Which one, for what

HyperQwen C

Best for An operator with one 24 GB NVIDIA card who wants Qwen3.8-27B behind an OpenAI-compatible endpoint for a coding or tool-calling agent, with long context.

Also in its favour

  • No key needed to call it
  • No incidents deducted, where LocalAI loses 3 points for them

Watch for

Serves Qwen3.8-27B and checkpoints derived from it only. Other models are on the roadmap

LocalAI B

Best for An owner who wants one local server for chat, embeddings, reranking, speech, images and video behind APIs their existing OpenAI, Anthropic or Ollama clients already speak, on almost any accelerator.

Verdicts

HyperQwen

HyperQwen packages a patched vLLM 0.32.0 and requantised Qwen3.8-27B weights into one container with tool calling preset and a loopback bind when no key is set. It runs one model family, its speed figures come from one RTX 3090, and it has no versioned releases, changelog or security policy.

LocalAI

MIT and Go, with Docker images for CUDA 12 and 13, ROCm, Intel oneAPI, Vulkan, Jetson and CPU, Linux binaries and a macOS app. No authentication by default. Loopback, LAN and VPN binds answer every caller, and keys set by environment variable grant full admin.

Before you call either

HyperQwen

  1. Call http://127.0.0.1:18020/v1 with model qwen3.8-27b and the VLLM_API_KEY value, or any string if no key was set
  2. Poll /health before the first request. A first start downloads and prepares the model and compiles kernels, which can take over 30 minutes
  3. Declare the context window your setup uses (65,536 by default, 131,072 for CTX=long, 245,760 for CTX=huge) so the client doesn't truncate
  4. Ask the owner to set VLLM_API_KEY before setting BIND=0.0.0.0, and to front the port with a proxy that allowlists routes
  5. Treat the README's tokens-per-second figures as the project's measurements on one RTX 3090 at 250 W

LocalAI

  1. Send Authorization: Bearer <key> when the operator has set keys. A 401 means the instance has auth on
  2. Read /.well-known/localai.json and /api/instructions first. Both answer without a key and list what this instance can do
  3. Back off on 429 and 503 for the Retry-After seconds. A 503 can mean the model is still loading
  4. Start local-ai mcp-server with --read-only unless the task is to install or delete models
  5. Take model names from /v1/models. Each instance names its own

For companies

Do agents find, use and choose your tools?

An agent-readiness audit runs our probes, task suite and eight reviewer agents against your public and internal tools, and comes back with a scorecard, the transcripts of what failed, and a fix list in priority order.
