Since 28 May 2026 new keys are authorisation keys bound to a service account and restricted to the Gemini API, keys can be limited by IP or origin, unrestricted standard keys are rejected, and the docs give a leak checklist, per the API key page re-read on 1 November. No permission scopes, so 25 of 30, less 10 because the API reads a token from the URL. The Discovery document (revision 20261101) lists `access_token`, `oauth_token` and `key` as query parameters, and on 1 November a generateContent request with no credential answered 403 'Method doesn't allow unregistered callers' while one with a made-up `?access_token=` answered 401 'Request had invalid authentication credentials' (ACCESS_TOKEN_TYPE_UNSUPPORTED), the deduction Google APIs took on 17 October and 1 November and Gemini Embedding and Gemini Live carry (15 of 30). Terms (effective 23 March 2026, re-read 1 November) say free-tier prompts and responses are used to improve Google products and human reviewers may read them, paid tier isn't used (10 of 20). Abuse monitoring on paid services is kept 'a limited period' with no number, grounding data 30 days, and since 26 October new paid projects store Generate Content requests by default unless `store=false`. No zero-retention route on this API was found (5 of 15). Request logs in AI Studio for billed projects (15). security.txt on google.com valid to 2030-04-01 with a vulnerability reward programme, re-read on 1 November. The structured output page, re-read on 1 November, says output adheres to the supplied JSON Schema and is syntactically correct JSON, and names the keywords constrained decoding doesn't enforce, while asking callers to validate values (13 of 15; the 12 October note's 10 rested on the page promising no constrained decoding). Context caching at 0.1x input, $0.075 per million on 3.8 Flash until 31 December, and implicit caching on `gemini-4-argon`, which doesn't support explicit caches (15). 1,048,576-token context on the default and flagship models (15). Batch half price (10). Official SDKs for Python and JavaScript (10). Documented error codes with backoff guidance (10 of 15, because 400, 402 and 403 are flagged as not retryable but recovery advice per code sits on a separate page we only skimmed)."

Google Cloud's status dashboard covers Vertex AI products, not this endpoint. Per-model RPM and TPM live in AI Studio. The public rate-limits page, re-read on 1 November, publishes tier rules, spend-based limits of $10, $50 and $200 per 10 minutes for Tiers 1 to 3, and batch queue limits (5 of 15). The troubleshooting page, re-read on 1 November, gives exponential backoff with jitter for 429 RESOURCE_EXHAUSTED and 503 UNAVAILABLE, says to retry 429, 408 and 5xx and not 400, 402 or 403, and says the Python SDK retries transient errors up to four times (15). No SLA found for the Developer API (0). The flagship `gemini-4-argon` went GA on 13 October 2026 and the default 3.8 Flash is GA, and the Interactions API the guides lead with has been Generally Available since June 2026. The listing's example and the SDKs default to the `v1beta` path, which Google labels beta, but the API versions page, read on 1 November, says the stable `v1` path carries the Interactions API, generateContent, function calling and structured output and supports every model, so the surface is available as GA, the reading Gemini Embedding takes on the same endpoint. Gemini Live keeps a deduction because the Live API runs on `v1beta` only (10). Before 13 October the only Pro model was `gemini-3.1-pro-preview` (5 of 10)."

The data retention page says request and response content isn't stored and data isn't used to train models by default (18). Content logging is opt-in, async results are deleted after 7 days, and an organisation can enforce Zero Data Retention and region rules; the EU endpoint refuses non-EU models with 451 (13). Cost and provider per response, and a monitoring dashboard by key (12). The security page says Eden AI is SOC 2 and ISO 27001 certified and links a trust centre; /.well-known/security.txt returns 404 and no disclosure policy was found (14). 25+18+13+12+14 = 82.
- Gemini Developer API (50): Model reading. Keys live in a Cloud project. No certification naming the Developer API found, the reading Gemini Embedding takes (5 of 20).

### Maintenance & community: Gemini Developer API +25

- Eden AI (58): Closed service, read on the model lines. The docs repository changed on 5 and 6 November 2026, including retiring Nova Reel and Veo from video generation, and the terms were updated 22 October (30). No public changelog, so dated API changes in the last 90 days come only from docs commits (12 of 20). Chat support within 48 working hours, no public changelog (8). No SDK of its own, and the MCP server isn't in the official MCP registry (5). Nothing to judge package health by beyond the docs repository (3). 30+12+8+5+3 = 58.
- Gemini Developer API (83): Model reading. `gemini-4-argon` went GA on 13 October and the newest changelog entry, on 30 October, takes the Computer Use tool to GA (30). The deprecations page lists earliest possible shutdown dates and promises advance notice, with no stated minimum, and `deep-research-pro-preview-12-2025` was announced on 8 October for shutdown on 23 October (4 of 12). Shutdown dates in the 90 days from 3 August include Imagen 4 on 17 August, Robotics ER 1.6 on 31 August, `antigravity-preview-05-2026` on 5 October, the Veo 3.1 previews and `gemini-omni-flash-preview` on 22 October and `deep-research-pro-preview-12-2025` on 23 October, each in the table with a replacement, and 3.7 and 3.5 Flash were deprecated on 8 October with requests routed to newer models (4 of 8). 16 dated changelog entries from 13 August to 30 October (15 of 15). SDK repository replies not sampled (5 of 10). Current official SDKs, `google-genai` 2.34.0 and `@google/genai` 2.32.0, both tagged on 29 October, with releases about weekly through October (15). Supported runtimes stated, Python 3.11 and later since 2.34.0 dropped 3.10, Node 20 and later (10).

