Ahead on: - Reliability, 72 against 53 - Schema & documentation, 90 against 72 - Agent ergonomics, 72 against 61 - Payments & pricing, 60 against 40 - Maintenance & community, 87 against 58 - Transparency & trust, 81 against 56 Also in its favour: - No key needed to call it - Open source Watch for: No tool-approval or confirmation step, and no prompt-injection guidance, for tools that act on a caller's speech ### Pipecat PhoneLLM (C) Good for: The language model in a cascaded voice pipeline (speech-to-text, LLM, text-to-speech), especially Pipecat with Flows, where low time to first token and tool calls matter more than broad knowledge. Ahead on: - Security & auth, 66 against 57 Also in its favour: - A hosted endpoint, with nothing to install - No incidents deducted, where Pipecat loses 4 points for them Watch for: Labelled Alpha 2 by Daily, with no deprecation policy, support period or changelog of its own ## Score by category | Category | Weight | Pipecat | Pipecat PhoneLLM | Edge | | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | | Reliability | 16% (20 this run) | 72 | 53 | Pipecat +19 | | Performance | 10%, pending | pending | pending | not scored in this run | | Schema & documentation | 13% (16.2 this run) | 90 | 72 | Pipecat +18 | | Agent ergonomics | 13% (16.2 this run) | 72 | 61 | Pipecat +11 | | Security & auth | 14% (17.5 this run) | 57 | 66 | Pipecat PhoneLLM +9 | | Payments & pricing | 10% (12.5 this run) | 60 | 40 | Pipecat +20 | | Task success | 10%, pending | pending | pending | not scored in this run | | Maintenance & community | 7% (8.8 this run) | 87 | 58 | Pipecat +29 | | Transparency & trust | 7% (8.8 this run) | 81 | 56 | Pipecat +25 | | Negative events | ≤15 | -4 | 0 | | | **Total** | | **68.9 · B** | **58.7 · C** | | ## Facts side by side | Fact | Pipecat | Pipecat PhoneLLM | | --- | --- | --- | | Kind | Agent framework | Model API | | Vendor | Daily | Daily | | Hosted endpoint | no (local only) | `https://api.cloudflare.com/client/v4/accounts/{account_id}/ai/run/@cf/daily-co/phonellm-mini-alpha-2` | | Transports | | HTTP | | Auth | None | API key | | Pricing | Free | Freemium | | x402 | no | no | | Licence | BSD-2-Clause for the framework. It has no tool-approval step, and 1.12.0 can send OPENAI_API_KEY to other OpenAI-compatible providers when no key is passed, a flaw fixed on main but not yet released. **Pipecat PhoneLLM.** PhoneLLM Mini is callable per token on Workers AI at $0.06 input and $0.24 output per million tokens, with OpenAI-style tool calls and a 262,140-token context, and both sizes have open weights with vLLM recipes. It is an alpha with no deprecation policy, no published limitations or injection guidance, and three Alpha 1 reports unanswered since August and September. ## Before you call either ### Pipecat 1. Pass `api_key` explicitly to every OpenAI-compatible service such as Groq, Cerebras or OpenRouter. On 1.12.0 a missing key sends `OPENAI_API_KEY` to that provider 2. Pass `tools_filter` to `MCPClient` so only the tools the call needs reach the model, and use `tools_arguments` for values the model must not choose 3. Gate tools that book, pay or send in your own handler. Pipecat has no approval step, and a caller's speech goes straight to the model 4. Keep the development runner on localhost. Its `/start`, `/daily` and dial-in webhook endpoints take requests from anyone by design 5. Pin a minor version and read the breaking-change flags in CHANGELOG.md before upgrading, since minor releases remove and rename APIs ### Pipecat PhoneLLM 1. Send `temperature: 0` on every call. The repositories' generation_config.json samples by default, and Max's sets temperature 1.0 2. For Max, serve with `--reasoning-parser nemotron_v3` and send `chat_template_kwargs` with `enable_thinking: true` on every request, or the reply lands in `reasoning` 3. For Mini, serve without a reasoning parser and keep `enable_thinking` false, as Cloudflare and the card say, or tool calls can be filed under `reasoning` 4. Confirm bookings, payments and transfers in your own handler before acting on a tool call, since caller speech reaches the model directly 5. Pin the model ID including `alpha-2`. Daily states no notice period, and a later alpha may replace it ## Questions ### Which is better for AI agents, Pipecat or Pipecat PhoneLLM?
