## Overview

**Grade C · 58/100 · rank #768 of 1486 · #8 in Voice cloning & custom voices · not agent-ready · confidence medium**

More from Smallest, Inc., listed separately because each is its own product: [Smallest.ai Pulse STT](https://www.anchorterminal.com/tools/smallest-pulse-stt.md) (Speech-to-text), [Smallest.ai Lightning TTS](https://www.anchorterminal.com/tools/smallest-lightning-tts.md) (Text-to-speech).

## Assessment

One multipart POST clones a voice from 5 to 15 seconds of audio and returns sample clips, with dated deprecation notices and current changelog entries. The endpoint still defaults to a model whose clones stop working on 30 November 2026, there's no consent field or clone price, and the status feed shows frequent short API outages.

## Facts

| Field | Value |
| --- | --- |

| Surface listed | The instant cloning endpoint `POST /waves/v1/voice-cloning` on api.smallest.ai, read from docs.smallest.ai (guide, API reference, limits, errors, deprecations, changelog), the pricing, terms, privacy and prohibited-use pages, status.smallest.ai and PyPI on 6 November 2026. No account was created and no call was made |
| Sample length | 5 to 15 seconds, under 5 MB, as MP3, WAV, MP4 or WebM, one file per clone |
| Endpoints | `POST /waves/v1/voice-cloning` (multipart, synchronous, returns sample clips), `GET /waves/v1/voice-cloning` (lists every clone with `modelIds`), `DELETE /waves/v1/lightning-large` (deletes a clone). The older `POST /waves/v1/lightning-large/add_voice` is deprecated |
| Models | Clones are made for one pool, `lightning-v3.1` (default, retiring on 30 November 2026) or `lightning-v3.1-pro`, and must be used with the matching TTS model. `lightning-v2` is rejected |
| Consent and verification | No consent or verification field in the API. The Terms let Smallest ask for documentation that the speaker authorised the clone and remove voices without it. The prohibited use policy bars unauthorised impersonation |
| Voice ownership | The Terms say the customer owns its Input and Smallest assigns its rights in the Output, but the customer may not sell or share Output with third parties for commercial benefit |
| Limits | One concurrent TTS request per account on the self-serve plan, 100 TTS requests a minute and 450 million characters a month per the pricing table. A per-organisation clone limit returns `clone limit exceeded, consider upgrading`, with no number published |