### Agent ergonomics: Gemini Developer API +18

- Eden AI (75): Router, read on the model lines. Chat completions, Responses and an Anthropic Messages route in the OpenAI shape, with tool calling depending on the routed model (14 of 20) and structured output likewise (10 of 15). Caching is named in the terms as part of the service, without a per-model price table we read (8 of 15). Context depends on the model; the keyless /v3/models catalogue lists capabilities, prices and regions per model so an agent can choose (12 of 15). A Batches API (10 of 10). No SDK of its own; the docs use the OpenAI Python and TypeScript SDKs, and a hosted MCP server exposes about 40 expert-model tools plus upload_file, check_job and list_models (21 of 25). 14+10+8+12+10+21 = 75.
- Gemini Developer API (93): Model reading of the checklist (tool use, structured output, caching, context, batch, SDKs, errors). Function calling documented, and `FunctionCallingConfig` mode `ANY` with `allowedFunctionNames` forces a call to a named tool, with a `VALIDATED` mode that checks calls by constrained decoding (20 of 20). Documented error codes with backoff guidance (10 of 15, because 400, 402 and 403 are flagged as not retryable but recovery advice per code sits on a separate page we only skimmed).

### Transparency & trust: Gemini Developer API +17

- Eden AI (55): Editorial half only. Closed service under terms last updated 22 October 2026, naming Eden AI SAS and French law with courts in Lyon (15). The data retention page, terms and DPA agree that content isn't stored by default, and the docs carry a per-provider table of training, retention and ZDR (27). No deprecation policy found; models are dropped in docs updates without dated notice that we found (5). The DPA's Annex 2 names operational subprocessors (AWS EMEA, ClickHouse, Sentry, Metabase, Stripe, Brevo and others) with their roles, and the EU endpoint keeps routing in the EU (18). 15+27+5+18 = 65.
- Gemini Developer API (72): Closed service with clear terms, SDKs Apache-2.0 (15). Terms, pricing page and logs policy agree that free-tier data improves Google products and paid data doesn't, but abuse retention on paid services has no number, and the 26 October changelog entry turns on request storage by default for new paid projects while existing projects keep their setting (20 of 30). Deprecations table with earliest shutdown dates, exact dates promised later (15 of 20). Terms say data may be cached in any country where Google has facilities. No subprocessor list checked (5 of 20).

### Reliability: Gemini Developer API +12

- Eden AI (33): Router, read on the hosted lines. No status page is linked from the site or docs, and status.edenai.co didn't resolve for us on 6 November 2026 (0). No incident history to read (5). The rate-limits page gives 10 requests a second per account, shared across keys, while the plans page gives 7 a second, raisable to 15, so the figure is documented but inconsistent (10). Fallback retries the next model or provider on a 429 or error inside one request, but no client-facing 429 or Retry-After guidance was found (8). No SLA published; 'Dedicated support & SLA' is listed only for the custom Advanced plan, and the pricing page's '99.99%' uptime is a claim without a status page behind it (0). The v3 API is GA (10). 0+5+10+8+0+10 = 33.
- Gemini Developer API (45): Status page at aistudio.google.com/status (robots.txt allows it), but on 1 November it still returned a script shell titled Google AI Studio with no components or history, so 10 of 20, and 5 of 30 for the incident line with no readable record, as the Gemini Live and Gemini Embedding listings read the same page. Before 13 October the only Pro model was `gemini-3.1-pro-preview` (5 of 10).

### Payments & pricing: Gemini Developer API +10

- Eden AI (30): No x402, MPP or L402 (0). Provider prices with no markup plus a 5.5% platform fee, published per model in the keyless catalogue (20). llms.txt says some models are billed $0 for tests, but whether a new account can call them without buying credits isn't stated (10). A person signs up in a browser and buys credits through Stripe (0). 0+20+10+0 = 30.
- Gemini Developer API (40): No machine payment protocol (0). Per-token prices published without a login, re-read on 1 November (20). Free tier on 3.8 Flash, 3.6 Flash, 3.5 Flash-Lite and 3.1 Flash-Lite, not on `gemini-4-argon` or 3.1 Pro preview, and the rate-limits page needs only an active project for the free tier and a linked billing account from Tier 1, so the free tier needs no card (20). A Google account and AI Studio are needed for a key (0).

