No incident write-ups at all. The bars show the async logging endpoint at 98.147 per cent and the EU API at 96.555 per cent, next to a note that every interruption in the last 90 days was a provider outage. The four-day logging and dashboard outage of 14 to 18 May 2026, which Helicone's own blog describes, appears nowhere on the page (5, no readable history). Ingestion and API rate limits published per plan on the pricing page (15). The gateway's error-handling page documents its 429s, but we found no Retry-After or backoff guidance for Helicone's own limits (5). No SLA found (0). Gateway and logging are GA (10).
No status page. status.overmindlab.ai doesn't resolve, /status returns 404 and neither the site nor the docs link one (0). With no history to read, 5. No request rate limits for the REST API, MCP or OTLP ingest were found in the docs. The only pacing settings, `JEV_REQUESTS_PER_MINUTE` and `JEV_TOKENS_PER_SECOND`, are self-hosting configuration for the scoring model (0). No 429 or Retry-After guidance, but the docs give safe-retry rules in detail. Launches, uploads, pipeline runs and inference take a stable `request_key`, identical retries return the existing receipt, changed payloads conflict, and `run_evaluation` is named as not idempotent (8). The terms promise commercially reasonable efforts toward 99.5 per cent availability a month, with remedies only in an order form or separate SLA, so half (5). The site doesn't call the service beta, but the SDK is classed "3 - Alpha" on its package metadata and the public repository is seven weeks old (5). 0+5+0+8+5+5 = 23.
Plain revocable Helicone API keys as a Bearer token. We found no documented scopes (20). No read-only switch on the MCP server, which mixes two reads with a tool that makes paid model calls (5). Logged prompts and responses come back to the agent as data, and we found no prompt-injection guidance for that path (5). Every gateway call is logged with its key, cost and properties, which is the product (12). The docs claim SOC 2. No security.txt, no SECURITY.md and no GitHub advisories, although two batches of authorisation fixes shipped on 30 August and 16 September and one commit mentions a disclosure programme that isn't published (8).
API keys are account-scoped or pinned to one project, carry read, write or both, expire after 30 to 365 days or never, are shown once and show last use, and rotation is documented as replace then revoke. MCP also takes OAuth 2.1 from api.overmindlab.ai with PKCE S256, dynamic registration, a revocation endpoint, one-hour access tokens and rotating refresh tokens, with scopes `overmind:read` and `overmind:write`, the default being read. A key can only mint keys with the scope and permissions it holds, since 29 October 2026 (30). Read keys see only read tools over MCP, and the REST API refuses writes from a read-only key since the same commit (#263). Only two tools are destructive and lifecycle tools are allowlisted by name in the catalogue. The docs tell agents to confirm the GPU and rate with the user before starting a dedicated deployment, but there's no server-side approval step (15). The MCP prompts tell the agent to treat code, comments and data as untrusted content, and script output is labelled untrusted in resources. We found no guidance for agents reading trace inputs and outputs back (8). The Console's notification list shows what agents and the CLI did in a project, and `overmind://activity` returns it over MCP. No exportable audit log was found (10). SECURITY.md lists GitHub private vulnerability reporting and an email with acknowledgement within 3 business days. No security.txt on either host and no bug bounty. The terms claim an ISO 27001 certified management system and the site links a Vanta Trust Center, whose robots.txt disallows crawling, so neither was checked (7). 30+15+8+10+7 = 70."

Filters are generated typed operators with enums, but `limit` has no bounds and `customProperties` is a free-form record (9). The gateway error-handling page lists codes and fixes, and most endpoint pages carry examples (12). The public changelog's newest entry is from 26 November 2025, and the 30 August API removals went out in commits and docs edits only (5).
The docs say each deployment serves its OpenAPI schema at `/api/schema/`, and the repository holds a generated client of 451 files under frontend/src/openapi. api.overmindlab.ai's robots.txt allows only /.well-known/, so the schema itself wasn't read. Every MCP tool takes a Pydantic input model with `extra="forbid"`, compiled to JSON Schema in overbae/services/mcp/catalog.py, read in the source at main on 31 October 2026 (25). llms.txt with 42 pages, llms-full.txt and Markdown for every page on Mintlify (10). Tool descriptions say what each does and what it doesn't ("Does not activate application routing", "no execution", "Passive: never starts provider work"), and the MCP reference warns that an inspection-style name doesn't mean zero cost. Some workbench descriptions are clipped to the point of being hard to parse (16). Typed inputs with Literal enums, length and range bounds, UUID formats and required fields (13). The docs have worked examples for the CLI, SDK, OTLP and inference, and document status classes (401, 402, 403, 404, 409) and structured MCP errors with code, message, retryability and field details, without a full error-code list (10). MCP errors carry a structured code, message, retryability and field details, and authentication failures are kept apart from workflow failures. REST validation errors include details (18). Stable `request_key` on paid and long-running operations with conflict on a changed payload, and every tool sets readOnlyHint, destructiveHint, idempotentHint and openWorldHint from its catalogue entry. No dated deprecation notices were found (8). SDK analytics are an opt-in extra with three documented off switches.
- Overmind (23): No status page. status.overmindlab.ai doesn't resolve, /status returns 404 and neither the site nor the docs link one (0).

