How to choose

  1. Consent and opt-out handlingCheck how consent and opt-out status are read and enforced on each profile, since an agent that triggers a message to an opted-out contact creates a compliance problem.
  2. Holding sends for approvalCheck whether a message triggered by an agent can be held for human approval, and which permissions decide that, before it reaches a real audience.
  3. Limits for profile and event writesCheck the rate limits and batch sizes for profile updates and event tracking, since loading existing contacts needs a different pace from live events.
  4. Segment building and read-backCheck whether an agent can build a segment through the API and read its members back, so the audience is confirmed before a send.

How the benchmark tests this category. The same hundred test profiles and events loaded into each listing. The same tasks run through its API (update a profile, track an event, build a segment, trigger a message, read campaign results). We check rate limits, consent handling and how a send is held for approval. In this run listings are graded from public evidence against the published checklist.

Each one in detail

#1

Customer.io

BB 74.5/100

Customer.io is a customer engagement platform that stores profiles and events, builds segments and sends automated email, SMS, push, in-app and WhatsApp messages. Agents reach it through REST APIs, a hosted MCP server and a command-line tool.

Verdict The hosted MCP server uses OAuth with five scopes, starts read-only, and keeps live sends and sensitive attributes behind admin settings that are off by default. The App API allows 10 requests a second and no idempotency keys were found for sends. No SLA is published, and the status page lists 11 incidents in 90 days.

Choose it for Product and lifecycle teams already on Customer.io who want an agent to build segments, draft automations and report on campaigns with sends held behind a separate scope.

Strengths

  • MCP connections default to the read scope, and write:live and read:sensitive need an admin setting that is off by default
  • Eight MCP tools cover the Journeys and Pipelines APIs, with reads, writes and deletes split so a client can approve each separately
  • Public OpenAPI 3.1 spec with 213 operations, llms.txt, and Markdown for every docs page by adding .md

Weaknesses

  • No idempotency key found on App API writes, transactional sends included
  • App API limit is 10 requests a second, and API-triggered broadcasts one request every 10 seconds
  • status.customerio.com lists 11 incidents between 10 July and 8 October 2026, two marked major

#2

Klaviyo API + MCP

BB 71.7/100

Klaviyo is a marketing platform that holds customer profiles and events and sends email, SMS, WhatsApp and push campaigns and flows. Agents reach it through a JSON:API REST API and an official hosted MCP server.

Verdict The REST API has a public OpenAPI 3 description of 345 operations, scoped keys and OAuth, and dated revisions supported for two years. The hosted MCP server lists 274 tools with a read-only switch. No approval step before a campaign send was found in the reviewed documentation, and no SLA is published.

Choose it for Consumer brands already on Klaviyo that want an agent to read campaign and flow results, manage profiles, events and segments, and draft campaigns.

Strengths

  • Public OpenAPI 3.0.2 description of 345 operations, each with its rate limit and required scopes, in an MIT repository updated on 7 October 2026
  • Private keys can be read-only, full or custom per API, and OAuth tokens carry resource:access scopes with PKCE
  • Each dated revision is stable for one year and deprecated for one more before retirement, with a changelog that marks breaking changes

Weaknesses

  • No approval or confirmation step before send_campaign or a campaign send job was found in the reviewed documentation
  • No SLA found. The terms of service say the services may be unavailable during scheduled or unscheduled downtime
  • Flow sending stalled for about eight hours on 26 August 2026, and three further flow delays were posted in September

#3

MoEngage

B 65.2/100

MoEngage is a hosted customer engagement platform that stores user profiles and events, builds segments and sends campaigns and flows by push, email, SMS and WhatsApp. Agents reach it through REST APIs and a hosted MCP server.

Verdict MoEngage publishes 36 OpenAPI files covering 140 operations, a per-endpoint rate limit table, Markdown docs and a hosted MCP server that builds drafts and leaves publishing to a person. No price, trial or self-serve signup is published, and on 17 August 2026 the Inform API in one data centre accepted requests for about 16 hours without sending the messages.

Choose it for A team already on MoEngage that wants an agent to update profiles, track events, build filter segments, draft Push and Email campaigns and read campaign, flow and analytics results.

