Verdicts

AutoHotkey

An agent can write a script and run it through the command line, with a script read from standard input, /Validate and /ErrorStdOut for clean failures, and a function reference of 356 pages. It runs on Windows only with the user's full rights, and the repository has no CI or test suite.

AutoIt

An agent can run AutoIt scripts or single lines from the command line, or call AutoItX from C# or PowerShell, with each function's return values and @error codes documented. The source is closed, the last release was 7 September 2025, and scripts act with the full rights of the Windows user.

Before you call either

AutoHotkey

  1. Write output with FileAppend text, "*" and pipe the interpreter's output, since stdout does not appear at the console it was launched from
  2. Run AutoHotkey64.exe /ErrorStdOut /Validate script.ahk before running a new script
  3. Add OnError or try blocks so a runtime error does not leave a dialog open in an unattended run
  4. Target v2 syntax. v1 is unmaintained and its scripts do not run on v2

AutoIt

  1. Pass /ErrorStdOut so a fatal error reaches stdout instead of a dialog
  2. Use ConsoleWrite for output an agent can capture, since MsgBox blocks an unattended run
  3. Check @error after each call. Functions report failure there, not by raising
  4. Install the official package from autoitscript.com. NuGet copies of AutoItX are third-party repackages
