Ahead on: - Reliability, 52 against 35 - Agent ergonomics, 55 against 47 Watch for: API keys carry no scopes or expiry in the reviewed documentation, and the same key can call `DELETE /v2/users/me` ### Runpod (D) Good for: Cost-sensitive inference and batch work that wants the widest GPU choice, from consumer cards to B300, with an MCP control plane. Ahead on: - Security & auth, 60 against 47 - Payments & pricing, 20 against 15 - Maintenance & community, 82 against 42 Also in its favour: - Runs on your own machine - No incidents deducted, where Hyperbolic loses 3 points for them Watch for: Data-centre outages of 6 to 24 hours in each of July, August and September 2026 ## Score by category | Category | Weight | Hyperbolic | Runpod | Edge | | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | | Reliability | 16% (20 this run) | 52 | 35 | Hyperbolic +17 | | Performance | 10%, pending | pending | pending | not scored in this run | | Schema & documentation | 13% (16.2 this run) | 77 | 81 | Runpod +4 | | Agent ergonomics | 13% (16.2 this run) | 55 | 47 | Hyperbolic +8 | | Security & auth | 14% (17.5 this run) | 47 | 60 | Runpod +13 | | Payments & pricing | 10% (12.5 this run) | 15 | 20 | Runpod +5 | | Task success | 10%, pending | pending | pending | not scored in this run | | Maintenance & community | 7% (8.8 this run) | 42 | 82 | Runpod +40 | | Transparency & trust | 7% (8.8 this run) | 61 | 63 | Runpod +2 | | Negative events | ≤15 | -3 | 0 | | | **Total** | | **48 · D** | **53.5 · D** | | ## Facts side by side | Fact | Hyperbolic | Runpod | | --- | --- | --- | | Kind | HTTP API | HTTP API | | Vendor | Hyperbolic Labs, Inc. | Runpod | | Hosted endpoint | `https://api.hyperbolic.ai` | `https://api.runpod.ai/v2` | | Transports | HTTP | HTTP, Streamable HTTP, stdio | | Auth | API key | OAuth or key | | Pricing | Pay per use | Pay per use | | x402 | no | no | | Licence | Proprietary service under Hyperbolic's Terms of Service. API keys carry no scopes and can delete the account, rental creation has no idempotency key, and renting needs a browser signup and a $5 deposit. **Runpod.** Per-second billing across more than a dozen serverless GPU classes, H100 at $4.79 and A100 80 GB at $2.72 an hour. Data-centre outages of 6 to 24 hours in each of July, August and September 2026. ## Before you call either ### Hyperbolic 1. Read `GET /v2/on-demand/rental-options` first. It needs no key and lists what can be rented now, with `costPerHourCents` per GPU configuration. 2. Send `rentalType` and `gpuCount` to `POST /v2/on-demand/rentals`. Region defaults to `us-central-1` and GPU type to `h100`, so set both from the options list. 3. List active rentals before retrying a failed create call. There is no idempotency key and every ready rental bills hourly. 4. Save an SSH public key with `POST /v2/ssh-keys` before renting. Without `sshPublicKeyIds` the newest saved key is attached. 5. Do not create reserved rentals unless asked. They are paid in full up front and cannot be terminated early. ### Runpod 1. Create a Restricted or Read Only key per endpoint for the agent, not an All key 2. Use REST v2 at api.runpod.io/v2 with a Bearer header; avoid GraphQL, which puts the key in the URL 3. Fetch `/run` results within 30 minutes and `/runsync` results within 1 minute, or they're gone 4. Call `/retry` on a failed job ID rather than submitting a duplicate job 5. Check `/health` before relying on an endpoint idle for a week, since max workers drop to 0 ## Questions ### Which is better for AI agents, Hyperbolic or Runpod?