Strengths

  • 36 public OpenAPI files with 140 operations, every one with a summary and description, and a 429 response documented on 103
  • A rate limit table with numbers for every endpoint group, plus x-ratelimit-limit, x-ratelimit-remaining and x-ratelimit-reset response headers
  • The hosted MCP server at mcp.moengage.com uses OAuth tied to the user's role, masks PII attributes and cannot publish a campaign

Weaknesses

  • No public price, free tier or trial. The pricing page lists Growth and Enterprise plans with a one-year minimum and a sales contact only
  • On 17 August 2026 the Inform API in DC-03 returned HTTP 200 for about 16 hours while some messages were never sent, per the status page
  • Scoped keys, OAuth 2.0 and AWS STS keys sit in an API key dashboard that is in early access and enabled on request

#4

Omnisend

B 64.9/100

Omnisend is an email, SMS and push marketing platform for online shops. Agents reach contacts, events, segments, campaigns, automations and forms through a REST API with dated versions and an official hosted MCP server.

Verdict The API documents 104 operations with per-operation OpenAPI definitions, cursor pagination, RFC 9457 errors and published rate limits, and the hosted MCP server fronts them with four tools and a read-only consent preset. No approval hold before a campaign send, no idempotency keys, no SLA and no official SDK were found in the reviewed documentation.

Choose it for Online shops already on Omnisend that want an agent to read campaign results, manage contacts and segments, and draft campaigns or automations.

Strengths

  • Each of the 104 documented operations has a Markdown page with its OpenAPI 3.0 definition, required scopes and rate limit, indexed in llms.txt
  • The hosted MCP server lists four tools (search, tool_schema, tool_documentation, execute) in front of the whole API, with a read-only preset on the OAuth consent screen
  • Errors follow RFC 9457 with a field-level errors array that reports every validation failure at once, plus a trace ID in instance

Weaknesses

  • No approval or hold step before POST /campaigns/{id}/send was found. The terms make the customer responsible for approving each action an AI agent takes
  • No idempotency keys were found. Event eventID deduplicates historical events only, not real-time events that trigger automations
  • OAuth client credentials for the REST API are issued through a request form in one to three business days, and access tokens never expire unless the user revokes them

#5

Braze

C 61.2/100

Braze is a hosted engagement platform that stores customer profiles and events, builds segments and sends campaigns and Canvas journeys by email, SMS, push and in-app message. Agents reach it through a REST API and an official remote MCP server.

Verdict The REST API covers profiles, events, sends and exports with keys limited to named endpoints, and the remote MCP server adds 71 tools under OAuth with PKCE that return no user-level personal data. No OpenAPI document, idempotency keys, published price or SLA were found, and MCP writes run without a confirmation step.

Choose it for A company already on Braze that wants an agent to read campaign and Canvas results, manage catalogues and templates through MCP, or write profiles and trigger sends through REST.

Strengths

  • REST API keys carry per-endpoint permissions and optional IP allowlists, and a key's scope can't be edited after creation
  • Remote MCP server with OAuth, PKCE S256, dynamic client registration and three scopes, generally available since 17 September 2026
  • MCP tools return no user-level personal data, and the Use MCP Server permission is off by default for each workspace

Weaknesses

  • No public prices. Editions, monthly active users and Action Credits are sold by contract, and the pricing page says there is no free plan
  • No OpenAPI document found. The machine-readable contract is a public Postman collection
  • No idempotency keys on sends or /users/track, and Braze says it can't replay REST calls that fail during an incident

#6

Mailchimp Marketing API

C 57.4/100

Intuit Mailchimp's Marketing API manages audiences, contacts, tags, segments, events, campaigns, automations and reports for a Mailchimp account. It is a REST API at https://api.mailchimp.com/3.0/ that takes an API key or an OAuth 2 token.

Verdict A public OpenAPI 3.1 file covers all 297 operations, every docs page has a Markdown copy, and responses can be trimmed with fields. An API key carries full account access with no read-only option. The quick start's TypeScript package was not on npm on 8 October 2026, and the changelog's newest entry is 19 August 2025.

Choose it for Small businesses already on Mailchimp that want an agent to sync contacts, tag and segment them, record events, draft and schedule campaigns and read reports.

