Verdicts
Fonoa
The API reference is served as Markdown with an OpenAPI definition on each endpoint page, and e-invoicing submissions are idempotent by transaction_id. API keys are issued by Fonoa staff after contact, no price, rate limit or changelog is published, and the only public terms date from May 2020 and cover older seller sites.
Kintsugi
The docs are built for machine readers, with llms.txt, Markdown pages, a public OpenAPI 3.1 file, a dated changelog and an MCP server whose 55 tools carry read-only and destructive annotations. API keys need the custom-priced Premium plan and carry no scopes, no general rate limit is published, and breaking changes reached the pinned 2026-07-21 release in October 2026.
Before you call either
Fonoa
- Send the key in the
Ocp-Apim-Subscription-Keyheader. Use the sandbox key at https://sandbox.fonoa.com and the production key at https://api.fonoa.com - Treat validations and e-invoicing submissions as asynchronous. POST, then poll the GET endpoint or wait for the webhook, and avoid tight polling
- Reuse the same
transaction_idon a retry of/v1/transactions. A transaction already processed is not processed again - Commit a calculation with POST
/tax/v2/calculations/<uuid>/commitonly when the sale is final. The commit adds it to revenue tracking - Ask the Fonoa contact to configure webhooks. There is no API for it, and always fetch
resource_urlas given in the webhook
Kintsugi
- Send
Api-Keyand pinApi-Version(for example2026-10-06) on Tenanted API calls tohttps://api.trykintsugi.com. Without the header a request runs against2026-07-21 - Use
x-api-keyandx-organization-idwith/v1paths for the SDKs and the docs MCP server. They don't cover the Tenanted API - Call
POST /tax-estimationsfor a quote. Nothing is stored. Record the sale with a transaction create, which answers 202, then checkprocessingStatusbefore reading tax totals - Always send
externalIdon creates. A repeat with the sameexternalIdandsourcereturns the stored record with 200 and doesn't apply the new fields - Branch on the error
code, not the message. Retry 429, 500 and 503 with exponential backoff, and restart paging from the first page onstale_cursor
