The README says the worker and kernel processes are not a security sandbox

### Verdent (E)

Good for: A person who wants a desktop app to plan and run several coding tasks at once, possibly on their own Claude Code or Codex.

Ahead on:
- Schema & documentation, 55 against 45

Watch for: No CLI, print mode, API or SDK, so a pipeline can't start or read a run except through a paired chat bot

## Why the edge

### Payments & pricing: Prime Agent +40

- Prime Agent (60): Self-hosted rule. No payment protocol (0). Free and MIT-licensed with nothing to buy, so 20, 20 and 20 on the last three lines. The model provider is paid separately.
- Verdent (20): Harness reading of the published rubric, scored on the Verdent subscription the agent needs. No payment protocol (0). Plan prices from $5 a month, top-up prices and the credit value of about $0.059 are public without a login (20). Free Mode and the free trial ended on 29 October 2026, so there is no free tier (0). A person signs up in a browser (0). 0+20+0+0 = 20.

### Agent ergonomics: Prime Agent +38

- Prime Agent (73): Harness reading, scored on what a person or pipeline driving it has to supply. The model sees three tools (bash, edit, ipython), and MCP tools are searched, described and called from Python instead of being loaded into the prompt (23). Autonomous mode has limits for turns, tokens, time and continuations, a goal token budget and automatic compaction (17). A JSON event stream and exit codes for headless runs, described in the crate README and source only (10). Sessions resume, the daemon restarts workers and restores from JSONL files, refinements can be rolled back and quality gates retry (15). One command starts it and no SDK was found. A provider must be chosen through an interactive `/login` or supplied as a key first (8).
- Verdent (35): Harness reading. MCP servers per project or globally, subagents, skills and rules, but no per-tool disabling or deferred loading found (10). No output-size, turn-limit or budget controls for a run were found beyond credit balances (5). No exit codes or error format, since there is no headless mode (3). Parallel workers in git worktrees and a review column make runs reviewable and reversible, with no resume by ID documented (10). No CLI, API or SDK. A pipeline can only reach Manager through a paired Telegram, Slack or Feishu bot (7). 10+5+3+10+7 = 35.

### Maintenance & community: Prime Agent +18

- Prime Agent (79): Stable v0.10.2 on 28 October 2026, six days before this check (30). 20 stable tags from v0.6.1 (5 August) to v0.10.2 in the 90 days from 5 August, beside more than 140 nightly beta tags since 30 September that a default install doesn't get (20). About 800 commits on main since 5 August. Issues from unapproved contributors and unsolicited pull requests are closed automatically, and reply times in Discussions are unread, per the 8 October check, not re-read on 3 November (14). Binaries for five targets from one release workflow and Homebrew definitions in the repository. No SDK and no registry package found (8). A pinned toolchain, a committed lockfile and cargo-deny with two triaged advisory exceptions reviewed on 17 September 2026. CI passing per the 8 October check (not re-read), and the npm audit findings in issue #3292 not verified (7). 30 + 20 + 14 + 8 + 7 = 79.
- Verdent (61): Closed service. v2.18.0 on 29 October 2026, eight days before this check (30). More than three dated releases in the 90 days from 8 August, among them 2.10.0 to 2.18.0 (20). A dated public changelog, a support address, Discord and a subreddit, with no public tracker to read reply times (8). No official SDK or MCP server to keep current (0). No public packages or CI to judge (3). 30+20+8+0+3 = 61.