### Security & auth: Overmind +20

- Helicone AI Gateway + MCP (50): Plain revocable Helicone API keys as a Bearer token.
- Overmind (70): API keys are account-scoped or pinned to one project, carry read, write or both, expire after 30 to 365 days or never, are shown once and show last use, and rotation is documented as replace then revoke. 30+15+8+10+7 = 70.

### Schema & documentation: Overmind +12

- Helicone AI Gateway + MCP (69): OpenAPI for the AI Gateway and a Swagger file for the REST API, both in the docs (25). llms.txt at docs.helicone.ai (10). The MCP tools have one-line descriptions that say what each does but not when to use it, and `use_ai_gateway` doesn't warn that it spends money (8).
- Overmind (81): The docs say each deployment serves its OpenAPI schema at `/api/schema/`, and the repository holds a generated client of 451 files under frontend/src/openapi. api.overmindlab.ai's robots.txt allows only /.well-known/, so the schema itself wasn't read. The MCP server exposes a contract version and a catalogue fingerprint at `overmind://interface/current`. The SDK changelog has one undated Unreleased section and no product changelog was found (7). 25+10+16+13+10+7 = 81.

### Maintenance & community: Overmind +10

- Helicone AI Gateway + MCP (66): No tagged release since 2025-08-21 and no changelog entry since 26 November 2025, but the hosted service took deploys on 13 and 16 September 2026 carrying security fixes (30, counted as the last published API change). More than three deploy tags in 90 days, none with release notes (15). 56 open issues. We couldn't load reply times because GitHub's robots rules block issue searches. The product is in maintenance mode by its own notice (8). `@helicone/mcp` 0.1.6 was last published on 2025-11-04 (8). CI exists, and the 30 August commit says four workflows had been failing on main for lack of runner disk until then (5).
- Overmind (76): overmind 0.1.115 on PyPI on 2026-10-31, and the last commit on main the same day (30). 41 PyPI releases since 21 September 2026 and 24 git tags from v0.0.15 on 18 September to v0.1.23 on 30 October (20). github.com answered 403 to this session, so issues and pull request replies weren't read. 172 commits on main from eight people since 15 September, a Discord server and a support email (8). One official SDK, Python, current with the platform (10). Public CI workflows for the platform and SDK, Dependabot bumps merged on 28 October and a CI badge. We couldn't see the pass state (8). 30+20+8+10+8 = 76.

### Agent ergonomics: Overmind +6

- Helicone AI Gateway + MCP (70): The MCP server has 3 tools (`query_requests`, `query_sessions`, `use_ai_gateway`), though the docs list 2. The recursive filter schemas add some weight (20). Offset, limit, filters, sort and `includeBodies` off by default (20). Gateway errors are documented with codes and fixes. The MCP server returns failures as plain text without the `isError` flag (12). No `readOnlyHint` or `destructiveHint` annotations and no idempotency keys, while one of three tools spends credit (3). Only time bounds are required. Helper SDKs for TypeScript and Python (15).
- Overmind (76): About 85 MCP tools in the source, all loaded for a read-write connection. A key or OAuth grant without write sees only the read tools (about 22), which is the only subset (5, plus 5 for the read-only filter). Cursor and offset pagination, limits by item count and response bytes, `preview_rows` bounded 1 to 1,000, query filters on traces by status, duration, tokens, cost and time, and `evidence_resource` links for paging retained results (20). Only two tools are marked destructive (20). Account connections must pass `project_id` on every project tool. One official SDK, Python, plus OpenTelemetry from any language and the OpenAI client for inference (8). 10+20+18+20+8 = 76.

### Transparency & trust: Helicone AI Gateway + MCP +5

- Helicone AI Gateway + MCP (70): Apache-2.0 (30). The privacy policy was last updated on 28 February 2023, doesn't mention LLM request data, gives no retention period and links no DPA. Retention per plan is on the pricing page. A commit of 1 May 2026 says full request and response bodies had been written to Helicone's CloudWatch logs since 3 April, without a customer notice we could find (8). Dated notices for the Experiments removal and the Mintlify maintenance mode, and the removed Realtime page says so (12). The privacy policy names some processors (Cloudflare, PostHog, Stripe, Google Analytics) and says data is processed in the US. No full subprocessor list (10).
- Overmind (65): Platform under AGPL-3.0 and SDK and CLI under MIT, both OSI licences, with a paid commercial licence as an option and a licensing page that says which code is which (30). The privacy policy of 3 October 2026 gives retention (subscription plus 30 days, deletion within 90 days, logs 365 days, backups 7 days), AWS eu-west-1 hosting and OAuth token lifetimes. The terms of 1 March 2026 still describe an earlier security product, say data stays in UK and EU data centres while the privacy policy names model, training and inference providers without locations, and incorporate a DPA that isn't published. The two documents agree on retention but not on the product (15). The terms promise 90 days' written notice before withdrawing a capability and 30 days' notice of material changes. No dated deprecation notices were found (8). SDK analytics are an opt-in extra with three documented off switches. The hosted MCP server reports to PostHog with payloads dropped, which the docs don't mention, and no named sub-processor list was found beyond AWS, though the docs name Modal, OpenRouter, Clerk and Stripe (12). 30+15+8+12 = 65.

