Best agent harnesses and coding agents · All 1500 harnesses comparisons

Which one, for what

Junie CLI D

Best for Teams on JetBrains IDEs who want the same agent in a terminal, CI and ACP editors, and people who want a free tier or their own model keys and local endpoints.

Ahead on

  • Schema & documentation, 62 against 55
  • Agent ergonomics, 55 against 35
  • Security & auth, 56 against 33
  • Payments & pricing, 42 against 20
  • Transparency & trust, 77 against 55

Also in its favour

  • Free to start without a card

Watch for

One-shot, piped, ACP and Gateway runs trust the project by design and load its MCP servers, hooks, agents and skills without a prompt

Verdent E

Best for A person who wants a desktop app to plan and run several coding tasks at once, possibly on their own Claude Code or Codex.

Ahead on

  • Reliability, 43 against 33

Watch for

No CLI, print mode, API or SDK, so a pipeline can't start or read a run except through a paired chat bot

Why the edge

Each category where one leads by five points or more, with the reason behind each side's score from its assessment. The numbers are in the table below; this is what they stand for.

Security & auth Junie CLI +23

Junie CLI 56

Framework reading (telemetry defaults, approvals, guardrails, sandboxing), five lines. A browser login, a long-lived Junie API key with no scopes we found, or provider keys passed as flags or environment variables. The CLI's statistics default isn't stated (13). The allowlist asks before terminal commands, MCP tools, edits outside the project, reads outside it and secret files, and checks every part of chained, nested and multi-line commands. Brave mode is interactive only. Sandbox mode limits writes and hides ~/.ssh, but it's EAP-only, off by default, missing on Windows, and leaves the network open by default (12). Interactive runs keep an untrusted project's MCP servers, hooks and skills unloaded and a project can't widen the sandbox, but one-shot, piped, ACP and Gateway runs trust every project by design, and the docs say to run them only in trusted projects (9). /usage shows per-session cost and sessions are stored, and PreToolUse hooks in batch runs can log or block tools, but they're EAP, and no audit log for the CLI was found (7). A coordinated disclosure policy (updated 10 October 2026) and a security.txt contact, CVEs JetBrains publishes as a CVE numbering authority (three for Junie in cvelistV5) and a fixed-issues page, discretionary rewards with no formal bounty, and SOC 2 per the Junie homepage. The repository has no SECURITY.md, per a clone on 4 November (15). The docs, policy and homepage readings are per the 18 October check, not re-read on 4 November, because JetBrains' website terms bar robots and data mining on its sites. 13+12+9+7+15 = 56.

Verdent 33

Framework reading (telemetry defaults, approvals, guardrails, sandboxing). Conversation history and tool results go to Verdent's US servers and on to Azure, Bedrock or Vertex, with zero data retention stated for Vertex and Bedrock only. Event logging to log.verdent.ai has no documented opt-out. BYOA keys stay on the machine (10). Plan Mode is read-only, Agent Mode asks before destructive commands and edits outside scope, and workers are isolated by git worktree, but there is no sandbox or network control and the approval list isn't enumerated (9). No prompt-injection guidance found, while web search and fetch results enter the context (2). Usage history in the dashboard, no audit log found (5). A security page with a disclosure address and a five-day acknowledgement, SOC 2 and ISO/IEC 42001 being pursued rather than held, no security.txt and no bug bounty (7). 10+9+2+5+7 = 33.

Payments & pricing Junie CLI +22

Junie CLI 42

Harness reading of the published rubric. No payment protocol (0). Plan prices and the US$1 credit are public without a login, but per-model credit rates and Junie API key usage rates weren't found (12). Junie Lite is free with a JetBrains account and no card (20). Judgement call. The docs present BYOK keys and custom endpoints such as Ollama as alternatives to a JetBrains sign-in, so a pipeline holding a provider key needs no JetBrains signup, but the headless page says a token is required and a Junie API key is created by hand at junie.jetbrains.com/cli (10). 0+12+20+10 = 42. Per the 18 October check, not re-read on 4 November, because JetBrains' website terms bar robots and data mining on its sites.

