# Basecamp > Basecamp is 37signals' hosted project tool with to-dos, card tables, message boards, schedules, chat and files. Agents reach it through a REST API with a public OpenAPI spec, seven SDKs and an official CLI with agent skills and MCP. - Canonical: https://www.anchorterminal.com/tools/basecamp - Markdown: https://www.anchorterminal.com/tools/basecamp.md (~8,350 tokens) - Slim: https://www.anchorterminal.com/tools/basecamp.min.md (~2,130 tokens, same facts, less prose, for token-sensitive contexts) - JSON: https://www.anchorterminal.com/tools/basecamp.json (this page as data, same URL with Accept: application/json) - Site index for agents: https://www.anchorterminal.com/llms.txt (full text: https://www.anchorterminal.com/llms-full.txt) - API: https://www.anchorterminal.com/api/v1/index.json - Updated: 2026-10-08 ## Overview **Grade B · 67.9/100 · rank #197 of 722 · #3 in Project & task management · not agent-ready · confidence medium** ## Assessment The REST API has a public OpenAPI 3.1 spec with 279 operations, OAuth with read and full scopes, DPoP and a revocation endpoint, and an official CLI built for agents. The terms state there is no SLA, the vendor says it holds no SOC 2 or ISO 27001, and non-idempotent POSTs have no idempotency key. ## Facts | Field | Value | | --- | --- | | Vendor | 37signals LLC (https://basecamp.com) | | Kind | HTTP API | | Category | Project & task management (https://www.anchorterminal.com/categories/project-management) | | Transport | HTTP, stdio | | Endpoint | `https://3.basecampapi.com` | | Auth | OAuth · Every request carries an OAuth 2 bearer token, with no API key. Access is self-serve with no app review. A signed-in user registers an integration at launchpad.37signals.com/integrations for the authorisation code flow, or the CLI logs in by device flow as a pre-registered public client and a person approves a code in a browser. The app.basecamp.com issuer publishes `read` and `full` scopes, DPoP, rotation of refresh tokens and a revocation endpoint. The CLI docs also describe personal access tokens for bots and CI on accounts that have them, and agent principals that use the client-credentials grant. | | Pricing | Freemium ($25 / mo) · Free plan at $0 with one project, 1 GB and five users, and the terms say free plans ask for no card. Paid plans are flat with no per-user fee. Freelancer $25 a month, Studio $59, Pro $99 and Unlimited $299 a month billed yearly, with 30-day trials (45 on Unlimited). API calls aren't metered, and CLI access for agents is listed on every plan. No separate sandbox was found, so testing happens on a free account (https://basecamp.com/pricing, checked 2026-10-08). | | x402 | No · No x402, MPP or L402 in the API docs, the OpenAPI spec or the pricing page (checked 2026-10-08). | | Licence | Proprietary service under the 37signals terms of service. The CLI, the SDKs and the OpenAPI spec on GitHub are MIT, and the API docs are CC BY-SA 4.0 | | Packages | npm: `@37signals/basecamp`; pypi: `basecamp-sdk`; go: `github.com/basecamp/basecamp-sdk/go` | | Source | https://github.com/basecamp/basecamp-cli | | Docs | https://github.com/basecamp/bc-api | | llms.txt | not found | | Last release | 2026-10-07 | | GitHub stars | 286 (as of 2026-10-08) | | npm downloads / week | 3,113 | | PyPI downloads / week | 1,892 | | API | REST over HTTPS at https://3.basecampapi.com/{accountId}/, JSON only, no version in the path. OpenAPI 3.1, version 2026-09-15, 279 operations on 187 paths (134 GET, 55 PUT, 29 DELETE, 61 POST per the SDK's `behavior-model.json`) | | Docs | Markdown reference at https://github.com/basecamp/bc-api (renamed from `bc3-api`), 71 section files, mirrored from the vendor's private repository. 