## Which one, for what

### FreeScout (F)

Good for: Small teams that want a free, self-hosted Help Scout alternative and can run PHP.

Ahead on:
- Reliability, 73 against 60
- Maintenance & community, 70 against 9

Also in its favour:
- Open source

Watch for: API keys carry no scopes, and the docs offer an `api_key` URL parameter

### HelpDesk (D)

Good for: A team already on HelpDesk or Text that wants an agent to read queues, draft replies, add private notes and change status over REST.

Ahead on:
- Schema & documentation, 63 against 35
- Security & auth, 44 against 30
- Payments & pricing, 35 against 0
- Transparency & trust, 67 against 36

Also in its favour:
- A hosted endpoint, with nothing to install

Watch for: No rate limit, 429 behaviour or idempotency key found in the docs

## Why the edge

### Maintenance & community: FreeScout +61

- FreeScout (70): Core v1.8.249 tagged on 31 October 2026 (30). Twelve tags from 30 August to 31 October (20). Issue responsiveness was not read because the GitHub API refused us for its rate limit (10 of 25, unchecked). No official SDK, and no MCP server from the project (0). CI with tests on MySQL and PostgreSQL, and a Laravel dependency advisory taken on 31 October (10). 30 + 20 + 10 + 0 + 10 = 70.
- HelpDesk (9): Text's API changelog runs to 28 October 2026, but none of its entries since 6 August names the Ticketing API, and no dated change to this API was found anywhere (recency 0, 90-day line 0). Entries for other Text APIs don't count for this one, as for an umbrella SDK. Closed service with a developer email, Discord and 24-hour email support, per the 9 October check (9, kept as the earlier partial). No official SDK (0), no package (0). 0 + 0 + 9 + 0 + 0 = 9.

### Payments & pricing: HelpDesk +35

- FreeScout (0): Self-hosted rule, with pricing scored on the paid module the API needs. No x402, MPP or L402 (0). The module's price is drawn by the store's script and could not be read, so it scores as not found (0). The core is free, but no free route to the API exists (0). A person buys the module in a browser and installs it (0). 0 + 0 + 0 + 0 = 0.
- HelpDesk (35): No x402, MPP or L402 (0). Seat prices public ($19 and $79 a user a month billed yearly, $25 and $99 monthly, Enterprise by quote). Text's API pricing page meters every request except those answered 500 and sells 100,000 more calls for $29.50, and platform.text.com listed $0.27 per 1,000 private requests per the 9 October check, not re-read on 4 November (15, kept as the earlier partial). 14-day trial with no card (20). Browser signup and a console token (0). 0 + 15 + 20 + 0 = 35.

### Transparency & trust: HelpDesk +31

- FreeScout (36): AGPL-3.0 core, and the module page says the module is AGPL-3.0 too (30). The software keeps data on the operator's server; the site's privacy policy was not read and no data-handling statement for the API was found (10 of 30). No deprecation policy or dated notices (0). No telemetry statement or opt-out found (5 of 20, since self-hosted data stays with the operator). 30 + 10 + 0 + 5 = 45.
- HelpDesk (67): Closed service under Terms of Use dated 3 July 2026 naming Text, Inc. and covering APIs (15). Privacy Policy, DPA and Data Storage Policy placing HelpDesk data in the United States, per the 9 October check, not re-read on 4 November; DPA section 2.4 allows training on Client Data while the AI FAQ limits it to per-account internal models (17). Text's version lifecycle doesn't list this API and one webhook event is deprecated without a date (5, partial). 10 days' notice of new sub-processors and a stated storage location, with the sub-processor list on a script-drawn trust centre (12). 15 + 17 + 5 + 12 = 49.

### Schema & documentation: HelpDesk +28

- FreeScout (35): No OpenAPI, Postman collection or other machine-readable contract found (0). No llms.txt (404) or Markdown docs (0). Each endpoint has a short description and parameter notes such as what `imported` and `embed` do (10 of 20). Parameters are marked required or optional with types, and few enums (8 of 15). curl, JavaScript and PHP examples for each endpoint, and a status-code table with an `errorCode` and `errors` body (12 of 15). Module versions and core releases are tagged, with no dated API changelog (5 of 15). 0 + 0 + 10 + 8 + 12 + 5 = 35.
- HelpDesk (63): api.helpdesk.com refuses our reader in robots.txt, so the 9 October readings from its Redoc page are struck and the API was re-read from Text's copy. Text's docs embed the OpenAPI 3.0.3 operation (Ticketing API 1.0.0, server api.helpdesk.com) on each of 133 method pages, and llms.txt links the Ticketing openapi.json (25). llms.txt and Markdown pages (10). Few operations carry descriptions, though the index explains silos, attachments and date ranges (7, kept as the earlier partial). Enums, UUID formats and required fields with some free-form objects (11, partial). Examples on the pages read, with only 200 responses documented (5, partial). Path versioned at v1, and Text's API changelog has no entry for this API (5). 25 + 10 + 7 + 11 + 5 + 5 = 63.

