From our research 9 facts checked against the vendor's pages
- Surface graded
- The model as Tinker serves it, through serverless inference (beta) and the OpenAI-compatible API (beta), read from the launch post, the model card, Tinker's models and pricing page and its OpenAI-compatible API page on 6 November 2026. Platform-level readings (status, keys, audit log, terms, DPA, deprecations) are the tinker listing's of 1 October to 4 November. No account was made and nothing was called
- Model
- A 48-layer decoder-only transformer with a sparse mixture of experts, 8 of 384 experts per token, hybrid local and global attention, 594B total and 17B active parameters. A 292M-parameter vision encoder based on Perception Encoder. MXFP8 and NVFP4 numerics. Text and images in, text out. No audio, which Inkling and Inkling-Small take
- Where it runs
- Tinker's serverless inference (beta) at 256K context and its training and sampling at 64K or 256K, the Tinker Playground for chat, and the OpenAI-compatible endpoint, whose /chat/completions and /completions are both supported. Thinking Machines says other platforms will follow in the coming weeks
- Weights
- Not public on 6 November 2026. The launch post says the full weights will be released under Apache 2.0 'next week after the completion of external safety testing and red-teaming', and that Tinker checkpoints become downloadable then. The model card's licence line is the Tinker Terms of Use with the Model Acceptable Use Policy
- Context
- Up to 1M tokens per the model card, and evaluations used a 1M-token trajectory limit. Tinker serves 256K for serverless inference and 64K or 256K for training
- Pricing
- Serverless inference $0.30 input, $0.03 cached input and $1.00 output per million tokens. Training side prefill $0.30, cached $0.03, sample $1.00, train $1.50 (64K) or $3.00 (256K). Inkling-Small's serverless prices are $0.30, $0.06 and $1.20, Inkling's $1.00, $0.17 and $4.05
- Thinking Machines' figures

AA Intelligence Index v5.0 30.6, Vals Index v2.2 56.1%, DeepSWE v1.1 72.1%, SWE-Bench Pro v2 Hard 86.3%, Vibe Code Bench v1.1 81.6%, FrontierCode v2.0 25.4%, Terminal Bench v4.0 13.1%, BrowseComp 90.2%, MMMU Pro 81.6%, HLE-Diamond 28.7%, Vals Finance Index 61.5%. Several rows are copied from Artificial Analysis, Vals, Scale AI and others by the publisher
- Safety
- Pre-release testing for sycophancy, manipulation, psychological harm and over-refusal, with multi-turn outside red-teaming, CBRN and cyber testing including refusal-suppressed variants, and a loss-of-control assessment that puts it 'materially below frontier capabilities'. The launch post says it trails closed models such as GPT-6.1 Sol on alignment evaluations
- Data use
- Tinker's Service Terms of Use (10 January 2026) commit not to use Customer Content for model training or fine-tuning, with a DPA and deletion on request, as read for the tinker listing

Strengths
- OpenAI-compatible chat and completions endpoint, so the OpenAI SDKs work with a Tinker key
- $0.30 input, $0.03 cached and $1.00 output per million tokens, published without a login
- Text and image input, a 256K context on Tinker and up to 1M per the model card
- reasoning_effort from none to xhigh or a number, with reasoning returned separately
- A model card with intended use, limitations, training data sources and safety testing that includes outside red-teaming
- Thinking Machines says Apache 2.0 weights follow a week after launch
Weaknesses
- Serverless inference and the OpenAI-compatible API are both labelled beta, with a waitlist for higher throughput
- No status page, SLA or published rate limits for serverless inference
- Tool-calling format and structured output aren't documented for this model
- No free tier, and sign-up is a browser flow with payment details
- Benchmark results are Thinking Machines' own, with no independent results yet
Before you call it notes for agents
- Call https://tinker.thinkingmachines.dev/services/tinker-prod/oai/api/v1 with an OpenAI client and TINKER_API_KEY, using /chat/completions
- The serverless model ID is thinkingmachines/Inkling-2-Small:peft:262144:sampling-nvfp4, per Tinker's pricing page. The OpenAI page's examples use your own checkpoint paths, so confirm it before relying on it
- Pass reasoning_effort as none to xhigh or 0.0 to 0.99 (default 0.9); reasoning arrives in reasoning_content unless separate_reasoning is false
- Keep images between 40 and 4096 px a side, per the model card
- Validate JSON yourself, since structured output and the tool-call format aren't documented
- Plan for a move to open weights. When they publish, the open-weights listing will carry sizes and runtimes

