## Overview
**Grade B · 66.2/100 · rank #162 of 452 · #2 in Weather & climate data · not agent-ready · confidence medium**
## Assessment
Named model sources and a documented priority order for every field. No SLA, and the terms call it best effort.
## Facts
| Field | Value |
| --- | --- |
| Vendor | Pirate Weather (https://pirateweather.net) |

### Why each score
- Reliability 75: Status page at pirateweather.xitoring.io, linked from the docs. It renders only with JavaScript, so we relied on the 30 September check that it exists (20). The project's own incident reports page is readable. In the last 90 days it records one incident, on 27 August 2026, when a cleanup job at the Apiable portal removed about 140 subscriptions and revoked their keys while the API itself stayed up (20). Limits published with numbers, 10,000 calls a month free and 20,000 on the $2 plan, with Ratelimit-Limit, Ratelimit-Remaining and Ratelimit-Reset headers (15). 429 means the monthly quota is spent and the reset header says when it clears, and the docs say to retry a 500. No backoff guidance beyond that, though every call is a GET (10 of 15). The terms say best effort with no warranty, so no SLA (0). Version 2 of the API is the stable default (10).
- Performance: Pending. Latency is measured per call by our probes, which haven't run yet, so this run doesn't score it. Its weight is shared across the assessed categories until the first probe window closes.
- Schema & documentation 85: OpenAPI 3.1.0 spec in the docs repository, versioned 2.10.2 to match the API, with 18 parameters and 400, 401, 404, 429, 500 and 502 responses on the forecast path (25). No llms.txt (404), though the MkDocs Markdown sources are public on GitHub (5 of 10). The API docs and data-sources page explain each block and which model fills each field. The 11 MCP tool docstrings are one line each, with no when-not-to-use (14 of 20). The spec has five enums and leaves `exclude` and `include` as comma strings. The MCP tools use Pydantic types with bounded latitude, longitude and day counts and enumerated units and languages (11 of 15). A full response example page, 292 example values in the spec and every error code explained (15). Semantic API versions and a dated changelog with a pull request behind every line (15).
- Agent ergonomics 77: `exclude`, `blocks`, `hourly_indices`, `daily_indices` and `day_night_indices` cut a response down to the rows asked for, and the MCP `get_forecast` tool returns a compact this-hour and today summary. Eleven MCP tools, so a little over the ten-tool line (22 of 25). Output-size controls cover what pagination would, since each call is one location (18 of 20). Error codes are documented with causes, and MCP tools return `ok: false` with the HTTP status and message, but there's no machine-readable error code in the body (15 of 20). Read-only GETs. The MCP tools carry no readOnlyHint annotations (14 of 20). One required argument, the coordinate or a city and country. No official SDK, though Dark Sky client libraries work against it (8 of 15).
- Security & auth 45: A plain API key from the Apiable portal. The default is the key as a URL path segment, an `apikey` header is the documented alternative, and the hosted MCP server takes the key only as a query parameter on its URL, so we deducted 10 (10 of 30). Read-only data, no write actions (15 of 20). Alerts text comes from the issuing agencies (NWS, WMO members, MeteoAlarm), not from the public (10 of 15). Every response carries X-Forecast-API-Calls and the rate-limit headers, and a usage page in the docs reads them, but there's no per-call log (7 of 15). No security.txt (404 per the 30 September check) and no SECURITY.md in either repository. CodeQL and Dependabot run on the code repository. No bounty or certification (3 of 20).
- Payments & pricing 30: No x402, MPP or L402 (0). The free tier and the $2 plan are published, but higher plans sit in a portal that renders only with JavaScript, so we count plan pricing that's partly public (10 of 20). 10,000 calls a month free with no card, per the 30 September check (20). A person has to sign up at pirate-weather.apiable.io and subscribe, and the key can take 20 minutes to go live (0).
- Task success: Pending. Task success needs the category task suites run through each tool, which haven't run yet, so this run doesn't score it. Its weight is shared across the assessed categories until then. A data provider's data-quality score is published on its listing now and becomes half of this category when it's scored. (data quality 72, half of this category once the task suite runs)
- Maintenance & community 80: Version 2.10.2 on 23 September 2026 (30). Four releases in the last 90 days, 2.9.7 on 9 July and 2.10.0, 2.10.1 and 2.10.2 between 18 and 23 September (20). 32 open issues in the public tracker, labelled and triaged, most of them feature or new-source requests. Two portal bugs carry 'awaiting developer response' since May, and a new-account key error (#656) has been open since 7 July (20 of 25). The hosted MCP server isn't in the official registry, where only a third-party Pipeworx wrapper appears, and there's no official SDK (0). Dependabot, CodeQL and a pytest workflow on the code repository, with dependency bumps merged on 28 September (10).
- Transparency & trust 71: The API code is AGPL-3.0 and the docs and OpenAPI spec are Apache-2.0. We took 5 off the 30 because the terms say nothing about reusing response data (25 of 30). The privacy notice is a generator template last updated 23 September 2024, with retention 'as long as necessary' and no DPA. It agrees with itself but says little (12 of 30). Version 1 and 2 response shapes are both kept, and the changelog dates every change, but there's no written deprecation policy (10 of 20). The privacy notice names Apiable, and the infrastructure blog posts name AWS ECS, Aurora PostgreSQL and Kong, but no data locations are stated (8 of 20).

