Which one, for what
Pipecat B
Best for Python teams that want to own a voice agent's pipeline, pick each speech and model provider, and host it themselves or on Pipecat Cloud.
Ahead on
- Reliability, 72 against 41
- Schema & documentation, 90 against 69
- Payments & pricing, 60 against 40
- Maintenance & community, 87 against 65
- Transparency & trust, 83 against 70
Also in its favour
- No key needed to call it
- Open source
Watch for
No tool-approval or confirmation step, and no prompt-injection guidance, for tools that act on a caller's speech
Best for English voice agents on Rime's cloud that want one speech-to-speech model with their own tools, and teams moving an OpenAI Realtime beta client who can bridge phone audio themselves.
Also in its favour
- A hosted endpoint, with nothing to install
- No incidents deducted, where Pipecat loses 4 points for them
Watch for
Rime's status page had no Prism component on launch day, and there is no incident history for it

Verdicts
Pipecat
A BSD-2-Clause Python framework with dozens of speech, model and transport integrations, an MCP client that filters tools and pins arguments, and eight releases in 90 days. It has no tool-approval step, and 1.12.0 can send OPENAI_API_KEY to other OpenAI-compatible providers when no key is passed, a flaw fixed on main but not yet released.
Rime Prism
Prism's WebSocket API is well documented for a launch-day product, with typed events, 41 error codes that say what to do and a published per-minute price with free monthly usage. It has no Prism component or history on Rime's status page, no published concurrency limit, alpha SDKs, English only, and no data-handling statement that covers caller audio.
Before you call either
Pipecat
- Pass
api_keyexplicitly to every OpenAI-compatible service such as Groq, Cerebras or OpenRouter. On 1.12.0 a missing key sendsOPENAI_API_KEYto that provider - Pass
tools_filtertoMCPClientso only the tools the call needs reach the model, and usetools_argumentsfor values the model must not choose - Gate tools that book, pay or send in your own handler. Pipecat has no approval step, and a caller's speech goes straight to the model
- Keep the development runner on localhost. Its
/start,/dailyand dial-in webhook endpoints take requests from anyone by design - Pin a minor version and read the breaking-change flags in CHANGELOG.md before upgrading, since minor releases remove and rename APIs
Rime Prism
- Connect from a backend with
Authorization: Bearer, since Prism has no browser tokens and reads no query parameters. - Send
session.updatebefore any audio, or every append fails withsession_not_initialized. - Keep streaming audio, silence included, while Prism speaks, because it finds turn ends and interruptions from that audio.
- Ask for the continuation after each tool result, since Prism doesn't resume on its own, and never rerun a call with an unknown outcome.
- Pin the exact SDK version, because the SDKs are alpha and a new release can change the API.
