Library
Hugging Face, Inc. · huggingface.co · who's behind it
smolagents is Hugging Face's small Python library for agents that write and run Python code (CodeAgent) or call tools as JSON (ToolCallingAgent), with MCP tools, any model provider and sandboxed execution through E2B, Docker, Modal or Blaxel.
Best for Small Python projects and research that want code-writing agents with minimal abstraction.

Assessment. A compact Python library for code-writing and tool-calling agents, with MCP tools, any model provider and remote sandboxes through E2B, Docker, Modal or Blaxel. The newest release is 1.26.0 of 29 May 2026, a critical remote-executor RCE took about eight weeks to fix, and the local executor isn't a security boundary.

From our research 7 facts checked against the vendor's pages
- Surface listed
- The smolagents Python library, read from the huggingface/smolagents repository (source, docs, workflows, SECURITY.md, tags), huggingface.co/docs/smolagents and OSV on 6 November 2026. Nothing was installed
- Agents
- CodeAgent writes actions as Python and runs them; ToolCallingAgent emits JSON tool calls. Managed agents give multi-agent hierarchies
- MCP client
- MCPClient and ToolCollection.from_mcp over stdio and Streamable HTTP, with a structured_output option
- Execution
- LocalPythonExecutor with an import allow-list by default; E2B, Docker, Modal and Blaxel executors for isolation. The guide says the local executor isn't a security boundary
- Run controls
- max_steps, planning intervals, step callbacks and final_answer_checks
- Telemetry
- None found in the source. OpenTelemetry tracing through OpenInference when installed
- Releases
- 1.24.0 on 16 January, 1.25.0 on 14 May and 1.26.0 on 29 May 2026; none since
Facts verified 6 November 2026 from vendor docs, repositories and package registries. JSON · Markdown
Strengths
- CodeAgent and ToolCallingAgent in a small, readable codebase
- MCP tools from any server through MCPClient
- Remote execution through E2B, Docker, Modal or Blaxel, with a guide on when it's needed
- No telemetry found in the source
- llms.txt and Markdown docs on huggingface.co
Weaknesses
- No release since 1.26.0 on 29 May 2026, and few commits to main since August
- The local Python executor isn't a security boundary, per its own guide
- A critical RCE in the remote executor (published December 2025) was fixed in February 2026
- No human approval hook, retry or resume built in
- Breaking removals such as WasmExecutor shipped in minor releases
Before you call it notes for agents
- Run CodeAgent with
executor_typeset to e2b, docker, modal or blaxel whenever the model or its inputs aren't trusted - Use smolagents 1.24.0 or later to get the remote-executor deserialisation fix
- Set max_steps and final_answer_checks so a run stops on its own
- Pass structured_output explicitly to MCPClient to avoid the default-change warning
- Pin the version, since minor releases have removed APIs

Researched 6 November 2026 from public pages. Hugging Face's own pages read (its blog and the founders' profiles on huggingface.co) don't call anyone a founder. Salesforce Ventures' page on its Series D investment (an investor's own page) names Clément Delangue, Julien Chaumond and Thomas Wolf as founders, and SiliconANGLE's Series D report calls Clement Delangue co-founder and chief executive officer. The CTO and CSO titles rest on Wikipedia. Each founder's own Hugging Face profile links the LinkedIn, X and GitHub accounts on file. Copied from the Hugging Face Inference Endpoints listing (checked 28 October 2026) for smolagents on 6 November 2026; no smolagents maintainer was added. NVIDIA's agreement of September 2026 to buy Hugging Face for $12.9 billion had not closed when checked on 6 November 2026 (reports expect closing in the first half of 2027, subject to regulators), so the status stays private and the price isn't used as a valuation. On 6 November 2026 every TechCrunch citation was removed, since TechCrunch's robots.txt disallows Claude, and FrenchWeb's seed report was dropped for the same reason. The Series D investors and the $4.5 billion valuation now cite SiliconANGLE, the Series A Lux Capital's own post, the Series B VentureBeat and the Series C Hugging Face's blog. Alex Wang, Aghi Marietti and Paul St. John, named only by TechCrunch, are left out, as are the May 2018 seed round and A.Capital's lead of it. The $395.2M total raised was TechCrunch's figure, and no allowed source read states a current total, so it is left out. Shown for information, not part of the grade yet. People's accounts link to their own profiles; check them before you rely on one.

Notable
- v1.26.0, tagged on 29 May 2026, is the newest release; main has carried 1.27.0.dev0 since then, and the last commit to main is 6 October 2026 source
- v0.1.0 tagged on 27 December 2024 and v1.0.0 on 31 December 2024 source
- GHSA-q9r5-6hrr-9ph7 (CVE-2025-14931, critical, ZDI-25-1143, published 23 December 2025) is unsafe pickle deserialisation in the remote Python executor; the fix for remote executors merged on 15 February 2026 source
- CVE-2026-2654 (SSRF through requests in LocalPythonExecutor, 1.24.0) and CVE-2026-4963 (code injection, an incomplete fix of CVE-2025-9959) are rated low, and both records say the vendor did not respond to the reporter source
- The secure execution guide says no local Python sandbox can be completely secure and points to E2B, Docker, Modal or Blaxel for isolation; the remote WasmExecutor was removed in 1.26.0 source

A public tests workflow runs pytest on Python 3.10 and 3.12 for pushes and pull requests; whether main passes wasn't read (15). 416 open issues and 1,045 open issues and pull requests on 6 November, with 144 issues opened in the 90 days to 3 November. The docs say when to use CodeAgent or ToolCallingAgent and when a sandbox is needed (17). Tools declare typed inputs in a schema dictionary or from a decorated function (12). Graded 58.7 C methodology v0.7
Fix list 15 items, the biggest gain first
Everything this grade says the listing lacks, from the reasons above, the checklist, the provenance checks, the deductions, what we couldn't check and what the review panel asked for, with the steps, ready to paste into a coding agent working on smolagents. A fix counts at the next check, once it's public.
You're lucky. As part of the beta, your first month is free.
What we couldn't check
- unchecked: whether the tests workflow passes on main; the newest runs listed for main on 6 November were documentation uploads
- unchecked: whether CVE-2026-4963 (code injection in LocalPythonExecutor) is fixed in a released version; OSV lists it as affecting 1.25.0.dev0 with no fixed version
- PyPI's project pages answered a bot check, so release dates come from the repository's tags