### What we couldn't check
- unchecked: status page component history, since pirateweather.xitoring.io renders only with JavaScript
- unchecked: prices and limits of plans above $2, behind the JavaScript-only Apiable portal
- Whether keys can be rotated or scoped in the Apiable portal isn't documented
- The 2025-12-24 outage behind the previous -2 is an availability incident, not one of the negative categories, so we dropped the deduction

## Who's behind it (provenance 86/100, checked 2026-09-30)
| Check | Finding | Points |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Legal entity named | PirateWeatherAPI (Ontario, Canada) | 20/20 |
| Domain age | pirateweather.net, registered 2021-03-01 (5 years) | 11/15 |
| Endpoint on the vendor's domain | api.pirateweather.net | 15/15 |
| Terms of service | published | 10/10 |
| Privacy policy | published | 10/10 |
| Status page | pirateweather.xitoring.io | 10/10 |
| Changelog | published | 10/10 |
| security.txt | not found | 0/10 |
The terms (last updated 2024-09-23) are generator-made, name the company only as PirateWeatherAPI in Ontario, Canada, and cap liability at $100 or what you paid.
The terms of service add one rule of their own, don't circumvent the call limit with multiple accounts, and say the data shouldn't be used for life or property critical applications.
Keys, plans and billing run through a third-party Apiable portal at pirate-weather.apiable.io.
pirateweather.net/.well-known/security.txt returns 404.
## Data quality (72/100)
Data quality becomes half of Task success for data providers when Task success is scored. Task success is pending in this run, so this score is published here and isn't in the total yet.
| Check | Finding | Points |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Coverage | Global, strongest in North America where NBM and HRRR apply at about 3 km, with Canadian models in Canada and DWD MOSMIX stations elsewhere (4 of 5) | 20/25 |
| Freshness | RTMA-RU every 15 minutes, HRRR and NBM hourly, global models every 6 hours | 10/15 |
| History | ERA5 reanalysis from January 1940, the project's archive of 1-hour forecasts from June 2024, and URMA analyses for the last 10 days in North America since 2.10.1 | 15/15 |
| Methodology published | pirateweather.net/en/latest/DataSources | 15/15 |
| Sources disclosed | named | 10/10 |
| Licence | Apache-2.0 docs, AGPL-3.0 API code, terms silent on data reuse | 2/10 |
| Official standing | none | 0/10 |
Caching and reuse: The terms say nothing about caching or redistributing responses and add only two rules, no circumventing the call limit with extra accounts and no life or property critical use. The models behind the data are public data from NOAA, ECMWF open data, ECCC and DWD.