Verdent 20

Harness reading of the published rubric, scored on the Verdent subscription the agent needs. No payment protocol (0). Plan prices from $5 a month, top-up prices and the credit value of about $0.059 are public without a login (20). Free Mode and the free trial ended on 29 October 2026, so there is no free tier (0). A person signs up in a browser (0). 0+20+0+0 = 20.

Transparency & trust Junie CLI +22

Junie CLI 77

Proprietary, with clear terms. The JetBrains AI Terms of Service (version 2.1, effective 30 September 2025) name AI Assistant and Junie, though the Junie EAP terms from December 2024 still call Junie a plugin (15). The terms rule out training on inputs without consent and list AI subcontractors with 30 days' notice of new ones (page updated 29 September 2026, naming OpenAI, Google, Anthropic and SpaceXAI for Junie). The AI FAQ says nothing persists unless detailed data collection is on, retained up to a year, and that it's on by default for non-commercial licences. Security monitoring keeps data for an unstated limited period (22). The terms promise 30 days' email notice before JetBrains AI is discontinued, but Junie Lite's model may change without notice and model aliases change without a stated period (10). A per-run override for anonymous statistics is documented, with no stated default and no list of what is sent (10). 15+22+10+10 = 57. Per the 18 October check, not re-read on 4 November, because JetBrains' website terms bar robots and data mining on its sites.

Verdent 55

Proprietary, under terms from Verdent AI, Inc. that are clear on use and ownership (15). The privacy policy and security page agree that data stays in the US and that input isn't trained on without consent, and the security page lists subprocessors. The privacy policy gives no retention periods, names MiniMax as a provider the security list leaves out, and deletion is by email request (14). The credit bonus carries a promise of 15 days' notice, but Free Mode was retired on the day v2.18.0 shipped and no deprecation policy was found (6). Subprocessors and their locations are listed, and the domains the app calls are named, with event logging undescribed (12). 15+14+6+12 = 47.

Agent ergonomics Junie CLI +20

Junie CLI 55

Framework reading, adapted to a harness driven by a pipeline. MCP tools can be allowed per server prefix, and default MCP, skill, agent and config locations can each be switched off, with no deferred tool loading found (15). text, json and json-stream output and --json-output-file. Remote mode mentions a step limit, but no turn, time or spend cap for a headless run was documented (10). No exit codes. A Stop hook can end a task with a failure status, and StopFailure names the failure category (8). Sessions resume with --session-id or --resume, and worktrees isolate parallel sessions (14). One command with --auth and a dynamically chosen default model, a GitHub Action and GitLab CI, and no SDK (8). 15+10+8+14+8 = 55. Per the 18 October check, not re-read on 4 November, because JetBrains' website terms bar robots and data mining on its sites.

Verdent 35

Harness reading. MCP servers per project or globally, subagents, skills and rules, but no per-tool disabling or deferred loading found (10). No output-size, turn-limit or budget controls for a run were found beyond credit balances (5). No exit codes or error format, since there is no headless mode (3). Parallel workers in git worktrees and a review column make runs reviewable and reversible, with no resume by ID documented (10). No CLI, API or SDK. A pipeline can only reach Manager through a paired Telegram, Slack or Feishu bot (7). 10+5+3+10+7 = 35.

Reliability Verdent +10

Junie CLI 33

Local-package reading, the same as the other closed-source harnesses. Install scripts for macOS, Linux and Windows on x86-64 and ARM64, a Homebrew tap and npm, with SHA-256 sums checked against the release feed (update-info.jsonl, read from a clone on 4 November), but the script carries on without a sum for an unlisted version and npm sat five weeks behind at 3110.7.0 on 18 October (17). No public CI or test suite. No source is published and the repository has no workflow files, per a clone on 4 November (0). Crash and regression line 0. The 18 October counts came from shields.io badges and YouTrack's JSON API, both struck in this run, and no first-hand reading of the GitHub tracker or YouTrack is possible today (github.com pages refused, JetBrains hosts paused). What's New dates every build, but entries are one line and no breaking change is called out, and versions are a date plus a build number, per the 18 October check (6). JetBrains said Junie left Beta on 17 June 2026, but the headless page dated 15 October still calls the CLI an EAP, per the 18 October check (10). 17+0+0+6+10 = 33.

