## Which one, for what

### DigitalOcean Spaces (B)

Good for: Teams already on DigitalOcean that want object storage with a CDN and a flat $5 entry price for up to 250 GiB, with free transfer to Droplets in the same region.

Ahead on:
- Reliability, 87 against 80

Watch for: The Spaces MCP server has ten tools for access keys and CDN endpoints. None reads, writes, lists or shares an object

### Google Cloud Storage (BB)

Good for: Agents on Google Cloud that store and share files and datasets. amazon-s3, azure-blob-storage and cloudflare-r2 are the closest listings; teams outside Google Cloud with S3 tooling may prefer S3-compatible stores.

Ahead on:
- Schema & documentation, 81 against 63
- Agent ergonomics, 85 against 73
- Security & auth, 85 against 79
- Payments & pricing, 30 against 20
- Maintenance & community, 88 against 67
- Transparency & trust, 85 against 75

Also in its favour:
- Agent-ready, a grade of BB or better

Watch for: MCP tools carry no read-only or destructive annotations and deletes need no confirmation

## Why the edge

### Maintenance & community: Google Cloud Storage +21

- DigitalOcean Spaces (67): Closed service. Its own release notes, re-read on 2 November, still stop at 8 April 2026. The listing's package, `@digitalocean/mcp`, carries the Spaces key and CDN tools, and v1.1.0 on 25 September 2026 added structured output to them, 38 days before the check. A release that changes the product's own tools sets the recency line in this run, while the nine tags since v1.2.0 (7 October) leave the Spaces tools unchanged (20, was 0 when the MCP server wasn't counted as a release of this service). No Spaces release notes in the last 90 days. The MCP server has 17 tags from v1.0.68 on 10 August to v1.6.4 on 29 October, two of which change the Spaces tools (v1.0.68 and v1.1.0) and count in full, and 15 count half as releases that leave this service unchanged, well over three (20, was 10). Public release notes with an RSS feed, support tickets and a public MCP repository with 131 commits from v1.1.2 to v1.6.4. Issue response times were not checked (10). Current official SDKs in three languages. The only MCP registry entry for DigitalOcean on 2 November is a third party's (10). The MCP repository has CI and release workflows and tests that guard tool annotations (7). 20 + 20 + 10 + 10 + 7 = 67.
- Google Cloud Storage (88): Release notes on 4 November 2026 (30). Entries on 30 October, 13 October, 30 September, 10 September and 3 September (20). A closed service with dated release notes and paid support; issue trackers for the client libraries are public (15). Official client libraries in many languages (15). Libraries ship with end-to-end checksums by default since 30 September (8). 30 + 20 + 15 + 15 + 8 = 88.

### Schema & documentation: Google Cloud Storage +18

- DigitalOcean Spaces (63): The DigitalOcean API has a public OpenAPI file, which covers access keys and CDN endpoints. The S3 surface has no description file. Its reference lists each supported operation with headers and the minimum permission level, and defers to AWS for the rest (15). `llms.txt` and a Markdown twin of every page (10). The S3 reference gives one line per operation with a link to AWS, and the MCP tool descriptions are a few words each, such as 'Delete a CDN' (10). Header tables per operation, enumerated grants on the keys API, and MCP tools with required fields, a maximum and output schemas (10). A request and response example for most operations, but no error codes in the S3 reference beyond `NotImplemented` for unsupported calls (8). Dated Spaces release notes and a versioned DigitalOcean API. The limits page and the compatibility page disagree on `ListObjectsV2` (10).
- Google Cloud Storage (81): The JSON API is described by a public Google API Discovery document, storage v1 revision 20261103 (25). docs.cloud.google.com/llms.txt and /storage/llms.txt return 404 (0). The reference explains each method and the docs say when to use XML, JSON or gRPC and that gsutil is legacy (14). Typed resources with enums for storage classes and predefined ACLs (14). Samples in every client library and an error reference with HTTP codes and reasons (13). API version v1 and dated release notes, the latest on 4 November 2026 (15). 25 + 0 + 14 + 14 + 13 + 15 = 81.