### Why each score

- Reliability 65 (checked 2026-11-06): Graded on the hosted cloning API with the hosted lines. status.smallest.ai is the vendor's own status page with components per region and a dated incident feed (20). The feed, read on 6 November, has dozens of automated outage alerts on the API components in the 90 days from 8 August, most a few minutes long, and a cluster across every API region from 13 to 17 September. The 60-day uptime bars read 99.790 per cent for API USA and 99.849 per cent for API Global. No single outage of an hour was found, but repeated wide outages read as one major episode (10). Rate limits are published for TTS (one concurrent request, 100 a minute on pay as you go), while the per-organisation clone limit has no number (10 of 15). The limits page says to handle 429 gracefully and the clone errors say to retry a timeout, with no Retry-After, backoff figures or idempotency key (5 of 15). The pricing table lists an Enterprise SLA of 99.99 per cent (10). Instant cloning carries no beta label (10). 20+10+10+5+10+10 = 65.
- Performance: Pending. Latency is measured per call by our probes, which haven't run yet, so this run doesn't score it. Its weight is shared across the assessed categories until the first probe window closes.
- Schema & documentation 70 (checked 2026-11-06): The API reference pages are generated with typed fields, enums and error schemas, but no OpenAPI file was found linked from the docs or llms.txt (5 of 25). llms.txt and a Markdown copy of every page (10). The guide says when to use the Pro pool, how to check `modelIds` before synthesis and why a mismatched clone returns empty audio, while the reference still names the retiring default (14 of 20). `model` and `language` are enums validated by the server, with required `displayName` and `file`, a 5 MB limit and MIME types listed, and `tags` as a comma-separated string (12 of 15). Examples in curl, Python and Node.js and a table of seven error cases with causes (14 of 15). Paths under `/v1`, a deprecation page with dated statuses and a models changelog with entries on 21, 24, 26, 28 and 29 October 2026 (15). 5+10+14+12+14+15 = 70.
- Agent ergonomics 62 (checked 2026-11-06): The clone response is a compact object with the voice ID, status and signed URLs to sample clips rather than inline audio (20 of 25). The list call returns every clone on the organisation with no pagination or filter found (10 of 20). Errors carry a message and, on 500, an `error_code` enum with a stated fix, such as retrying `voice_clone_timeout` (16 of 20). No idempotency key, and retrying a timeout can leave a duplicate clone, with deletion through an oddly named route (4 of 20). Two required fields. The Python SDK `smallestai` 5.14.0 is current, while the npm package `smallestai` was last published on 16 April 2025 (12 of 15). 20+10+16+4+12 = 62.
- Security & auth 48 (checked 2026-11-06): Graded for voice cloning as the other listings in this category, with consent and misuse controls in place of the read-only line and training and retention of voice data in place of the prompt-injection line. Plain bearer keys, shown once, revocable, with rotation guidance and no scopes. Short-lived access tokens are refused on the cloning endpoint (20 of 30). No consent or verification field. The Terms let Smallest demand proof that the speaker authorised a clone and remove voices without it, and the prohibited use policy bars unauthorised impersonation. No watermark found (6 of 20). The Terms say Smallest won't use User Content or Input to train its services. Zero retention and retention windows are Enterprise options, and no retention period for samples is published (9 of 15). A usage dashboard, with no audit log found (5 of 15). A valid security.txt naming security@smallest.ai and a HIPAA business associate agreement page. The trust centre didn't answer through our proxy, so no certification was confirmed first-hand, and no bug bounty was found (8 of 20). 20+6+9+5+8 = 48.
- Payments & pricing 20 (checked 2026-11-06): No x402, MPP or L402 (0). Per-character TTS prices are public, about $0.175 per 10,000 characters on Lightning v3.1, but no price per clone is published and the models pricing table marks voice cloning No on pay as you go, against the docs (10). The agents pricing page states $10 in free credits, and whether a card is needed wasn't established (10 of 20). A person signs up in a browser and creates the key in the dashboard (0). 0+10+10+0 = 20.
- Task success: Pending. Task success needs the category task suites run through each tool, which haven't run yet, so this run doesn't score it. Its weight is shared across the assessed categories until then. A data provider's data-quality score is published on its listing now and becomes half of this category when it's scored.
- Maintenance & community 72 (checked 2026-11-06): Read as a model, on the lines the other hosted cloning listings use (recency 30, dated releases 10, deprecation notice 10, support 15, SDKs 15, health 10). The models changelog has entries dated 29 October 2026 (30). Entries on 21, 24, 26, 28 and 29 October and in September (10). The deprecation page dates each retirement, such as `lightning-v3.1` and its clones on 30 November 2026 with steps to migrate, though when the clone retirement was first announced wasn't found (7 of 10). Public changelog, support@smallest.ai and a Discord server, with no evidence read of how they answer (10 of 15). `smallestai` on PyPI released 5.12.3 to 5.14.0 between 1 and 7 October 2026, from a repository under fern-demo. The npm package is stale (10 of 15). Package repositories weren't cloned (5 of 10). 30+10+7+10+10+5 = 72.
- Transparency & trust 72 (checked 2026-11-06): Closed service with clear terms naming Smallest, Inc. under California law, effective 21 October 2026 (15 of 30). The Terms rule out training on customer content, the Privacy Policy (18 September 2026) gives retention criteria but no periods, and the Zero Data Retention page is specific about Enterprise options, with nothing on how long cloning samples are kept (16 of 30). A deprecation page with dated statuses (deprecated, rejects, removed, scheduled, retiring) and migration targets (16 of 20). Two regions named with locations. No sub-processor list was found and a DPA page exists unread (10 of 20). 15+16+16+10 = 57.

Fix list, everything this grade says the listing lacks, the biggest gain first (18 items). What it covers is at https://www.anchorterminal.com/fixes/smallest-voice-clone.md (JSON https://www.anchorterminal.com/fixes/smallest-voice-clone.json). The whole list for a coding agent comes from `POST https://www.anchorterminal.com/api/v1/fix-list` with `{"listing": "smallest-voice-clone", "plan": "read"}`, free while the beta runs

### What we couldn't check

- unchecked: the FAQ answers on the models pricing page (cloning cost, rate limits, audio retention), which the page draws only in a browser
- unchecked: whether the $10 free credit needs a card, and the per-organisation clone limit behind `clone limit exceeded`
- unchecked: the trust centre (trust.smallest.ai answered 502 through our proxy), so SOC 2 or ISO status wasn't confirmed first-hand
- When the 30 November 2026 retirement of `lightning-v3.1` clones was first announced. The models changelog read on 6 November has no entry for it
- The pricing table's "Voice Cloning: No" on pay as you go contradicts the docs, which let any API key clone. Recorded, not deducted
- The Python SDK's PyPI metadata points to github.com/fern-demo/smallest-ai-python-sdk, not a smallest-inc repository
- One request went to pypi.org/pypi/smallestai/json, a path PyPI's robots.txt disallows, before robots.txt was read. The release dates used here were re-read from the allowed feed at pypi.org/rss/project/smallestai/releases.xml, which agrees, and the repository link (fern-demo/smallest-ai-python-sdk) came from that JSON and wasn't re-read

## Humans behind the project (researched 2026-11-06 from public pages, not part of the grade)

### Key people

- Sudarshan Kamath, Co-founder and CEO
- Akshat Mandloi, Co-founder and CTO
- Note: Smallest.ai's press kit, read 6 November 2026, says the company was founded by Sudarshan Kamath and Akshat Mandloi and labels them CEO and CTO, and the Series A post of 5 October 2026 quotes Sudarshan Kamath as CEO. SiliconANGLE's report of 9 October 2025 names Kamath as CEO and Mandloi as CTO. The press kit's personal profile links are drawn by script and weren't readable, so no personal accounts are listed. Investors come from Smallest's own Series A post (Seligman Ventures leading, with Sierra Ventures, 3one4 Capital and six others) and SiliconANGLE's report of the $8 million seed round led by Sierra Ventures. Angels in either round aren't named first-hand and are left out. The Series A post says it brings Smallest AI's total funding to more than $21M, which is the total raised. Neither source states a valuation.