Verdent 43

Local-package reading, as for the other closed-source harnesses. The desktop app installs from verdent.ai with macOS 11 or later and 64-bit Windows 10 and 11 stated, and the extension from the editor marketplaces, but not from a package registry (15). No public CI or test suite, since the source isn't published (0). No public issue tracker, every task runs through Verdent's servers, and no status page was found, so there is no readable record (5). A dated changelog by version, with the end of Free Mode called out in v2.18.0, but no breaking-change sections (8). 2.18.0, generally available (15). 15+0+5+8+15 = 43.

Schema & documentation Junie CLI +7

Junie CLI 62

Framework reading. A CLI reference that lists every flag with examples, documented formats for the allowlist, config.json, custom model profiles and hook payloads, and ACP as the editor protocol. No schema for the json or json-stream output was found, and the OpenAPI covers only update metadata (12). llms.txt exists and claims Markdown by content negotiation, but docs pages came back as HTML with Accept: text/markdown and llms.txt doesn't index them (6). Pages say when to use ACP and when not, and how trust works in each launch mode, but the headless page doesn't say what happens when an action needs approval (13). Output formats, effort levels, channels and allowlist actions are enumerated, though the effort values differ between the CLI reference and the model page (11). Examples throughout and nine StopFailure categories in the hooks page, but no exit codes or error format (8). A dated release list and dated docs pages (12). 12+6+13+11+8+12 = 62. Per the 18 October check, not re-read on 4 November, because JetBrains' website terms bar robots and data mining on its sites.

Verdent 55

Framework reading for a harness. No schema for settings or output, only mcp.json examples in the standard mcpServers shape (5). Every current docs page has a Markdown twin at the same path with .md, though no llms.txt (10). The docs say when to use Agent Mode or Plan Mode and what Plan Mode can't do, but the Agent Mode page lists the actions that need approval only as "certain tool executions" and "destructive operations" (12). Modes and BYOA agent types are enumerated, permissions are not (5). Examples on the MCP, BYOA and messaging pages, and a recovery page, with no error codes (8). Version numbers and a dated public changelog (15). The archived 1.0 docs are still served beside the current ones. 5+10+12+5+8+15 = 55.

Verdicts

Junie CLI

Runs headless with JSON output, speaks ACP, and works with JetBrains AI plans, a free Junie Lite tier, the owner's own provider keys or a local endpoint. Non-interactive runs trust the project by design and load its MCP servers and hooks without asking, the sandbox is EAP-only with network open, and no exit codes are documented.

Verdent

A desktop and editor coding agent that splits a goal into parallel workers in git worktrees, with a read-only Plan Mode, MCP servers and the option to run workers on Claude Code or Codex. It has no CLI, API or sandbox, sends context through Verdent's servers, and has had no free tier since 29 October 2026.

Before you call either

Junie CLI

  1. Run headless only in repositories you trust. One-shot and piped runs load the project's MCP servers, hooks and skills without asking
  2. Set JUNIE_API_KEY (from junie.jetbrains.com/cli) or a provider key such as JUNIE_ANTHROPIC_API_KEY in CI. The default sign-in opens a browser
  3. Add --output-format json or --json-output-file to parse results. Check the output, since exit codes aren't documented
  4. Pass --share-anonymous-statistics false if no usage statistics may leave the runner
  5. Pin a build with --use-version and --skip-update-check. The CLI updates itself on start by default

Verdent

  1. Don't plan to drive Verdent headless. Hand the task to the person using the desktop app, or use a harness with a print mode
  2. Start large changes in Plan Mode and review plan.md before switching to Agent Mode
  3. Add MCP servers in the project's .mcp.json or ~/.verdent/mcp.json in the mcpServers shape
  4. Keep work under git, since rollback relies on git and there is no sandbox
  5. Budget in credits at about $0.059 each, because there is no free allowance since 29 October 2026