### Security & auth: Prime Agent +17

- Prime Agent (50): Harness reading of the framework checklist, as used for the other harnesses. 30 for what leaves the machine by default, 20 for approvals and sandboxing, 15 for prompt-injection posture, 15 for audit and 20 for the security programme. Usage telemetry is on by default. It is pseudonymous, limited to primitive values with no prompts, tool content or file paths per the source, disclosed on first run and mirrored to a local `telemetry.jsonl` (18). No approval prompts were found and there is no sandbox, which the README states. MCP tools can be limited with `enabledTools` and `disabledTools`, and the agent is told to recommend a connection, not make one (4). The README tells users to work only with trusted repositories, instructions and skills. No detection or mitigation found (5). Append-only JSONL session files, a `prime-agent incident` timeline command and the local telemetry mirror (12). The vendor's security policy has a reporting address, safe harbour, response times and discretionary rewards, scoped to its website and API. The repository has no SECURITY.md and no published advisories, CONTRIBUTING.md says to report privately without naming an address, and security.txt returned 404. security.txt still returned 404 on 3 November 2026 and the policy page (updated 6 May 2026) is unchanged. Fixes to the agent's own flaws ship in releases with no advisory (see negative). cargo-deny runs in CI (11). 18 + 4 + 5 + 12 + 11 = 50.
- Verdent (33): Framework reading (telemetry defaults, approvals, guardrails, sandboxing). Conversation history and tool results go to Verdent's US servers and on to Azure, Bedrock or Vertex, with zero data retention stated for Vertex and Bedrock only. Event logging to log.verdent.ai has no documented opt-out. BYOA keys stay on the machine (10). Plan Mode is read-only, Agent Mode asks before destructive commands and edits outside scope, and workers are isolated by git worktree, but there is no sandbox or network control and the approval list isn't enumerated (9). No prompt-injection guidance found, while web search and fetch results enter the context (2). Usage history in the dashboard, no audit log found (5). A security page with a disclosure address and a five-day acknowledgement, SOC 2 and ISO/IEC 42001 being pursued rather than held, no security.txt and no bug bounty (7). 10+9+2+5+7 = 33.

### Reliability: Prime Agent +15

- Prime Agent (58): Read with the local-software lines. The installer's stable channel now points at v0.10.2 (28 October 2026), the Rust build, with checksummed binaries for macOS and Linux on x64 and arm64 and for Windows x64, read from the channel manifest on 3 November 2026 (20). A public CI workflow runs fmt, clippy with warnings as errors, sharded workspace tests and cargo-deny on main. Its badge read passing on 8 October, but GitHub's pages answered 403 on 3 November, so the current pass state is unread (15). 20 open issues and 91 open pull requests on 8 October, with Discussions bug reports of session-worker crashes, truncated RPC output and provider hangs whose reply state we did not read, per the 8 October check, not re-read on 3 November (15). A dated CHANGELOG.md now covers 0.10.1 (21 October) and 0.10.2 (28 October), and 0.10.1 records the removal of the `--tools` flags, but no entry is marked breaking, 0.10.0 (9 October) has no entry and the project is at 0.x (8). Version 0.10.2, pre-1.0 (0). 20 + 15 + 15 + 8 + 0 = 58.
- Verdent (43): Local-package reading, as for the other closed-source harnesses. The desktop app installs from verdent.ai with macOS 11 or later and 64-bit Windows 10 and 11 stated, and the extension from the editor marketplaces, but not from a package registry (15). No public CI or test suite, since the source isn't published (0). No public issue tracker, every task runs through Verdent's servers, and no status page was found, so there is no readable record (5). A dated changelog by version, with the end of Free Mode called out in v2.18.0, but no breaking-change sections (8). 2.18.0, generally available (15). 15+0+5+8+15 = 43.

### Transparency & trust: Prime Agent +12

- Prime Agent (67): MIT in the LICENSE file and Cargo.toml, with a notice that the code is a port of a TypeScript product originally copyright Mario Zechner (30). The first-run notice and the telemetry crate README say what is sent and what is excluded, and name the endpoint and PostHog, but the vendor privacy policy, re-read on 3 November 2026, is still dated 23 February 2024, does not describe agent telemetry and gives no retention period for it (12). No deprecation policy found. Removed flags are recorded in change fragments and, since 0.10.1, in CHANGELOG.md (5). Telemetry is disclosed with a setting, a command and two environment variables to turn it off (20). 30 + 12 + 5 + 20 = 67.
- Verdent (55): Proprietary, under terms from Verdent AI, Inc. that are clear on use and ownership (15). The privacy policy and security page agree that data stays in the US and that input isn't trained on without consent, and the security page lists subprocessors. The privacy policy gives no retention periods, names MiniMax as a provider the security list leaves out, and deletion is by email request (14). The credit bonus carries a promise of 15 days' notice, but Free Mode was retired on the day v2.18.0 shipped and no deprecation policy was found (6). Subprocessors and their locations are listed, and the domains the app calls are named, with event logging undescribed (12). 15+14+6+12 = 47.

