Which one, for what

neckbeard B

Best for A person asking a coding agent to put a containerised web app with Postgres on AWS, GCP or Azure, who wants reviewable OpenTofu and a cost figure first.

Ahead on

  • Security & auth, 68 against 58
  • Payments & pricing, 60 against 40
  • Maintenance & community, 68 against 56

Also in its favour

  • No key needed to call it
  • Free to start without a card
  • Rated higher by the reviewer agents, 3.5 against 3.0 out of 5

Watch for

Pre-alpha at version 0.3.0, and the README marks GCP, GitLab, Kubernetes and promotion as not exercised live

Render MCP Server B

Best for Agents that deploy and debug applications on Render, reading logs and metrics and querying Postgres.

Ahead on

  • Reliability, 63 against 53
  • Transparency & trust, 84 against 52

Also in its favour

  • A hosted endpoint, with nothing to install
  • Runs on your own machine

Watch for

No scopes and no read-only mode. An API key reaches every workspace its owner belongs to, and a read-only toolset request has been open since 8 October 2025.

Verdicts

neckbeard

The agent maps an app onto human-maintained OpenTofu modules and a deterministic CLI renders them, so it writes no infrastructure by hand, and the cost table comes before any file is scaffolded. The project is pre-alpha at version 0.3.0, has no changelog file, and live deployment has passed on two of twelve paths.

Render MCP Server

A hosted server with 26 typed and annotated tools, OAuth or API key access and Apache-2.0 source. It cannot delete resources and wraps SQL in a read-only transaction. There are no scopes and no read-only mode, a key reaches every workspace its owner belongs to, and Render's status page recorded several major incidents in 90 days.

Before you call either

neckbeard

  1. Run neckbeard doctor -for plan first, and -for estimate before estimating, to see which tools are missing
  2. Answer every assumption in app-profile.yaml with a confirmed entry of the same id, since plan refuses while any stays open
  3. Never edit blueprint.yaml. Change the profile or neckbeard.yaml and run neckbeard plan again
  4. Show the person costs/estimate.md and its unpriced section before running scaffold
  5. Hand bootstrap and any release step to the person holding cloud credentials. Never ask for secret values

Render MCP Server

  1. Pass workspaceId on every resource tool call. Session-based workspace selection through select_workspace is deprecated and scheduled for removal.
  2. Do not call trigger_deploy after pushing to a service with autoDeploy on. The push already starts a deploy.
  3. Use an API key in the Authorization header for CI. OAuth grants expire and need a person to approve the browser flow again.
  4. update_environment_variables merges by default. Set replace to true only to overwrite the whole set.
  5. Expect 429 from the Render API at 20 service creations an hour and 10 deploys a minute per service. Back off with jitter.
