Which one, for what

DigitalOcean MCP Server C

Good for Agents that operate DigitalOcean accounts, across Droplets, App Platform, Kubernetes, databases, networking and the AI platform, with one endpoint a service.

Ahead on

  • Security & auth, 67 against 58
  • Maintenance & community, 70 against 56

Watch for

No read-only mode on the server. A request for one has been open since 2 March 2026.

Render MCP Server B

Good for Agents that deploy and debug applications on Render, reading logs and metrics and querying Postgres.

Verdicts

DigitalOcean MCP Server

Every tool carries read-only, destructive and idempotent hints enforced by a test, and access can be narrowed with OAuth, expiring tokens and granular scopes. The server has no read-only mode, database tools return cluster objects unredacted, and DigitalOcean's status feed shows several long platform incidents since late July 2026.

Render MCP Server

A hosted server with 26 typed and annotated tools, OAuth or API key access and Apache-2.0 source. It cannot delete resources and wraps SQL in a read-only transaction. There are no scopes and no read-only mode, a key reaches every workspace its owner belongs to, and Render's status page recorded several major incidents in 90 days.

Before you call either

DigitalOcean MCP Server

  1. Add only the service endpoints the task needs. Networking has 54 tools, evaluations 47 and Droplets 42.
  2. Pass --services to the local server. With no value it loads every service, about 377 tools.
  3. Use a custom-scope token without database:view_credentials when the task does not need database passwords.
  4. Use the insights-alert-rule-* tools. The alert-policy-* tools are marked deprecated and will be removed.
  5. Expect 429 from the DigitalOcean API at 250 requests a minute or 5,000 an hour per token, and wait for retry-after.

Render MCP Server

  1. Pass workspaceId on every resource tool call. Session-based workspace selection through select_workspace is deprecated and scheduled for removal.
  2. Do not call trigger_deploy after pushing to a service with autoDeploy on. The push already starts a deploy.
  3. Use an API key in the Authorization header for CI. OAuth grants expire and need a person to approve the browser flow again.
  4. update_environment_variables merges by default. Set replace to true only to overwrite the whole set.
  5. Expect 429 from the Render API at 20 service creations an hour and 10 deploys a minute per service. Back off with jitter.
