The `ai_overview` parameter and field, the `/v1/ai-mode` endpoint and its MCP tool, and the `/v1/lens` endpoint were removed the day each removal was announced (2 and 3 October), three to four days after the v1.0.0 changelog listed AI Overview as unchanged, with Google's refusal of logged-out requests as the reason. Later same-day changes fold into this term, among them `/v1/reviews` answering 400 for sorts other than `most_relevant` and stopping at review 10 (16 October), and `page: 2` and later answering 503 instead of an empty result (1 November). AI Overview and AI Mode came back on 28 October. Folded into one small deduction, -3 (https://serpkite.com/docs/changelog)."

Every status is documented with whether to retry; the agent returns stable `code` values, while the News API body has a `status_code` and a message meant for people (17 of 20). Every tool carries readOnlyHint and idempotentHint, writes carry destructiveHint, `start_research` has a free `dry_run`, and refused or failed calls aren't charged. No idempotency key for starting runs (17 of 20). Only `q` is required, with medium effort and a 7-day window as defaults. Stable error codes with a retry column, and errors are never billed (20). Searches are read-only, failed and empty calls are refunded, and batch creation takes `Idempotency-Key`. Since 9 October 2026 the changelog says every MCP tool carries `readOnlyHint`, `destructiveHint`, `idempotentHint` and `openWorldHint`, with all read-only except `crawl`, and on 2 November the MCP page says every tool is read-only except `crawl` and `research`, which start paid tasks, and none is destructive (20). The agent and the MCP server have no component of their own (20). In the 90 days from 8 August, one incident, on 1 September 2026, when the vendor wrote that for about four hours a higher-than-usual number of requests to the production News API timed out because of one client's queries. Read as one major (10). Rate limits published per plan, 1 request a second free and up to 10 on pay as you go, with exact limits from the free `GET /subscription` (15). 429 carries Retry-After with instructions to retry the same request, 503 carries Retry-After, and failed or refused requests are not charged. Agent runs and monitor creation have no idempotency keys (12 of 15). An uptime SLA exists only in signed Enterprise agreements; none is published (0). The page's own figures give 99.978 per cent uptime over 30 days for the API health monitor and 99.971 for the dashboard API, the 5 October check saw 29 to 41 minutes of downtime on each monitor on 2 October and 19 seconds on 3 October, and the feed has never carried an incident post. No outage reached an hour. A readable record shorter than 90 days with nothing major scores 15, as this run settled for short records. A 403 for 'a key that may not use this API' suggests per-key API access, but no scopes are documented (20). The MCP server documents `?apiKey=` on the server URL for Claude.ai custom connectors, with a warning, so less 10 (10 of 30). The MCP repository's SECURITY.md says URL keys are rejected unless the operator enables them, which the hosted server does per the docs. The docs allow the key as `?api_key=` on GET requests (minus 10). Search is read-only, and per-key limits and an account spend cap bound cost, but there's no read-only key, and the MCP server exposes crawl alongside search with no confirmation step we could see (10). Results include third-party snippets and full page Markdown, and we found no prompt-injection guidance (0). No official SDK for the current API was found; the docs show raw HTTP in three languages (8 of 15). 22 + 20 + 17 + 17 + 8 = 84.\n- SerpKite (97): `format=markdown` or `compact`, `fields` projection, `num` and an `X-Tokens-Estimate` header size REST responses. The MCP server now has 23 tools with no toolsets or read-only subset we could find (22). `page`, `num` up to 100, country, language, location, time, domain include, exclude and boost, date bounds, `highlights` and `max_tokens` on extract (20). Only `q` or `url` is required, and official SDKs exist for TypeScript, Python and Go with retries built in (15). 22+20+20+20+15 = 97.\n\n### Payments \u0026 pricing: SerpKite +10\n\n- NewsCatcher (30): No x402, MPP or L402 (0). Credit prices per call published without login, and credits cost $1 per 1,000 through top-ups from $25 (20). 10,000 free credits every 30 days on a $0 plan, and the first top-up moves an account to pay as you go. No page says whether a card is needed to open the free plan, so half (10). A person signs up in the platform in a browser to get a key (0). NewsMCP's keyless tier belongs to a separate product and isn't counted. 0 + 20 + 10 + 0 = 30.\n- SerpKite (40): No x402, MPP or L402 in llms.txt, the OpenAPI spec or the pricing page (0). Per-pack and per-credit prices published without a login, $1.00 to $0.60 per 1,000 (20). Free credits on signup and 1,000 a month with no card, per the quickstart and home page (20). A person signs in by email, GitHub or Google in a browser (0).\n\n### Reliability: SerpKite +8\n\n- NewsCatcher (67): Read with the hosted lines, for the News API, the agent and the hosted MCP server. status.newscatcherapi.com (Hyperping) shows one News API component with 99.820% uptime from August to November 2026 and an incident history. Generally available since 30 October 2026, with OAuth for the MCP server announced as coming soon (10). 20 + 10 + 15 + 12 + 0 + 10 = 67.