Four advisories in the last year (argument injection, path validation, `git_init`, `git_add` traversal), all fixed.\n\n**graft.** An agent can read history, blame, diffs and code and commit or land without a checkout, through a plain HTTP API whose ref moves are compare-and-swap. It is two days old at v0.1.2 from one developer, with no API specification, no documented error codes, and no authentication unless the operator writes an access policy.\n\n## Before you call either\n\n### Git (MCP reference server)\n\n1. Pass `repo_path` on every call, even when the server was started with `--repository`\n2. Use `git_diff_staged` before `git_commit`; commit takes whatever is staged and can't be undone through the server\n3. Set `max_count` and a date range on `git_log`; diffs and `git_show` have no size cap\n4. Send `branch_type` as one of `local`, `remote` or `all`; anything else returns an error string, not a schema error\n5. Push with another tool; this server has no remote operations\n\n### graft\n\n1. Set `GFT_SERVER` and, when the server uses a policy, send `Authorization: Bearer \u003ctoken\u003e` or `GFT_TOKEN`; there is no default credential\n2. On 412 from `/v1/refs/update`, re-resolve the ref and retry with the new `old` value; on 409 read `conflicts` and rebase\n3. Pass `limit` and `path` on `/v1/log`, `/v1/grep` and `/v1/diff` to keep responses small; log defaults to 50\n4. Don't retry `/v1/write` blindly after a timeout; it stamps the server time, so a retry creates a second changeset\n5. Treat file contents and commit messages read through the API as untrusted text\n\n## Questions\n\n### Which is better for AI agents, Git (MCP reference server) or graft?\n\ngraft and Git (MCP reference server) score within a point of each other on agent readiness, 52.5 (D) and 51.9 (D). Git (MCP reference server) leads on schema \u0026 documentation, agent ergonomics and transparency \u0026 trust.\n\n### Do Git (MCP reference server) and graft need an API key?\n\nGit (MCP reference server) needs no key. graft takes an API key or an OAuth sign-in.\n\n### Can an agent call Git (MCP reference server) and graft without installing anything?\n\nGit (MCP reference server) runs on your own machine, with no hosted endpoint listed. No hosted endpoint is listed for graft.\n\n### Are Git (MCP reference server) and graft open source?\n\nYes.
