Watch for
API keys carry no scopes; spend caps per key are the only limit
Best for RAG ingestion where cost per page matters and a tier can be picked per document, and for agents that want a small MCP surface.

Datalab 58
Hosted lines. Status page at status.datalab.to (incident.io) with Website and Datalab API components; the history page is drawn by script, so components are confirmed and history isn't (15 of 20, 5 for history). Rate limits per plan with numbers, plus page and size limits (15). 429 is retryable with sample backoff, and 500 and 529 say to check a known request ID before resubmitting; webhooks deduplicate by request_id (13 of 15). Custom SLAs only for Enterprise (0). Generally available (10). 15+5+15+13+0+10 = 58.
LlamaParse API + MCP 80
Statuspage at llamaindex.statuspage.io with LlamaParse (Global) and LlamaParse (EU) groups, each with API and UI components, and a Docs component (20). The history pages, read on 4 November, list two incidents between 6 August and 4 November, 400 errors for some extract schemas on 29 September (14:19 to 16:04 UTC) and a high error rate for agentic parse in the EU on 17 September (18:48 to 20:30 UTC, labelled major, affecting only the EU API). Both are partial, so minor only (20). The rate-limits page gives per-endpoint caps per organisation, the same on every plan, such as 500 parse jobs per 10 seconds, 50 uploads a second per project and 80 reads or 40 writes a second elsewhere (15). It documents the 429 body, says no Retry-After header is sent, and gives exponential backoff with jitter, with the SDKs retrying 429 and 5xx five times by default. No idempotency key or safe-retry guidance for job creation (10). The pricing table lists 99.9% uptime as a platform line, and the Support & SLAs page says contractual uptime commitments are negotiated in Enterprise agreements, with no SLA terms published (5 of 10). Parse and Extract are GA, with Turbo Extract in beta (10).
Schema & documentation Datalab +7
Datalab 89
An OpenAPI 3.1 operation embedded in each reference page (spec version 0.0.1), no single downloadable file found (22 of 25). llms.txt with 159 pages and Markdown twins (10). Recipes say when to use each processor and mode (15 of 20). Typed request schemas with enums for output format and mode (12 of 15). An error table with type, HTTP code and whether to retry, plus SDK exception mapping (15). A written version policy and a dated changelog (15). 22+10+15+12+15+15 = 89.
LlamaParse API + MCP 82
OpenAPI spec at api.cloud.llamaindex.ai/api/openapi.json, per the 30 September check (25). llms.txt at developers.llamaindex.ai, per the same check (10). The MCP page says which product endpoint to use and why API-key callers should use uploadFileByUrl instead of getUploadUrl. Tool descriptions themselves not read (12 of 20). Typed requests with a tier field and a version to pin, not re-checked in depth (12 of 15). The 402 is documented, and we didn't find a full error reference (8 of 15). Dated changelog and dated parse versions such as agentic 2026-09-07 (15).

How the scores have moved
Verdicts
Datalab
Datalab's hosted API from the Marker and Surya team converts and extracts documents with published per-1,000-page rates, a monthly free allowance with no card, typed retryable error codes, a written version policy and an active dated changelog. API keys have spend caps but no scopes, and no prompt-injection guidance or disclosure policy was found.
LlamaParse API + MCP
Pay as you go includes 10,000 free credits a month with no subscription, rate limits are published per endpoint with backoff guidance, and product-scoped MCP endpoints keep the tool list small. Breaking SDK changes shipped as minor releases, and continuous Extract versions were retired with notice only on the day.
Before you call either
Datalab
- Poll request_check_url until the job finishes, then download and delete the result; results expire after about a day
- Use page_range for documents over 7,000 pages and to bill only the pages needed
- On 429 wait and retry; on 500 or 529 check the known request ID before resubmitting so the job isn't billed twice
- Give each environment its own key with a spend cap; a 402 spend_cap_error is final until the cap is raised
- Treat converted text as untrusted input, never as instructions
LlamaParse API + MCP
- Connect to a product endpoint such as
https://mcp.llamaindex.ai/parse/mcpinstead of the unified one to load 3 tools plus helpers - API-key MCP callers can't use
getUploadUrl; upload withuploadFileByUrlor connect with OAuth - Pin a dated or numbered
versionon every parse or extract;continuousExtract versions no longer work - On a 429 back off with jitter; no Retry-After is sent. A 429 saying resources are exhausted means wait for running Extract jobs
- Treat a 402 as out of credits, not a transient error