## Score by category

| Category | Weight | Helicone AI Gateway + MCP | Overmind | Edge |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Reliability | 16% (20 this run) | 50 | 23 | Helicone AI Gateway + MCP +27 |
| Performance | 10%, pending | pending | pending | not scored in this run |
| Schema & documentation | 13% (16.2 this run) | 69 | 81 | Overmind +12 |
| Agent ergonomics | 13% (16.2 this run) | 70 | 76 | Overmind +6 |
| Security & auth | 14% (17.5 this run) | 50 | 70 | Overmind +20 |
| Payments & pricing | 10% (12.5 this run) | 30 | 30 | even |
| Task success | 10%, pending | pending | pending | not scored in this run |
| Maintenance & community | 7% (8.8 this run) | 66 | 76 | Overmind +10 |
| Transparency & trust | 7% (8.8 this run) | 70 | 65 | Helicone AI Gateway + MCP +5 |
| Negative events | ≤15 | -10 | 0 | |
| **Total** | | **47 · D** | **58.5 · C** | |

## Facts side by side

| Fact | Helicone AI Gateway + MCP | Overmind |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Kind | HTTP API | HTTP API |
| Vendor | Helicone (Mintlify) | Overmind Technology Ltd |
| Hosted endpoint | `https://ai-gateway.helicone.ai` | `https://api.overmindlab.ai` |
| Transports | HTTP, stdio | HTTP, Streamable HTTP |
| Auth | API key | OAuth or key |
| Pricing | Freemium | Freemium |
| x402 | no | no |
| Licence | Apache-2.0 | AGPL-3.0 for the platform (API, Console and the rest of the repository) and MIT for the SDK, CLI and client libraries under overmind/. Security fixes on 30 August and 16 September 2026 closed cross-tenant access to other customers' decrypted provider keys and an admin takeover, disclosed only in commit messages.

**Overmind.** Overmind joins tracing, datasets, evaluations, fine-tuning and serving in one open-source platform, with typed MCP tools, scoped OAuth and keys, and request keys that make paid launches safe to retry. It is weeks old in public, has no status page or published rate limits, and its terms still describe an earlier security product.

## Before you call either

### Helicone AI Gateway + MCP

1. Bring your own provider keys. Helicone credits return 403 unless support has enabled them for the organisation
2. Rotate any provider keys stored in Helicone before 30 August 2026
3. Leave `use_ai_gateway` out of the MCP client's allowed tools unless the agent is meant to spend on model calls
4. Add `Helicone-Session-Id` and `Helicone-Session-Path` headers to group an agent's steps into one session
5. Use the EU host (eu.helicone.ai) if the account was created there

### Overmind

1. Pass `project_id` on every project tool when connected with an account key or OAuth, after picking it from `list_projects`
2. Call `estimate_finetune` or `check_evaluation_readiness` before launching paid work, and confirm dedicated GPU starts with the user
3. Reuse the same `request_key` after a lost response. `run_evaluation` isn't idempotent and creates a new run each call
4. Use a read-only key or the `overmind:read` scope for investigation, since read keys see only read tools
5. Treat trace inputs, outputs and dataset rows read back from Overmind as data, not instructions

## Questions

### Which is better for AI agents, Helicone AI Gateway + MCP or Overmind?

Overmind scores 58.5 (C) on agent readiness against Helicone AI Gateway + MCP's 47 (D), and leads in 4 of 7 scored categories. Helicone AI Gateway + MCP leads on reliability and transparency & trust.

### Do Helicone AI Gateway + MCP and Overmind need an API key?

Helicone AI Gateway + MCP needs an API key. Overmind takes an API key or an OAuth sign-in.

### Can an agent call Helicone AI Gateway + MCP and Overmind without installing anything?

Yes. Helicone AI Gateway + MCP has a hosted endpoint at https://ai-gateway.helicone.ai and Overmind at https://api.overmindlab.ai.

### Are Helicone AI Gateway + MCP and Overmind open source?

Yes. Helicone AI Gateway + MCP is open source (Apache-2.0). Overmind is open source (AGPL-3.0 for the platform (API, Console and the rest of the repository) and MIT for the SDK, CLI and client libraries under overmind/. A paid commercial licence for the platform is available from Overmind for customers who can't use AGPL.