42 commits between 10 July and 30 September 2026 | | Credentials | OAuth 2 bearer tokens. Issuer app.basecamp.com with scopes `full`, `read`, `mcp`, `offline_access`, PKCE S256, DPoP, device flow, client credentials, pushed authorisation requests, revocation and introspection endpoints, and a client registration endpoint. Older issuer launchpad.37signals.com, two-week access tokens, no scopes | | Agent accounts | An agent is a person type of its own. It authenticates with a client-credentials token, reaches only its projects and a documented list of endpoints (event feed, messages, comments, chat lines, boosts, subscriptions, reads of to-dos and cards), and gets 403 elsewhere | | CLI | `basecamp` v0.13.0 (7 October 2026), MIT, Go. JSON envelope with breadcrumbs, error `code` and `retryable`. Tokens in the OS keyring. Three agent skills (`basecamp`, `basecamp-connect`, `basecamp-doctor`) and plugins for Claude Code and Codex | | MCP | `basecamp mcp` runs a stdio server with 16 domain tools, each taking an action and params and serving per-action schemas through `describe`. `--read-only` and `--domains` narrow it. The pricing page lists hosted ChatGPT and Claude connectors with MCP as coming soon | | SDKs | `basecamp-sdk` v0.24.0 (7 October 2026) for Go, Ruby, TypeScript, Swift, Kotlin, Python and Rust, generated from one Smithy model, MIT. npm `@37signals/basecamp`, PyPI, RubyGems and crates.io `basecamp-sdk` | | Rate limits | 50 requests per 10 seconds per IP is the one published number. 429 carries `Retry-After`. An unauthenticated call returned an `x-ratelimit` header with period 10, limit 50 and the remaining count | | Pagination | `Link` header with `rel="next"` and `X-Total-Count`. Page sizes are 15, 30, 50, then 100. `ETag` and `Last-Modified` for conditional requests | | Events | Webhooks per project for 18 content types over HTTPS, up to 10 delivery attempts with growing delays. An account-wide event feed with a WebSocket stream and polling, which the docs say is not an audit log | | Reports and search | `/reports/todos/overdue.json`, assignments by person, upcoming schedule and timesheets. `/search.json` across the account with type, project and creator filters | | Status | https://www.37status.com with a Basecamp 5 component and 90 days of daily uptime. 29 September 2026, Basecamp 5 and HEY down for 24 minutes. 4 August 2026, chat offline for 9 minutes | | Security programme | HackerOne bug bounty, security@37signals.com, CAIQ v4.1 and HECVAT 4 self-assessments, PCI DSS SAQ A certificate. No SOC 2 or ISO 27001, per the trust centre. Colocation provider's SOC 3 published | | Data | Stored in the United States on the vendor's own hardware. Uploaded files encrypted at rest, application databases generally not. Deleted from active systems within 30 days of cancellation and from backups within 60. 12 sub-processors listed, updated 5 October 2026 | | Capabilities | tasks.create, tasks.update, projects.manage, tasks.comments, projects.reporting, work.chat, work.docs, events.webhooks-send | | Tags | official, hosted, closed-source, oauth, openapi, webhooks, cli, mcp, go, typescript, python, ruby, free-tier, no-card, status-page, bug-bounty | | JSON | https://www.anchorterminal.com/api/v1/tools/basecamp.json | ## Score breakdown (methodology v0.4, October 2026 research run) Assessed 2026-10-08 from public evidence against the published checklist (https://www.anchorterminal.com/benchmark/#checklist). Confidence: medium. Performance and Task success pending (no score, not in the total); the total is Σ(score × weight) ÷ 80 over the 7 assessed categories. "This run" is each category's share of the 100 points. | Category | Weight | This run | Score (0–100) | Points | | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | | Reliability | 16% | 20 | 74 | 14.8 | | Performance | 10% | pending | pending | n/a | | Schema & documentation | 13% | 16.2 | 80 | 13.0 | | Agent ergonomics | 13% | 16.2 | 65 | 10.6 | | Security & auth | 14% | 17.5 | 67 | 11.7 | | Payments & pricing | 10% | 12.5 | 30 | 3.8 | | Task success | 10% | pending | pending | n/a | | Maintenance & community | 7% | 8.8 | 82 | 7.2 | | Transparency & trust (editorial 72, provenance 86) | 7% | 8.8 | 79 | 6.9 | | Negative events | up to −15 | up to −15 | none recorded | 0 | | **Total** | | | | **67.9 → B** | ### Why each score - Reliability 74: Graded on the hosted lines for the REST API. 37status.com has a Basecamp 5 component with 90 days of daily uptime and an incident feed (20). In the 90 days to 8 October 2026 the feed lists Basecamp 5 and HEY down for 24 minutes on 29 September and chat offline for 9 minutes on 4 August, both under an hour (20). The docs publish one number, 50 requests per 10 seconds per IP, and say other limits exist and change dynamically. An unauthenticated call returned an `x-ratelimit` header with the same figures (12). 