A reading by a fixed set of rules, each answered with the vendor's own sentence. It isn't legal advice, a rule can miss a clause or misread one, and the document itself is what binds. How it's read and scored.
Not looked up: RDAP isn't requested under the 1 November 2026 rules.
The launch post and model card are on thinkingmachines.ai and name Thinking Machines Lab, Inc. as provider. The OpenAI-compatible endpoint is on thinkingmachines.dev, which Tinker's own docs give as the production base URL, so it's read as a domain the vendor controls; its registration wasn't looked up.
Thinking Machines' terms bar scraping the Services, which the 4 November re-check read as a ban and paused. The founder decided on 6 November 2026 that reading at a person's pace is fine, so four pages were read one at a time: the launch post, the model card, the models and pricing page and the OpenAI-compatible API page. tinker-docs.thinkingmachines.ai has no robots.txt; thinkingmachines.ai's has no rules.
security.txt lists security-reports@thinkingmachines.ai and expires 2029-07-13, per the 2 November reading.

Notable
- Released on 5 November 2026 on Tinker only, with closed weights. Thinking Machines says the Apache 2.0 weights follow 'next week' after external safety testing and red-teaming, and other platforms 'in the coming weeks' source
- Thinking Machines' table gives Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index v5.0 30.6, which its intro rounds to 31, plus DeepSWE v1.1 72.1%, SWE-Bench Pro v2 Hard 86.3%, BrowseComp 90.2% and Terminal Bench v4.0 13.1%. Vendor-reported, not our measurement source
- Trained natively in NVFP4 on 8.4T then 3.8T tokens and later phases, with training stages at 512K, 1M and 256K context source
- The model card says it remains 'materially below frontier capabilities' in agentic capability, deception and sabotage potential, and the launch post says it trails closed models such as GPT-6.1 Sol on alignment evaluations source
- Cheaper on Tinker's serverless inference than its predecessor, Inkling-Small, on cached input and output ($0.03 and $1.00 against $0.06 and $1.20), with input the same $0.30 source

Graded 52.1 D methodology v0.7
Fix list 17 items, the biggest gain first
Everything this grade says the listing lacks, from the reasons above, the checklist, the provenance checks, the deductions, what we couldn't check and what the review panel asked for, with the steps, ready to paste into a coding agent working on Inkling 2 Small. A fix counts at the next check, once it's public.
You're lucky. As part of the beta, your first month is free.
What we couldn't check
- Kind. Graded as a hosted model because the weights aren't public on 6 November. The founder chose to switch it to open weights when they publish ('Hosted now, weights later'): re-grade by the open-weight checklist then, with files, sizes and runtimes, and link it to inkling-small
- unchecked: whether the serverless model ID thinkingmachines/Inkling-2-Small:peft:262144:sampling-nvfp4 is accepted on the OpenAI-compatible endpoint. The pricing page lists it and the OpenAI page's examples use checkpoint paths
- unchecked: tool-call format and structured output for this model. Inkling and Inkling-Small use the inkling renderer and parsers; Inkling 2 Small's renderer wasn't read
- Platform readings (status, rate limits, retries, keys, audit log, terms, DPA, deprecations, SDK CI) are the tinker listing's of 1 October to 4 November, not re-read
- Thinking Machines' terms pause lifted by the founder on 6 November 2026 ('Person's pace is fine'). The tinker and gladly re-checks can now read their paused hosts at a person's pace
- No independent results yet; artificialanalysis.ai wasn't requested, per the rules. The 'big leap' over Inkling-Small reported in coverage isn't checked: the 30.6 is on index v5.0, and Inkling-Small's earlier 40 may be on an older version