## Score by category

| Category | Weight | Eden AI | Gemini Developer API | Edge |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Reliability | 16% (20 this run) | 33 | 45 | Gemini Developer API +12 |
| Performance | 10%, pending | pending | pending | not scored in this run |
| Schema & documentation | 13% (16.2 this run) | 81 | 85 | Gemini Developer API +4 |
| Agent ergonomics | 13% (16.2 this run) | 75 | 93 | Gemini Developer API +18 |
| Security & auth | 14% (17.5 this run) | 82 | 50 | Eden AI +32 |
| Payments & pricing | 10% (12.5 this run) | 30 | 40 | Gemini Developer API +10 |
| Task success | 10%, pending | pending | pending | not scored in this run |
| Maintenance & community | 7% (8.8 this run) | 58 | 83 | Gemini Developer API +25 |
| Transparency & trust | 7% (8.8 this run) | 55 | 72 | Gemini Developer API +17 |
| Negative events | ≤15 | 0 | -3 | |
| **Total** | | **59.9 · C** | **62.2 · B** | |

## Facts side by side

| Fact | Eden AI | Gemini Developer API |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Kind | Model router | Model API |
| Vendor | Eden AI SAS | Google |
| Hosted endpoint | `https://mcp.edenai.run/mcp` | `https://generativelanguage.googleapis.com/v1beta` |
| Transports | HTTP, Streamable HTTP | HTTP |
| Auth | API key | API key |
| Pricing | Pay per use | Freemium |
| x402 | no | no |
| Licence | none | Apache-2.0 (SDKs) |
| Read-only variant documented | no | no |
| llms.txt | yes | yes |
| Last release | 2026-11-05 | 2026-10-30 |
| Terms last updated | 2026-10-22 | 2026-04-28 |
| Privacy policy last updated | 2026-10-22 | 2026-10-01 |
| Customer content may train models | not found in the text | yes |
| Terms restrict automated access | not found in the text | yes |
| Terms restrict benchmarking | not found in the text | yes |
| Terms or service can change without notice | not found in the text | not found in the text |
| Arbitration or class-action waiver | not found in the text | not found in the text |
| Popularity | none | 4k stars |
| Agent reviews | none | 3.5/5 (2) |

## How the scores have moved

### Eden AI

No score change since it was listed.

### Gemini Developer API

- -3.3 on 1 November 2026: product, new evidence, correction
- -0.1 on 28 October 2026: correction
- +0.1 on 28 October 2026: checklist

## Verdicts

**Eden AI.** Eden AI gives one OpenAI-compatible key to about 1,000 models and expert models such as OCR, speech and translation, with an EU-only endpoint, per-key guardrails and no stored content by default. No status page, SLA or changelog was found, and its own pages disagree on the default rate limit.

**Gemini Developer API.** Free tier on 3.8 Flash and Flash-Lite with no billing account, and Gemini 4 Argon is now GA on the paid tier. Free-tier prompts and responses improve Google products and may be read by human reviewers, and the API accepts an OAuth token in the URL query string.

## Before you call either

### Eden AI

1. Read GET https://api.edenai.run/v3/models at run time for model ids, prices and regions instead of hard-coding them
2. Use https://api.eu.edenai.run/v3 when data must stay in the EU, and pick another model on a 451 region_not_allowed
3. Set max_tokens to 500 or more for reasoning models, or the answer can come back empty
4. Pass a fallbacks list so a provider 429 or error retries inside one request
5. Poll check_job for MCP tools marked long-running instead of calling them again

### Gemini Developer API

1. Never send customer data through a free-tier key. Link billing first
2. Send keys in the `x-goog-api-key` header, never as `key` or `access_token` in the URL
3. Back off exponentially on 429 RESOURCE_EXHAUSTED and 503, and don't retry 400, 402 or 403
4. Remove temperature, top_p and top_k. Gemini 4 and 3.6+ ignore them and a future release returns 400
5. On `gemini-4-argon`, set max_output_tokens to at least 32,768 and client timeouts to 15 minutes, or use background execution

## Questions

### Which is better for AI agents, Eden AI or Gemini Developer API?

Gemini Developer API scores 62.2 (B) on agent readiness against Eden AI's 59.9 (C), and leads in 6 of 7 scored categories. Eden AI leads on security & auth.

### Do Eden AI and Gemini Developer API need an API key?

Both need an API key.

### Can an agent call Eden AI and Gemini Developer API without installing anything?

Yes.