429 carries `Retry-After`, 5xx may be retried with exponential backoff and 404 must not be. The SDK model marks which mutations are safe to repeat, but there are no idempotency keys (12). The terms say 37signals does not offer service-level agreements (0). The API is generally available. The CLI and SDKs are 0.x releases (10). - Performance: Pending. Latency is measured per call by our probes, which haven't run yet, so this run doesn't score it. Its weight is shared across the assessed categories until the first probe window closes. - Schema & documentation 80: OpenAPI 3.1 in the `basecamp-sdk` repository, version 2026-09-15, 279 operations on 187 paths (25). basecamp.com/llms.txt returned 404, but the whole API reference is Markdown in the `bc-api` repository and the CLI ships three agent skills (10). All 279 operations have a description and none has a summary. The reference adds a key concepts section and the list of endpoints an agent's own token may call, with little guidance on when not to use a route (15). 479 schemas with required fields and formats, but one enum and two length limits in the whole spec, so allowed values live in prose (9). Each reference section has example JSON and a cURL line. The spec documents 401, 403 and 500 on every operation, 429 on 161, 404 on 156 and 422 on 98 (13). The spec is dated and the SDK has a `MIGRATING.md`, but the API has no version in its path and no changelog of its own was found (8). - Agent ergonomics 65: No field selection and no page-size parameter were found. Pages are fixed at 15, 30, 50 and then 100 items, and `ETag` allows 304 responses. The CLI's `--quiet` and the MCP server's `--domains` trim what an agent loads (12). `Link` header paging with `X-Total-Count`, status, sort and date filters on lists, and account-wide search with type, project and creator filters (14). Status codes are documented with their causes, such as the `Reason: Account Inactive` header on 404, and bodies are `{"error": "..."}`. The CLI adds a stable `code` and a `retryable` flag (15). The spec flags 97 mutations as idempotent and the SDKs never retry the other 48 POSTs. There are no idempotency keys, and no MCP annotations were found in the CLI source (10). Seven official SDKs and flat routes that need only a resource ID. Every call needs an account ID and a `User-Agent` header (14). - Security & auth 67: OAuth at app.basecamp.com with PKCE, DPoP, device flow, client credentials, refresh tokens that rotate with reuse detection and a revocation endpoint. Scopes are only `read` and `full`, and tokens from the older Launchpad issuer carry none. Chatbot posting URLs carry a key in the path, which we did not count as a query-string secret (28). A `read` scope, agent principals limited to their projects and a documented endpoint list, `basecamp mcp --read-only`, and deletes that go to a trash kept about 25 days. No confirmation step in the API (15). The `basecamp-connect` skill says other people's text is input and not instructions. The API docs have no such guidance (8). Each recording has an events list, and the docs say the event feed is not an audit log. No operator log of API calls was found (5). Security response page, HackerOne bounty and CAIQ and HECVAT self-assessments. No security.txt, and the trust centre says there is no SOC 2 or ISO 27001 (11). - Payments & pricing 30: No x402, MPP or L402 in the docs, the spec or the pricing page (0). Plan prices are public and flat (Freelancer $25, Studio $59, Pro $99 a month, Unlimited $299 a month billed yearly), with nothing charged per call (10). The Free plan is $0 for one project and five users, and the terms say free plans ask for no card. We didn't run the signup form (20). A person signs up in a browser, and the device flow needs a person to approve a code. The OAuth server has a client registration endpoint, which registers a client and not an account (0). - Task success: Pending. Task success needs the category task suites run through each tool, which haven't run yet, so this run doesn't score it. Its