Watch for: The default approval mode in the source is `always_allow`, commented as nothing gated, while the privacy policy and the 26 August release notes say destructive actions wait for approval. ### NanoClaw (B) Good for: A technical owner who wants an assistant on their own machine, reachable from chat apps, with container isolation and scheduled tasks, and who is willing to keep a fork. Ahead on: - Reliability, 78 against 67 - Schema & documentation, 82 against 51 - Agent ergonomics, 70 against 54 - Security & auth, 74 against 54 - Payments & pricing, 60 against 20 - Transparency & trust, 65 against 60 Also in its favour: - No key needed to call it - Free to start without a card - Open source Watch for: The Claude provider runs with `permissionMode: 'bypassPermissions'`, so shell, file and web tools run inside the container with no prompt ## Score by category | Category | Weight | GAIA | NanoClaw | Edge | | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | | Reliability | 16% (20 this run) | 67 | 78 | NanoClaw +11 | | Performance | 10%, pending | pending | pending | not scored in this run | | Schema & documentation | 13% (16.2 this run) | 51 | 82 | NanoClaw +31 | | Agent ergonomics | 13% (16.2 this run) | 54 | 70 | NanoClaw +16 | | Security & auth | 14% (17.5 this run) | 54 | 74 | NanoClaw +20 | | Payments & pricing | 10% (12.5 this run) | 20 | 60 | NanoClaw +40 | | Task success | 10%, pending | pending | pending | not scored in this run | | Maintenance & community | 7% (8.8 this run) | 78 | 78 | even | | Transparency & trust | 7% (8.8 this run) | 60 | 65 | NanoClaw +5 | | Negative events | ≤15 | -5 | -5 | | | **Total** | | **49.5 · D** | **68.3 · B** | | ## Facts side by side | Fact | GAIA | NanoClaw | | --- | --- | --- | | Kind | Platform | Agent harness | | Vendor | The Experience Company | NanoCo, Inc. | | Hosted endpoint | no (local only) | no (local only) | | Transports | | | | Auth | OAuth | None | | Pricing | Paid | Free | | x402 | no | no | | Licence | PolyForm-Noncommercial-1.0.0 | MIT | | Read-only variant documented | no | no | | llms.txt | yes | yes | | Last release | 2026-09-14 | 2026-10-09 | | Terms last updated | 2026-08-14 | no document linked | | Privacy policy last updated | 2026-08-07 | no document linked | | Customer content may train models | not found in the text | | | Terms restrict automated access | yes | | | Terms restrict benchmarking | not found in the text | | | Terms or service can change without notice | yes | | | Arbitration or class-action waiver | yes | | | Popularity | 308 stars | 31k stars | ## Verdicts **GAIA.** GAIA's source is public, so its approval gate, memory store and token handling can be read. Three approval modes and per-tool overrides exist, but the default mode in the source runs every action unasked, which the privacy policy and release notes do not say. Pro costs $30 a month and self-hosting is limited to noncommercial use. **NanoClaw.** Each session runs in an unprivileged Docker container and API keys stay in a credential gateway on the host, so a manipulated agent cannot read them. Inside the container the agent runs with permission prompts off, network egress is open by default, and it can message any chat it is wired to without approval. ## Before you call either ### GAIA 1. Set Settings > Approvals to Always ask or Auto before connecting mail. The default in the source runs every action, including send and delete, without asking. 2. Expect no public API on the hosted service. The backend turns off its OpenAPI document in production, so reach GAIA through its apps, bots or CLI. 3. Check the plan before relying on the hosted service. The README and docs describe a Free plan, and the pricing page says GAIA is a paid product. 4. For self-hosting, prepare Docker, Node.js 20, a WorkOS account and a model key first, and confirm the use is noncommercial under the licence. 5. Add outside tools as MCP servers by URL on the Integrations page. GAIA asks before adding a server in every approval mode. ### NanoClaw 1. Install with `git clone` and `bash nanoclaw.sh`. There is no registry package, and setup needs Docker, Node 22 or later and a Claude or Codex credential 2. Set `NANOCLAW_EGRESS_LOCKDOWN=true` before giving an agent credentials or an audience of strangers. The default leaves egress open 3. Put chats with different audiences in separate agent groups. Every session of a group shares one read-write workspace and memory tree 4. Turn on per-request approval for a secret in the gateway when its use should wait for a person. It is off unless configured 5. On OneCLI installs, move the gateway to 1.42.0 by the upgrade guide before updating to 2026.10.0. The updater stops until that is done ## Questions ### Which is better for AI agents, GAIA or NanoClaw?
