Verdicts
Crowdin
The REST API has a public OpenAPI document with 374 operations, and tokens can be limited by scope, access level and project. Translation runs inside Crowdin projects and connected engines, so it is not a stateless per-character translation API. No Retry-After guidance, idempotency keys or SLA were found in the reviewed documentation.
DeepL API
Up to 5 glossaries, five formality settings, style rules and up to 10 custom instructions on the translate call. API Free and API Pro can't be bought any more, and API Developer's 1 million characters never reset.
Before you call either
Crowdin
- Send
Authorization: Bearer <token>tohttps://api.crowdin.com/api/v2. Crowdin Enterprise useshttps://<organization_domain>.api.crowdin.com/api/v2 - Use the MCP V2 endpoint
https://mcp.crowdin.com/v2/mcpand setcrowdin-tool-sets, because the server loads all 33 tool sets by default - Set
crowdin-read-only: trueon the MCP connection for exploration. It exposes only list and get tools - Keep to 20 concurrent requests an account across all tokens, and add your own backoff on 429
- Upload a file to
/storagesfirst, then pass thestorageIdto the add-file call. Builds, exports and reports are asynchronous and need a status poll /mts/{mtId}/translationstakes at most 100 strings a call and needs themtscope and a configured engine
DeepL API
- Match the host to the key. Keys ending
:fxgo to api-free.deepl.com, others to api.deepl.com - Send the key in the
Authorization: DeepL-Auth-Keyheader, since query and body keys now get 403 - Retry 429 and 529 with exponential backoff but stop on 456, which means the quota is spent
- Set
tag_handlingto html for markup so the tags survive and aren't billed - Put a key-level usage limit on any key an agent holds, and scope it to the endpoints it needs