weight is shared across the assessed categories until then. A data provider's data-quality score is published on its listing now and becomes half of this category when it's scored. - Maintenance & community 82: CLI v0.13.0 and SDK v0.24.0 were both tagged on 7 October 2026 (30). The SDK has ten tags and the CLI nine releases since 3 August 2026 (20). Closed service. The docs repository had 42 commits between 10 July and 30 September 2026. Questions go to a support ticket, and the three newest CLI issues, opened on 6 and 7 October, had no reply yet. We didn't read older issues (9). Current official SDKs in seven languages, published to npm, PyPI, RubyGems and crates.io on 7 October 2026 (15). Both repositories have test, CodeQL, Scorecard and Dependabot workflows. We didn't confirm the runs pass (8). - Transparency & trust 79: Closed service under clear terms, last updated 16 September 2026, which include API terms. The CLI, SDKs and spec are MIT and the docs CC BY-SA 4.0 (17). The privacy policy and terms agree on retention, with content removed from active systems within 30 days of cancellation and from backups within 60, and trashed items purged within 90. A data processing addendum is part of the terms, and the policy says content is not used to train AI. Application databases are generally not encrypted at rest, which the vendor states itself (27). The docs say older project-scoped routes will keep working in perpetuity and a company policy promises to keep products running, but the terms allow changes with or without notice and no dated API deprecation policy was found (10). The Basecamp sub-processor list, updated 5 October 2026, names 12 companies with countries. Data is stored in the United States, and new sub-processors are announced on a feed (18). Fix list for a coding agent, everything this grade says the listing lacks, the biggest gain first (18 items): https://www.anchorterminal.com/fixes/basecamp.md (JSON https://www.anchorterminal.com/fixes/basecamp.json) ### What we couldn't check - unchecked: the HackerOne programme page for Basecamp, which needs JavaScript. The bounty is taken from 37signals' security response page - unchecked: whether signing up for the Free plan asks for a card. The terms say free versions ask for none, and we didn't run the form - unchecked: whether CI passes on the default branches of `basecamp-cli` and `basecamp-sdk`. The workflow files are there - unchecked: which accounts have personal access tokens. The CLI README and the API docs describe them, while the SDK README says there is no personal access token - unchecked: the CAIQ answers on audit logging, and the help centre, for an admin log of API activity. None was found in the API docs - The metadata at app.basecamp.com lists an `mcp` scope and the pricing page says MCP connectors are coming soon. No hosted MCP endpoint was found, and the MCP registry search for basecamp returned nothing - The docs say rate limits other than 50 requests per 10 seconds per IP exist and change dynamically. Their numbers aren't published - The lead named the docs repository `bc3-api`. It now redirects to `bc-api`, the docs call the product Basecamp 5, and the OpenAPI spec lives in the `basecamp-sdk` repository - The status feed and page were read once on 8 October 2026. We ran no probes ### Sources - API reference (Markdown, cloned): (seen 2026-10-08) - authentication guide: (seen 2026-10-08) - OpenAPI spec: (seen 2026-10-08) - SDK repository, README, SPEC.md and security guarantees (cloned): (seen 2026-10-08) - CLI repository, README, skills and security policy (cloned): (seen 2026-10-08) - CLI releases: (seen 2026-10-08) - CLI issues: (seen 2026-10-08) - OAuth authorisation server metadata: (seen 2026-10-08) - OAuth protected resource metadata: (seen 2026-10-08) - agents page: (seen 2026-10-08) - pricing: (seen 2026-10-08) - status page: (seen 2026-10-08) - status incidents feed: (seen 2026-10-08) - terms of service: (seen 2026-10-08) - privacy policy: (seen 2026-10-08) - data processing addendum: (seen 2026-10-08) - Basecamp sub-processors: (seen 2026-10-08) - security overview: (seen 2026-10-08) - security response: (seen 2026-10-08) - trust centre: (seen 2026-10-08) - Until