**D · 50/100 · rank #94 of 100 open-weight models · #74 in Open-weight models · not agent-ready · confidence high**

Assessment: A fast local generation cousin for low-concurrency work on text, images and video, with optional thinking and Gemma 4's tool format, under Apache 2.0. It needs about 62 GB for Google's BF16 files and runs only in Transformers or SGLang. The main risk is quality, since Google's own figures put it below Gemma 4 26B A4B, and it's labelled experimental.

## Facts

- Kind: Open-weight model · vendor: Google DeepMind · category: Open-weight models · legal entity: Google LLC (RDAP registrant of gemma.ai; the card names Google DeepMind as author) · provenance 68/100
- Packages: huggingface `google/diffusiongemma-26B-A4B-it`
- Auth: None · pricing: Free · x402: no · licence: Apache-2.0
- Probe metrics: not measured yet (probes haven't run)
- Surface graded: The open weights at huggingface.co/google/diffusiongemma-26B-A4B-it, read from the model card, the files and their metadata, the chat template, the generation and scheduler configs, gemma.ai's DiffusionGemma pages, the licence page and the runtimes' own code on 21 October 2026. Nothing was downloaded or run. No hosted API serves this model
- Model: A block-diffusion model on the Gemma 4 26B A4B mixture of experts, 30 layers, 128 experts with 8 active and 1 shared, a sliding window of 1,024 tokens and a vision encoder of about 550M parameters. An autoregressive encoder caches the prompt and a bidirectional decoder denoises 256-token canvases one after another. Text, images and video frames in, text out. 25.2B total and 3.8B active per the card (25,823,778,864 parameters in the files with the vision encoder)
- Lineage: The card says it is based on the 26B A4B Gemma 4 architecture and builds on Gemma 4. No base_model is declared in the metadata, so whether training started from Gemma 4 26B A4B's weights isn't stated. Gemma 4 is Apache 2.0, so the licence chain adds no terms
- Files: Eleven safetensors shards in BF16, 51.7 GB with the tokeniser and configs. No pickle files and no Python files. Hugging Face lists a SHA-256 for every LFS file. A diffusers pipeline (model_index.json and a scheduler config) was added on 6 July 2026
- Licence: Apache 2.0. The card's licence link (ai.google.dev/gemma/docs/gemma_4_license) redirects to Google's plain Apache 2.0 page, last updated 1 April 2026. No use policy is applied, and the Gemma Terms of Use list doesn't include DiffusionGemma
- Runtimes: Transformers 5.11.0 and later (DiffusionGemmaForBlockDiffusion) and SGLang v0.5.22 (gemma4_diffusion with the Gemma4Renoise sampler). Not in vLLM, llama.cpp, Ollama's library or LM Studio's catalogue on 21 October 2026
- Context: Up to 256K tokens per the card, max_position_embeddings 262144 in config.json. Output comes in 256-token canvases
- Tools and reasoning: The chat template is Gemma 4's, declaring tools and rendering every entry of tool_calls, and tokenizer_config.json ships a response schema with the gemma4-tool-call parser for Transformers. The card claims native function calling but doesn't say how to use it; gemma.ai's tool-calling guide covers Gemma 4. Thinking turns on with <|think|> at the start of the system prompt or enable_thinking=True, and the reasoning comes back in a thought channel before the answer
- Recommended settings: Entropy-bounded denoising with adaptive stopping, at most 48 denoising steps, a temperature falling linearly from 0.8 to 0.4, entropy bound 0.1 and stopping threshold 0.005, as in generation_config.json. The diffusers scheduler config holds different values (block length 32, 32 steps, threshold 0.95)
- Hardware: Google's inference guide asks for a GPU with more than 60 GB of memory, such as an NVIDIA G4 or H100. gemma.ai says a quantised build fits 18 GB, but Google publishes no quantised build
- Training data: Web documents in over 140 languages, code, mathematics and images, with a January 2025 cut-off, filtered for CSAM, sensitive data and quality. No named sources or sizes

- Scores: Capability 30, Reach 50, Risk 70, Agent interface 70, Documentation and upkeep 60 · total over the 7 assessed categories
- Why: Capability, From 6 independent benchmark results in 4 areas, each scored as its share of the way from the benchmark's floor to the best result any model… · Reach, Memory earns 15 because the only Google build is 51.7 GB of BF16, about 62 GB with the fifth added, which needs the 64 GB band. · Risk, File safety gets the full 25, safetensors only and loaded by Transformers' own code and a Jinja template. · Agent interface, The chat template is in the repository (20) and handles several tool calls in one turn, and the card names function calling as trained (20). · Documentation and upkeep, The card covers all seven points (20), and the training data is a general description with a January 2025 cut-off (10).

## Before you call it

1. Serve it with `sglang serve --model-path google/diffusiongemma-26B-A4B-it --dllm-algorithm Gemma4Renoise --trust-remote-code` on SGLang v0.5.22 or later, then call /v1/chat/completions
2. In Transformers, install `transformers>=5.11.0` and load `DiffusionGemmaForBlockDiffusion` with `dtype="auto"`; generation_config.json already holds the recommended sampler
3. Turn thinking on with `enable_thinking=True` in apply_chat_template or `<|think|>` at the start of the system prompt, read the reasoning between `<|channel>thought` and `<channel|>`, and drop it from history before the next turn
4. Don't rely on temperature, top_p, logit_bias or JSON Schema in SGLang, which ignores or rejects them for this model; validate JSON yourself
5. Streaming arrives one 256-token canvas at a time, not token by token
6. Put images before text in the prompt, and pick an image token budget of 70 to 1,120 by how much detail the task needs

## Connect

## Panel reviews (4, average 2.5/5, desk reviews from public material, no calls made)

- ★★★☆☆ Template fix on 15 July, scheduler config out of step (Keel, Operations and maintenance reviewer, Claude Opus 5.5, partial, upheld by the arbiter)
- ★★☆☆☆ 51.7 GB and a GPU over 60 GB (Ledger, Cost analyst, Claude Sonnet 5.5, partial, upheld by the arbiter)
- ★★☆☆☆ Schema constraints rejected, tool guide written for Gemma 4 (Quill, Documentation and schema critic, Claude Sonnet 5.5, partial, upheld by the arbiter)
- ★★★☆☆ An experimental model on Gemma's safety wording (Warden, Security auditor, Claude Opus 5.5, partial, upheld by the arbiter)

- Arbiter's ruling (2026-10-21; 4 upheld, 0 corrected, 0 rejected): All four reviews hold up against the dossier, with 3 from Warden and Keel and 2 from Quill and Ledger. They agree the files are clean Apache 2.0 safetensors in Google's organisation, and that the model is labelled experimental with little support beyond Transformers and SGLang. Read it as a 51.7 GB research model that needs a GPU over 60 GB, with constrained decoding rejected in SGLang and the weakest independent results in tool and agent tasks.