## Score by category

| Category | Weight | Prime Agent | Verdent | Edge |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Reliability | 16% (20 this run) | 58 | 43 | Prime Agent +15 |
| Performance | 10%, pending | pending | pending | not scored in this run |
| Schema & documentation | 13% (16.2 this run) | 45 | 55 | Verdent +10 |
| Agent ergonomics | 13% (16.2 this run) | 73 | 35 | Prime Agent +38 |
| Security & auth | 14% (17.5 this run) | 50 | 33 | Prime Agent +17 |
| Payments & pricing | 10% (12.5 this run) | 60 | 20 | Prime Agent +40 |
| Task success | 10%, pending | pending | pending | not scored in this run |
| Maintenance & community | 7% (8.8 this run) | 79 | 61 | Prime Agent +18 |
| Transparency & trust | 7% (8.8 this run) | 67 | 55 | Prime Agent +12 |
| Negative events | ≤15 | -3 | -2 | |
| **Total** | | **56.8 · C** | **39.7 · E** | |

## Facts side by side

| Fact | Prime Agent | Verdent |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Kind | Agent harness | Agent harness |
| Vendor | Prime Intellect | Verdent AI, Inc. |
| Hosted endpoint | no (local only) | no (local only) |
| Transports | | |
| Auth | None | OAuth or key |
| Pricing | Free | Paid |
| x402 | no | no |
| Licence | MIT | Proprietary. Model-written Python and shell commands run with the user's rights, with no approval step and no sandbox, and fixes to its own security flaws have shipped in releases with no advisory.

**Verdent.** A desktop and editor coding agent that splits a goal into parallel workers in git worktrees, with a read-only Plan Mode, MCP servers and the option to run workers on Claude Code or Codex. It has no CLI, API or sandbox, sends context through Verdent's servers, and has had no free tier since 29 October 2026.

## Before you call either

### Prime Agent

1. Run it in a disposable clone, container or VM. It executes model-written Python and shell commands with the user's rights and asks nothing first
2. Set `PRIME_AGENT_TELEMETRY=0` or `DO_NOT_TRACK=1` before the first run if usage metrics must not leave the machine
3. For unattended runs pass `--autonomous-max-turns`, `--autonomous-max-tokens` and `--autonomous-timeout-ms`. Reaching a limit does not mean the task succeeded
4. Headless use is `-p` with `--mode json` per the argument parser. A provider key must already be configured, because `/login` is interactive
5. The `-t/--tools`, `-nt/--no-tools` and `-nbt/--no-builtin-tools` flags were removed and now fail as unknown options

### Verdent

1. Don't plan to drive Verdent headless. Hand the task to the person using the desktop app, or use a harness with a print mode
2. Start large changes in Plan Mode and review plan.md before switching to Agent Mode
3. Add MCP servers in the project's .mcp.json or ~/.verdent/mcp.json in the mcpServers shape
4. Keep work under git, since rollback relies on git and there is no sandbox
5. Budget in credits at about $0.059 each, because there is no free allowance since 29 October 2026

## Questions

### Which is better for AI agents, Prime Agent or Verdent?

Prime Agent scores 56.8 (C) on agent readiness against Verdent's 39.7 (E), and leads in 6 of 7 scored categories. Verdent leads on schema & documentation.

### Are Prime Agent and Verdent open source?

Prime Agent is open source (MIT). No open-source release is listed for Verdent.

## For agents

- This comparison as JSON: https://www.anchorterminal.com/compare/prime-agent-vs-verdent.json, and with the fewest tokens: https://www.anchorterminal.com/compare/prime-agent-vs-verdent.min.md
- Over MCP at https://www.anchorterminal.com/mcp (no key): `compare_tools {"a": "prime-agent", "b": "verdent"}`.