the End of the Internet policy: (seen 2026-10-08) - product updates: (seen 2026-10-08) - security.txt (404): (seen 2026-10-08) - llms.txt (404): (seen 2026-10-08) - npm package: (seen 2026-10-08) - PyPI package: (seen 2026-10-08) - MCP registry search (no result): (seen 2026-10-08) - RDAP for basecamp.com: (seen 2026-10-08) - RDAP for basecampapi.com: (seen 2026-10-08) ## Who's behind it (provenance 86/100, checked 2026-10-08) | Check | Finding | Points | | --- | --- | --- | | Legal entity named | 37signals LLC | 20/20 | | Domain age | basecamp.com, registered 1994-07-30 (32 years) | 15/15 | | Endpoint on the vendor's domain | 3.basecampapi.com | 15/15 | | Terms of service | read, states 5 of the 7 things a reader expects, and has 1 clause that costs points | 6.3/10 | | Privacy policy | read, states 8 of the 8 things a reader expects | 10/10 | | Status page | www.37status.com | 10/10 | | Changelog | published | 10/10 | | security.txt | not found | 0/10 | The terms of service (last updated 16 September 2026) define the company as 37signals LLC, name Basecamp among the services and carry the API terms. basecamp.com/about/policies/terms redirects to this page. The privacy policy (last updated 16 September 2026) gives the address 137 N. Oak Park Avenue, Suite 208, Oak Park, IL 60301 USA. It says content handled for a customer is governed by the services agreement and the data processing addendum, which the terms incorporate. The API answers at 3.basecampapi.com. RDAP gives basecampapi.com a registration date of 2016-03-17 and basecamp.com 1994-07-30. OAuth runs at app.basecamp.com, with launchpad.37signals.com as the older issuer. security.txt returned 404 on basecamp.com, 37signals.com and app.basecamp.com. The security response page sends reports to HackerOne and security@37signals.com. No changelog for the API itself was found. The changelog link is the CLI's release list, and API changes show as dated commits in the `bc-api` docs repository. updates.37signals.com had no entry later than 9 January 2026. ### Terms and privacy, as read A reading by a fixed set of rules, each answered with the vendor's own sentence. Our benchmark probes haven't run, so there's no availability, latency or error rate from a run and Performance is pending. Live uptime, where we poll the endpoint, is under Live and doesn't change the score. ## Prices | Item | Price | Unit | Note | | --- | --- | --- | --- | | Freelancer | $25 | per month (plan) | up to 3 active projects, 20 users, 5 GB | | Studio | $59 | per month (plan) | up to 10 active projects, unlimited users, 25 GB | | Pro | $99 | per month (plan) | up to 25 active projects, unlimited users, 100 GB | | Unlimited | $299 | per month (plan) | billed yearly, unlimited projects and users, 1,000 GB | Across all listings: https://www.anchorterminal.com/prices/index.md ## Strengths - Public OpenAPI 3.1 spec (version 2026-09-15) with 279 operations on 187 paths, each with a description, in the MIT-licensed `basecamp-sdk` repository - The OAuth server at app.basecamp.com publishes `read`, `full`, `mcp` and `offline_access` scopes, PKCE, DPoP, device flow, client credentials and a revocation endpoint - Official CLI (v0.13.0, 7 October 2026) returns a JSON envelope with a stable error `code` and a `retryable` flag, and includes a stdio MCP server with a `--read-only` mode - An agent principal with its own client-credentials token reaches only the projects it was added to and a documented list of endpoints - Free plan at $0 with one project and five users, and the terms say free plans ask for no card. Paid plans are flat monthly prices with no per-user fee ## Weaknesses - The terms of service state that 37signals does not offer service-level agreements - The trust centre says 37signals holds no SOC 2 report or ISO 27001 certificate, and security.txt returned 404 on three hosts - No idempotency keys. The SDK's own model marks 48 POST operations as not safe to retry, so a retried create can duplicate a to-do - No field selection or page-size parameter was found. Pages are fixed at 15, 30, 50 and then 100 items - Only one rate limit has a published number (50 requests per 10 seconds per IP). The docs say other limits exist and change dynamically - Scopes are coarse, `read` or `full`, and tokens issued by the older Launchpad server carry no scope ## Before you call it (notes for agents) 1. Send a `User-Agent` header with an app name and a contact address on every call. Requests without one get 400. 