Watch for: Not shipped on 5 October 2026. Batch 1 is scheduled for 31 October and showed sold out that evening ### LM Studio (C) Good for: A machine that serves open models to several agents and tools at once, in whichever API shape each client already speaks, and for headless serving on Linux with llmster. Ahead on: - Reliability, 34 against 5 - Schema & documentation, 64 against 7 - Agent ergonomics, 69 against 4 - Security & auth, 59 against 6 - Payments & pricing, 60 against 10 - Maintenance & community, 72 against 3 - Transparency & trust, 61 against 45 Also in its favour: - Free to start without a card Watch for: Authentication is off by default, so any local process can call the server ## Score by category | Category | Weight | Core | LM Studio | Edge | | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | | Reliability | 16% (20 this run) | 5 | 34 | LM Studio +29 | | Performance | 10%, pending | pending | pending | not scored in this run | | Schema & documentation | 13% (16.2 this run) | 7 | 64 | LM Studio +57 | | Agent ergonomics | 13% (16.2 this run) | 4 | 69 | LM Studio +65 | | Security & auth | 14% (17.5 this run) | 6 | 59 | LM Studio +53 | | Payments & pricing | 10% (12.5 this run) | 10 | 60 | LM Studio +50 | | Task success | 10%, pending | pending | pending | not scored in this run | | Maintenance & community | 7% (8.8 this run) | 3 | 72 | LM Studio +69 | | Transparency & trust | 7% (8.8 this run) | 45 | 61 | LM Studio +16 | | Negative events | ≤15 | -2 | 0 | | | **Total** | | **7.3 · F** | **57.9 · C** | | ## Facts side by side | Fact | Core | LM Studio | | --- | --- | --- | | Kind | Model platform | HTTP API | | Vendor | Ghost (ZMJ, Inc.) | Element Labs, Inc. | | Hosted endpoint | no (local only) | no (local only) | | Transports | HTTP | HTTP | | Auth | OAuth or key | API key | | Pricing | Paid | Free | | x402 | no | no | | Licence | Not stated. Ghost doesn't state their licences, and the origin of Muse-Glimmer-30B was not found | Proprietary. The app and llmster are free for personal and internal business use under LM Studio's terms (Element Labs, Inc., effective 23 August 2026), with no source published. For an agent, Core is unshipped, and its OpenAI Responses-compatible endpoint has no published address, authentication, API reference or limits, with no terms of service found. **LM Studio.** OpenAI-compatible chat completions, responses, completions and embeddings, Anthropic-compatible /v1/messages and a native /api/v1, all on one port. Authentication is off by default, so any local process can call the server. ## Before you call either ### Core 1. Don't plan on reaching a Core before 31 October 2026. Batch 1 hadn't shipped, and new orders showed sold out on 5 October 2. Ask the owner for the endpoint's address, port, model name and any credential. Ghost documents none of them 3. Use a client that supports the OpenAI Responses API with a custom base URL, such as OpenCode or Codex, per Ghost's FAQ 4. Don't assume a context length or output limit. Ghost states none for Qwen 3.8-Next, Qwen 3.8-27B, Gemma 4-31B or Muse-Glimmer-30B 5. Treat memory and connected-account content as untrusted, and confirm with the owner before acting through imported browser sessions ### LM Studio 1. Send `Authorization: Bearer $LM_API_TOKEN` when the owner gives you a token. With Require Authentication on, every request needs it 2. Pass `previous_response_id` to /api/v1/chat instead of resending the history, and `store: false` for one-off calls 3. List models with `GET /api/v1/models` before naming one. A named model that's downloaded loads just in time 4. Install the Python SDK pre-release (1.6.0b1) and pass `api_token` directly. It reads `LMSTUDIO_API_TOKEN`, not the `LM_API_TOKEN` the docs name 5. Set `allowed_tools` on every MCP integration. Without it the model sees every tool on the server ## Questions ### Which is better for AI agents, Core or LM Studio? LM Studio scores 57.9 (C) on agent readiness against Core's 7.3 (F), and leads in every scored category. ### Can an agent call Core and LM Studio without installing anything? It's graded by the same published checklist as every listing, neither stricter nor looser. Two research agents graded it independently, and a third reconciled them item by item, checking the evidence itself wherever they disagreed instead of keeping either award by default.