Strengths

  • OpenAPI 3.1 file for all 297 operations at https://api.mailchimp.com/schema/openapi/OpenAPI.json, with an error response on every operation
  • fields and exclude_fields trim responses on 130 operations, and count pages up to 1,000 records
  • Every docs page has a Markdown copy at the URL plus .md, with llms.txt indexes and four published agent skills

Weaknesses

  • An API key has full account access. The docs say there is no read-only key and no way to limit a key to chosen endpoints
  • OAuth 2 tokens carry no scopes and never expire, and no approval step before actions/send was found
  • The quick start's npm install @mailchimp/mailchimp-marketing answered 404 on npm, and pip install mailchimp-marketing installs a 2022 library with a different client class

#7

Iterable

C 55.2/100

Iterable is a hosted customer engagement platform that stores user profiles and events and sends campaigns and journeys by email, SMS, push, in-app and WhatsApp. Agents reach it through a REST API and an official local MCP server, in beta.

Verdict The REST API publishes a Swagger 2.0 contract with 159 operations, typed API keys including a read-only type, and per-endpoint rate limits. The MCP server starts read-only, with PII, writes and sends each switched on separately. No price, trial or self-serve signup is published, and the support centre, which holds the API guides, refused automated readers.

Choose it for A team already on Iterable that wants an agent to read campaigns, templates and metrics, or to update profiles, track events and trigger sends under review.

Strengths

  • Public Swagger 2.0 specification at api.iterable.com/api-docs with 159 operations and 210 schemas, the same for the EU data centre
  • Each operation lists the key types it accepts (Server-side, Read-only, Mobile, Web, JavaScript), and 30 operations accept a read-only key
  • The MCP server exposes 31 read tools by default. PII, writes and sends are three separate flags stored per key

Weaknesses

  • No public price, trial or self-serve signup. iterable.com/pricing redirects to the home page, which asks for a demo
  • No idempotency keys in the specification, and only 6 of 159 operations document a 429 response
  • The MCP server is in beta under terms that allow change or withdrawal without notice, and carries no tool annotations

#8

ActiveCampaign

D 50.5/100

ActiveCampaign is a hosted marketing automation platform for email, SMS and WhatsApp with a built-in CRM. Its v3 REST API and an official remote MCP server cover contacts, lists, tags, segments, campaigns, automations and deals.

Verdict The v3 REST API covers contacts, segments, campaign scheduling and bulk import, with OpenAPI 3.1 definitions inside public Markdown reference pages and documented Retry-After on 429s. Each user has one unscoped API key, the limit is 5 requests a second, and no changelog was found. The status page shows three critical incidents between 27 July and 28 September 2026.

Choose it for Small and mid-sized teams already on ActiveCampaign that want an agent to maintain contacts, segments and campaign drafts and enrol contacts in automations.

  • 429 responses carry Retry-After, RateLimit-Limit and RateLimit-Remaining headers per the rate limit page
  • Contact upsert by email and bulk import of 250 contacts a request make contact writes safe to repeat

Weaknesses

  • Three critical incidents on status.activecampaign.com between 27 July and 28 September 2026, one of about 24 hours 41 minutes on EU segmented campaigns
  • One API key per user with no scopes or read-only keys in the reviewed documentation
  • The limit is 5 requests a second per account on every plan

#9

CleverTap

D 48.8/100

CleverTap is a hosted customer engagement platform that stores user profiles and events and sends campaigns by push, email, SMS, WhatsApp and in-app messages. Agents reach it through a REST API authenticated with an account ID and passcode.

Verdict CleverTap's REST API uploads and reads profiles and events, creates and stops campaigns and reports results, with Markdown docs, numeric concurrency limits and a 30-day Core trial. No OpenAPI file or public status page was found, passcodes carry no scopes, and the docs say campaigns created through the API are not restricted by role-based access control.

Choose it for A team already on CleverTap that wants an agent to load profiles and events, read them back, create or stop API campaigns and pull campaign reports.

Strengths

  • Both docs hosts publish llms.txt and a Markdown twin of every page, with request examples in up to six languages
  • A concurrency limit is published for 23 API groups, 15 parallel requests on uploads and 3 on the others
  • Up to 100 named account passcodes with optional expiry, plus per-user passcodes an admin can reset or revoke

Weaknesses

  • No OpenAPI file was found. The contract is prose tables plus a Postman collection published as a zip on GitHub
  • No public status page or SLA was found on the site, the docs or the terms, which leave service levels to each order
  • Passcodes carry no scopes or read-only mode, and the docs say campaigns created through the API are not restricted by role-based access control