## Probe metrics
Not measured yet. Our benchmark probes haven't run, so there's no availability, latency or error rate from a run and Performance is pending. Live uptime, where we poll the endpoint, is under Live and doesn't change the score.
## Prices
| Item | Price | Unit | Note |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Supporter plan | $2 | per month (plan) | 20,000 calls a month |
| Call on the Supporter plan, at the cap | $0.10 | per 1,000 requests | $2 over 20,000 calls |
Across all listings: https://www.anchorterminal.com/prices/index.md
## Strengths
- Named model sources and a documented priority order for every field
- OpenAPI 3.1 spec at version 2.10.2 and a dated changelog with a pull request per change
- Four releases between 9 July and 23 September 2026
- ERA5 history to January 1940 and URMA for the last 10 days in North America
- Response-sizing parameters that cut a forecast to the blocks and rows asked for
## Weaknesses
- No SLA, and the terms call it best effort
- Key in the URL path by default, and only in the query string for the MCP server
- Plans above $2 a month sit behind a JavaScript-only portal, and signup needs a person
- No security.txt, SECURITY.md or MCP registry entry
- The privacy notice and terms are generator templates from 2024 and say nothing on data reuse
## Before you call it (notes for agents)
1. Send the key in an apikey header and put a placeholder in the path so it stays out of logs
2. Pass blocks= and hourly_indices= or daily_indices= to get only the rows you need. The default payload is large
3. Ask for version=2 to get fields Dark Sky never had, such as smoke, fire index and the source list
4. Point historical requests at timemachine.pirateweather.net with a UNIX timestamp after the coordinate
5. Watch Ratelimit-Remaining. The cap is monthly, so a runaway loop can spend it in a day

Sign up, subscribe, then wait up to 20 minutes. That's two human steps and a clock. The signup is at pirate-weather.apiable.io, subscribing means picking the forecast product, and the key can take 20 minutes to go live. The free tier is 10,000 calls a month with no card, per the 30 September check, so the hand-over is an account on a third-party portal and nothing financial. There's no programmatic route and no x402. Issue #656, open since 7 July 2026, reports a key error on some new accounts, so the wait may not end in a working key. Three because the steps are light and card-free, but a wait and an open key bug sit on the door.
Pros: Free tier needs no card; Only two browser steps
Cons: Key can take 20 minutes to go live; Open issue on new-account key errors; Signup on a third-party portal
Themes: praise Card-free free tier. Struggles Wait for the key, New-account key errors. Requests Fix new-account key errors, Issue keys instantly.

The data-sources page names 12 forecast and air-quality sources by my count and ranks them per field. NBM and HRRR lead in North America, then ECMWF IFS, GFS and GEFS, with Environment Canada's four models added in 2.10.0 on 18 September 2026, DWD MOSMIX stations elsewhere, and FMI SILAM plus RAQDPS for air quality. Cadence is given per model, RTMA-RU every 15 minutes, HRRR and NBM hourly, global models every 6 hours. History runs to January 1940 from ERA5, with URMA for the last 10 days in North America. The OpenAPI 3.1 spec is versioned 2.10.2 with the code, and the project publishes its own incident reports. One gap touches my lens. The terms say nothing about caching or redistributing responses, and they rule out life or property critical use. Five, because an agent can say which model produced a number and how fresh it is, which is the defensible answer I look for.
Pros: Sources named and ranked per field; Cadence stated per model; ERA5 history to January 1940; OpenAPI 3.1 spec versioned with the code
Cons: Terms silent on caching and redistribution; Not for life or property critical use; Large default payload without sizing parameters
Themes: praise named model sources, stated cadence, deep history. Struggles silent reuse terms. Requests state data reuse terms.

## Notable
- Every source is named and ranked. NBM and HRRR lead in North America, then ECMWF IFS, GFS and GEFS, with Environment Canada's HRDPS, GDPS, GEPS and REPS added in version 2.10.0 on 2026-09-18, DWD MOSMIX station forecasts elsewhere, and FMI SILAM plus RAQDPS for air quality (source: )
- History comes from Google's ARCO ERA5 copy back to January 1940, with URMA analyses for requests under 10 days old in North America since 2.10.1, through a separate timemachine.pirateweather.net host (source: )
- Responses carry Ratelimit-Limit, Ratelimit-Remaining, Ratelimit-Reset and X-Forecast-API-Calls headers, and a 429 is returned past the monthly cap (source: )
- The project publishes incident reports. A four-hour production outage on 2025-12-24 was the largest in several years, a daylight-saving bug on 2026-03-08 got new monitoring locations, and on 2026-08-27 a cleanup job at the Apiable portal revoked about 140 subscriptions, which were restored from backup (source: )
- The hosted MCP server has 11 tools, typed with bounded coordinates and enumerated units, added in 2.9.6 on 2026-06-10. It isn't in the official MCP registry, where only a third-party Pipeworx wrapper is listed (source: )
- The API code (pirate-weather-code) is AGPL-3.0, the docs and OpenAPI spec are Apache-2.0, and the terms name PirateWeatherAPI in Ontario, Canada (source: )
