expect plain-text error bodies with a 400, 404, 500 or 503 status