\n- SerpKite (75): Hosted API, read with the hosted lines. Better Stack status page at status.serpkite.com with four monitors (api.serpkite.com/healthz, dashboard API, dashboard, website) and daily bars (20). Monitoring began on 2 October 2026, so the record covers 31 days of the 90 from 4 August. Rate limits published per key, 5 to 100 requests a second by pack (15). 429 `rate_limited` with Retry-After, backoff guidance for 429 and 503, and `Idempotency-Key` on batch creation (15). The terms say self-serve plans have no uptime guarantee and an enterprise SLA sits in a separate agreement we couldn't read (0). v1 API with no beta or preview label (10). 20+15+15+15+0+10 = 75.\n\n### Security \u0026 auth: NewsCatcher +8\n\n- NewsCatcher (45): API keys in the `x-api-key` header, several per account, revocable in the platform, with advice to keep one per application. Toolsets let an operator load only the read-only `news` tools, write tools carry destructiveHint, and the server tells the assistant to confirm large or hourly agent jobs (14 of 20). Results are third-party article text and summaries, and no prompt-injection guidance was found in the docs or the MCP server's instructions (0 of 15). Every response carries a Correlation-ID, `GET /subscription` shows usage and balance, and runs are listed in the platform. No per-call audit log for the customer was found (7 of 15). The security page and footer claim SOC 2 Type II and link a trust centre on Oneleet, which wasn't read. A vulnerability disclosure policy covers the MCP server. No security.txt (404) and no bug bounty found (14 of 20). 10 + 14 + 0 + 7 + 14 = 45.\n- SerpKite (37): Many keys per account, each revocable and rotatable with an optional monthly credit limit, stored as SHA-256 hashes, with no scopes. Since 9 October the MCP server also takes OAuth (authorisation code with PKCE, dynamic client registration, rotating refresh tokens, one `mcp` scope), each connection running as a named, revocable API key, while REST still needs a key (20). The dashboard request log keeps per-call metadata (endpoint, status, credits, key) for 31 days with CSV export, and each key records who created it (12). security.txt returns 404. The security page has a disclosure policy with acknowledgement in 2 business days, no paid bug bounty and SOC 2 marked as not yet started (5).\n\n## Score by category\n\n| Category | Weight | NewsCatcher | SerpKite | Edge |\n| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |\n| Reliability | 16% (20 this run) | 67 | 75 | SerpKite +8 |\n| Performance | 10%, pending | pending | pending | not scored in this run |\n| Schema \u0026 documentation | 13% (16.2 this run) | 94 | 90 | NewsCatcher +4 |\n| Agent ergonomics | 13% (16.2 this run) | 84 | 97 | SerpKite +13 |\n| Security \u0026 auth | 14% (17.5 this run) | 45 | 37 | NewsCatcher +8 |\n| Payments \u0026 pricing | 10% (12.5 this run) | 30 | 40 | SerpKite +10 |\n| Task success | 10%, pending | pending | pending | not scored in this run |\n| Maintenance \u0026 community | 7% (8.8 this run) | 76 | 80 | SerpKite +4 |\n| Transparency \u0026 trust | 7% (8.8 this run) | 79 | 77 | NewsCatcher +2 |\n| Negative events | ≤15 | 0 | -3 | |\n| **Total** | | **67.5 · B** | **67.6 · B** | |\n\n## Facts side by side\n\n| Fact | NewsCatcher | SerpKite |\n| --- | --- | --- |\n| Kind | HTTP API | HTTP API |\n| Vendor | NewsCatcher, Inc. | SerpKite (Anastasia Klimova, trading as SerpKite) |\n| Hosted endpoint | `https://mcp.newscatcherapi.com/mcp` | `https://api.serpkite.com/v1/search` |\n| Transports | Streamable HTTP | HTTP, Streamable HTTP |\n| Auth | API key | API key |\n| Pricing | Pay per use | Freemium |\n| Price for search news | $1 per 1,000 requests | not published |\n| x402 | no | no |\n| Licence | none | Proprietary service under SerpKite's terms of service. The current API launched on 30 October 2026, the MCP server accepts the key in its URL, and no SLA is published below Enterprise.\n\n**SerpKite.** Google SERP API with an OpenAPI 3.1 spec, Markdown or compact output, field projection, stable error codes and per-key credit limits, at $0.60 to $1.00 per 1,000 on packs that don't expire. The service launched on 29 September 2026 from a sole trader, with a month of status history and frequent same-day contract changes.\n\n## Before you call either\n\n### NewsCatcher\n\n1. Send the key in the `x-api-key` header, and use a separate key for the MCP server so it can be revoked alone\n2. Call `start_research` with `dry_run` first, since agent runs cost 1,000 to 6,000 credits\n3. Use `effort=low` for quick lookups; the default `medium` costs five times as much\n4. Use `/articles` or `list_articles` for news older than 30 days or exact counts; `/search` covers 30 days only\n5. On 429 or 503 wait for Retry-After, and quote the Correlation-ID header to support\n\n### SerpKite\n\n1. Send the key as `Authorization: Bearer`, not `?api_key=`, and give the agent a dedicated key with a monthly credit limit\n2. Ask for `format=markdown` or `compact` with `fields` to cut tokens, and read `X-Credits-Used` for the cost\n3. Keep `engine=google` for rank work. Check `meta.engine` when a key allows fallback engines\n4. On 429 `rate_limited` or 503 upstream codes, wait for Retry-After and retry. `daily_limit_reached`, `account_restricted` (403) and 402 need a purchase\n5. Treat page Markdown from `include_content`, `webpage` and `extract` as untrusted text\n\n## Questions\n\n### Which is better for AI agents, NewsCatcher or SerpKite?\n\nSerpKite and NewsCatcher score within a point of each other on agent readiness, 67.6 (B) and 67.5 (B). NewsCatcher leads on security \u0026 auth.\n\n### Do NewsCatcher and SerpKite need an API key?\n\nBoth need an API key.\n\n### Can an agent call NewsCatcher and SerpKite without installing anything?\n\nYes.