2. Call `GET https://3.basecampapi.com/authorization.json` first to find the account ID, then prefix every path with it. 3. Follow the `Link` header for the next page and never build page URLs. On 429 wait for the `Retry-After` seconds. 4. Don't retry a failed POST that creates a to-do, message or comment without checking whether it landed. PUT, DELETE and 13 flagged POSTs are safe to repeat. 5. How it works: https://www.anchorterminal.com/letme/index.md ## Similar tools Ranked by shared capabilities, then score. Desk reviews, written from public documentation, pricing, terms, source and status history on 1 October 2026. No calls made. For a desk review, the outcome says whether the reviewer's questions could be answered from public material: success, partial or failure. How reviews work: https://www.anchorterminal.com/reviews/how-it-works.md ## Notable - The docs and the status page call the current product Basecamp 5, served at app.basecamp.com. The API host is still 3.basecampapi.com and the docs repository was renamed from `bc3-api` to `bc-api` (source: ) - An agent is its own person type. With a client-credentials token it reaches only its projects and a documented list of endpoints, and other calls answer 403 (source: ) - OAuth server metadata lists scopes `full`, `read`, `mcp` and `offline_access`, DPoP, device flow, client credentials, a revocation endpoint and a client registration endpoint (source: ) - `basecamp mcp` in the CLI runs a stdio MCP server with 16 domain tools and a `--read-only` flag. The pricing page lists ChatGPT and Claude connectors with MCP support as coming soon (source: ) - The terms say 37signals does not offer service-level agreements, and the trust centre says it holds no SOC 2 report or ISO 27001 certificate and publishes CAIQ and HECVAT self-assessments instead (source: ) - The privacy policy says the products have no built-in AI that processes content and that content is not used to train AI models (source: ) - The SDK's `behavior-model.json` classifies all 279 operations for retry. 97 mutations are marked idempotent and 48 POSTs are attempted once (source: ) ## Compare - [Asana vs Basecamp](https://www.anchorterminal.com/compare/asana-vs-basecamp.md): BB 70.1 vs B 67.9 - [Basecamp vs ClickUp](https://www.anchorterminal.com/compare/basecamp-vs-clickup.md): B 67.9 vs C 60.9 - [Basecamp vs monday.com](https://www.anchorterminal.com/compare/basecamp-vs-monday.md): B 67.9 vs BB 76.4 - [Basecamp vs Plane](https://www.anchorterminal.com/compare/basecamp-vs-plane.md): B 67.9 vs B 67.6 - [Basecamp vs Roma](https://www.anchorterminal.com/compare/basecamp-vs-roma.md): B 67.9 vs D 51.1 - [Basecamp vs Shortcut](https://www.anchorterminal.com/compare/basecamp-vs-shortcut.md): B 67.9 vs C 60.2 - [Basecamp vs Teamwork.com](https://www.anchorterminal.com/compare/basecamp-vs-teamwork.md): B 67.9 vs B 65.9 - [Basecamp vs Todoist](https://www.anchorterminal.com/compare/basecamp-vs-todoist.md): B 67.9 vs B 66.9 - [Basecamp vs Trello](https://www.anchorterminal.com/compare/basecamp-vs-trello.md): B 67.9 vs C 61.1 - [Basecamp vs Wrike](https://www.anchorterminal.com/compare/basecamp-vs-wrike.md): B 67.9 vs C 60.1 - [Basecamp vs YouTrack](https://www.anchorterminal.com/compare/basecamp-vs-youtrack.md): B 67.9 vs D 49.9 ## Verify this listing For the vendor. The badge or a plain link to this page verifies the listing, from a page on basecamp.com or one of its subdomains, or the README of github.com/basecamp/basecamp-cli. It shows the listing is the vendor's and that the vendor knows it's here, and it never changes a grade, rank or review. The vendor sends the page's address to `POST https://www.anchorterminal.com/api/v1/verify` as `{"slug": "basecamp", "url": "…"}`, or calls the `verify_listing` tool at https://www.anchorterminal.com/mcp. We fetch the page once, then again every week; two failed checks in a row and the verification lapses, and a later pass restores it.