### Security & auth: HelpDesk +14

- FreeScout (30): A global API key and personal keys that act with a user's permissions, sent in a header or Basic auth, with no scopes. The docs list an `api_key` query parameter as a way to authenticate, so 10 off (20 less 10, 10). Personal keys follow user roles, with no read-only key and no confirmation step for deletes (5 of 20). Conversations carry customer email, the security policy notes that external images in received email load by default, and no prompt-injection guidance was found (0). No API audit log found (0). SECURITY.md routes core reports through GitHub security advisories, CVEs are requested after fixes, and advisories are published, with no bug bounty or certification (15 of 20). 10 + 5 + 0 + 0 + 15 = 30.
- HelpDesk (44): OAuth 2.1 authorisation code grant with PKCE or personal access tokens as Basic auth, asking only for `accounts--my:ro`, so a token carries its user's whole role (20). Three roles, settings read-only for Agents and Viewers, deleted tickets kept 30 days in trash, no confirmation step (10). Ticket text is customer-written and no prompt-injection guidance was found (0). Audit log endpoint with an `api` author type covering configuration changes (9, kept as the earlier partial). SOC 2 Type 2 is claimed on the pricing page, with no security.txt on www.helpdesk.com or www.text.com (both 404) and no disclosure policy or bounty found, so a bare SOC 2 claim (5). 20 + 10 + 0 + 9 + 5 = 44.

### Reliability: FreeScout +13

- FreeScout (73): Read with the local-software lines, because FreeScout runs only on the operator's server; there is no first-party hosted service. Installs from official releases with a web installer and updater, with PHP and MySQL or PostgreSQL requirements stated (20). Public CI in test.yml, test-pgsql.yml and phpcs.yml with feature tests; pass status not read (18 of 25). Open crash and regression issues were not read because the GitHub API refused us for its rate limit (10 of 25, unchecked). Patch releases v1.8.238 to v1.8.249 with notes on GitHub, and module versions tied to a required core version (10 of 15). Past 1.0 (15). 20 + 18 + 10 + 10 + 15 = 73.
- HelpDesk (60): Graded on the hosted Ticketing REST API. Status page at status.helpdesk.com on incident.io with components for the Agent app, API, Integrations, support chat and subprocessors, and a 90-day history (20). From 6 August to 4 November the history and feed list no incidents, only scheduled maintenance on 30 September and 15 October (30). No rate limit found in the Ticketing reference or Text's docs (0). No 429, backoff or idempotency guidance (0). The pricing page lists SLAs under Enterprise, but no SLA document was found (0). v1 public API (10). 20 + 30 + 0 + 0 + 0 + 10 = 60.

## How the scores have moved

No score change since it was listed.

- -0.1 on 28 October 2026: correction
- +0.1 on 27 October 2026: checklist

## Verdicts

**FreeScout.** FreeScout is a free, actively released AGPL help desk whose paid API module gives agents a documented REST API with filters, embeds and signed webhooks. Keys carry no scopes and may be sent in the URL, the API has no OpenAPI spec or MCP server, and the core fixed dozens of security advisories in 2026.

**HelpDesk.** The Ticketing API covers the ticket workflow, with OpenAPI 3.0.3 operations on 133 Markdown pages, cursor pagination and many list filters. No rate limit, error format or 429 handling is documented, tokens carry no ticket scopes, and no dated change to this API was found.

## Before you call either

### FreeScout

1. Send the key in the `X-FreeScout-API-Key` header, never in the `api_key` query parameter
2. Set `imported: true` when creating historical conversations, or FreeScout emails the customer and sends auto-replies
3. Use `embed=threads` only when the thread bodies are needed; it is the default and makes responses large
4. Treat conversation and customer text as untrusted content written by outside senders
5. Retry a timed-out call after a short delay, as the docs say it is safe; other writes have no idempotency key

### HelpDesk

1. Send Basic auth with the account ID as username and the personal access token as password, and always set a `User-Agent` header
2. Create the token from a Viewer or Agent account when the task allows. A token inherits its creator's role, and only Administrators can change settings
3. Reply or add a note through `PATCH /v1/tickets/{ticketID}` with `message.text`. Set `isPrivate` to true for an internal note, because the default sends to the requester
4. Page `/v1/tickets` with `next.value` and `next.ID` from the last item, keep `sortBy` and `order` fixed, and pass `silo` to read archive, spam or trash
5. Budget for metered calls. Every request except those answered 500 counts against the Text subscription.
