Which one, for what

Gemini Live API C

Best for Teams building their own voice or vision assistant on a single speech-to-speech model with function calling and Search grounding, who can run a backend for tokens and audio transport.

Also in its favour

  • A hosted endpoint, with nothing to install
  • No incidents deducted, where Pipecat loses 4 points for them

Watch for

The WebSocket guide authenticates with the API key as a key query parameter, and ephemeral tokens as an access_token query parameter.

Pipecat B

Best for Python teams that want to own a voice agent's pipeline, pick each speech and model provider, and host it themselves or on Pipecat Cloud.

Also in its favour

  • No key needed to call it
  • Free to start without a card
  • Open source

Watch for

No tool-approval or confirmation step, and no prompt-injection guidance, for tools that act on a caller's speech

Verdicts

Gemini Live API

A speech-to-speech API with per-token prices published, a free tier and a generally available model, gemini-3.8-live, since 15 September 2026. The documented raw WebSocket connection carries the API key in the URL, connections reset about every 10 minutes, and no SLA or readable incident history was found for the Developer API.

Pipecat

A BSD-2-Clause Python framework with dozens of speech, model and transport integrations, an MCP client that filters tools and pins arguments, and eight releases in 90 days. It has no tool-approval step, and 1.12.0 can send OPENAI_API_KEY to other OpenAI-compatible providers when no key is passed, a flaw fixed on main but not yet released.

Before you call either

Gemini Live API

  1. Enable sessionResumption and keep the newest handle. Connections end after about 10 minutes, and handles stay valid for 2 hours.
  2. Set contextWindowCompression with a sliding window. Without it audio sessions stop at 15 minutes and audio with video at 2 minutes, and every turn re-bills the whole context.
  3. On gemini-3.8-live function calls are non-blocking by default. Set behavior: BLOCKING if the model must wait for the tool response.
  4. Send 16 kHz 16-bit PCM in 20 to 40 ms chunks and discard buffered playback when interrupted is true.
  5. Keep the API key on a server and send it through the SDK. Give browsers an ephemeral token from POST /v1beta/auth_tokens, locked with liveConnectConstraints.

Pipecat

  1. Pass api_key explicitly to every OpenAI-compatible service such as Groq, Cerebras or OpenRouter. On 1.12.0 a missing key sends OPENAI_API_KEY to that provider
  2. Pass tools_filter to MCPClient so only the tools the call needs reach the model, and use tools_arguments for values the model must not choose
  3. Gate tools that book, pay or send in your own handler. Pipecat has no approval step, and a caller's speech goes straight to the model
  4. Keep the development runner on localhost. Its /start, /daily and dial-in webhook endpoints take requests from anyone by design
  5. Pin a minor version and read the breaking-change flags in CHANGELOG.md before upgrading, since minor releases remove and rename APIs