## Prices

| Item | Price | Unit | Note |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Speech from a clone, Lightning v3.1 | $17.50 | per 1M characters | about $0.175 per 10,000 characters, pay as you go |
| Speech from a clone, Lightning v3.1 Pro | $19.50 | per 1M characters | about $0.195 per 10,000 characters, pay as you go |

Across all listings: https://www.anchorterminal.com/prices/index.md

## What a task costs (from the prices above)

| Task | Cost | At |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Narrate a 9,000-character script (about 1,500 words) | $0.16 to $0.18 | Speech from a clone, Lightning v3.1 to Speech from a clone, Lightning v3.1 Pro |

The quantity times this listing's own price, from its cheapest item in that unit to its dearest. Plans, minimums and free allowances aren't counted.

## Strengths

- Synchronous clone from 5 to 15 seconds of audio that returns the voice ID and signed URLs to sample clips of the new voice
- Seven documented error cases with causes, including `voice_clone_timeout` and `voice_clone_error` codes
- A deprecation page dates every retirement and gives the migration steps for clones
- The Terms say customer content isn't used for training, and India and USA region hostnames are documented
- llms.txt and a Markdown copy of every docs page

## Weaknesses

- The endpoint defaults to `lightning-v3.1`, whose clones stop working on 30 November 2026
- No consent or verification field, and no price per clone or clone limit published
- The pricing table marks voice cloning unavailable on pay as you go, while the docs let any key clone
- status.smallest.ai lists dozens of short API outages in 90 days, with a cluster across every region on 13 to 17 September 2026
- No idempotency key, no pagination on the clone list, and plain unscoped API keys

## Before you call it (notes for agents)

1. Always pass `model=lightning-v3.1-pro`. The default `lightning-v3.1` clones stop working on 30 November 2026
2. Use the returned `voiceId` with the matching TTS model and check `modelIds` from `GET /waves/v1/voice-cloning` if a TTS call returns a tiny WAV
3. Before retrying a `voice_clone_timeout`, list clones by `displayName` so a retry doesn't create a duplicate
4. Send the server API key, not an access token. The cloning endpoint refuses short-lived tokens
5. Keep TTS calls from a clone to one at a time on the self-serve plan and back off on 429

## Connect

## Panel reviews (0)

Reviewed by the Anchor panel (https://www.anchorterminal.com/reviewers/index.md): .

Desk reviews, written from public documentation, pricing, terms, source and status history on 1 October 2026. No calls made. For a desk review, the outcome says whether the reviewer's questions could be answered from public material: success, partial or failure. How reviews work: https://www.anchorterminal.com/reviews/how-it-works.md

## Notable

- The clone endpoint defaults to `model=lightning-v3.1`, and the deprecation page says voice clones made on `lightning-v3.1` stop working on 30 November 2026 at 18:30 UTC. New clones should pass `model=lightning-v3.1-pro` (source: <https://docs.smallest.ai/api-reference/deprecations/models>)
- The Terms of Service (effective 21 October 2026) say Smallest may require documentation that the person whose voice is in a recording authorised the clone, and that it won't use User Content or Input to train its services (source: <https://smallest.ai/terms-of-service>)
- The same Terms say a customer may not sell or share the Output with third parties for commercial benefit (source: <https://smallest.ai/terms-of-service>)
- Deleting a clone goes through `DELETE /waves/v1/lightning-large` with the voice ID in the body, which the docs say deletes any clone whatever its model (source: <https://docs.smallest.ai/models/voice-cloning/instant-clone-api>)
- status.smallest.ai, read on 6 November 2026, lists dozens of automated outage alerts on the API components in the 90 days from 8 August, most a few minutes long, with a cluster across every API region from 13 to 17 September (source: <https://status.smallest.ai/feed.rss>)
- security.txt at smallest.ai names security@smallest.ai and expires on 31 December 2026 (source: <https://smallest.ai/.well-known/security.txt>)

## Verify this listing

For the vendor. The badge or a plain link to this page verifies the listing, from a page on smallest.ai or one of its subdomains. It shows the listing is the vendor's and that the vendor knows it's here, and it never changes a grade, rank or review. The vendor sends the page's address to `POST https://www.anchorterminal.com/api/v1/verify` as `{"slug": "smallest-voice-clone", "url": "…"}`, or calls the `verify_listing` tool at https://www.anchorterminal.com/mcp. We fetch the page once, then again every week; two failed checks in a row and the verification lapses, and a later pass restores it.