### Agent ergonomics: Google Cloud Storage +12

- DigitalOcean Spaces (73): Graded as an API, with the MCP server noted. Responses are sized by S3's own controls, `Range` and `HEAD` among the listed headers, and the Spaces MCP endpoint carries only ten compact tools (20). S3 listing with prefix and marker, and `per_page` up to 200 on the DigitalOcean API. The limits page lists `list-objects-v2` pagination as a known issue (14). `503 Slow Down` and `NotImplemented` are the only S3 errors described. The DigitalOcean API documents its error bodies (10). A `PUT` by key can be repeated, conditional copy headers are listed, and all ten MCP tools set read-only, idempotent or destructive hints with a risk class (16). AWS SDK examples in several languages and official DigitalOcean SDKs for TypeScript, Go and Python. Most AWS SDKs need `us-east-1` as a placeholder region to create a bucket (13).
- Google Cloud Storage (85): Graded as an API with a nine-tool MCP server. The fields parameter selects partial responses, and Range reads fetch part of an object (22). maxResults and pageToken paging, prefix and delimiter filters and match globs (20). JSON errors with code, message and reason, and a documented retry table (16). Generation and metageneration preconditions make retries safe; the MCP reference gives no read-only or destructive annotations (14). Client libraries in many languages with retries on by default, but every call needs Google auth and a project (13). 22 + 20 + 16 + 14 + 13 = 85.

### Payments & pricing: Google Cloud Storage +10

- DigitalOcean Spaces (20): No x402, MPP or L402. Stablecoin payment through Stripe is an account payment method (0). Prices per GiB are public without a login (20). The $5 sign-up credit needs a valid payment method before any resource is created (0). A person signs up in a browser. The keys API needs a token from that account (0).
- Google Cloud Storage (30): No x402, MPP or L402 (0). Per-operation and per-GB prices public without login, though the regional storage table draws by script (20). Always Free covers 5 GB-months and small operation counts in three US regions, but a Google Cloud billing account is needed; whether a card is required wasn't confirmed today (10). A person creates the project and billing account in a browser (0). 0 + 20 + 10 + 0 = 30.

### Transparency & trust: Google Cloud Storage +10

- DigitalOcean Spaces (75): Closed service under a Terms of Service Agreement updated on 22 August 2026 that leaves ownership of content with the customer. The MCP server is MIT (15). The DPA of 6 February 2026 gives deletion within 30 days of account deactivation and breach notice without undue delay. The privacy policy excludes customer content, and the terms give no retention period in days (22). No general deprecation policy. The terms promise notice of changes as far as reasonably practicable, and old rate limits are dated per data centre (8). A sub-processor list of 10 June 2026 with activity and location, Cloudflare for the CDN and Wasabi for Cold Storage among them, and 13 named storage regions (18).
- Google Cloud Storage (85): Closed service under the Google Cloud terms; client libraries are Apache-2.0 (18). Google's privacy policy, the Cloud Data Processing Addendum and a sub-processor list last modified 19 October 2026 apply, per the Secret Manager listing's 1 November check (22). Dated notices in release notes and a deprecated read_text MCP tool that names its replacement; Google Cloud's deprecation policy wasn't re-read today (15). Sub-processors are listed with locations, and each bucket is created in a chosen location (18). 18 + 22 + 15 + 18 = 73.

### Reliability: DigitalOcean Spaces +7

- DigitalOcean Spaces (87): Graded as a hosted API on the S3 surface. Status page at status.digitalocean.com with a readable history feed (20). The feed, read on 2 November, holds 25 entries from 3 August to 28 October 2026 and covers the 90 days from 4 August. Failed write and configuration operations across services, Spaces among them, from 06:42 to 09:08 UTC on 6 August affected one class of requests, so this run reads it as partial and minor (the 9 October check read it as a major). The MKC1 regional interruption on 19 August included Spaces in one region, control panel access to Spaces failed from 12:59 to about 14:52 UTC on 21 August, and a 63-minute network disruption in BLR1 on 3 October included Spaces, each partial. A Cold Storage billing display fault on 4 August and the announced Spaces maintenance windows of 24 to 27 August are trivial. Minor incidents only (20, was 10). Limits published with numbers, 800 operations a second per new bucket and 5,000 requests an hour on the DigitalOcean API (15). Exponential backoff advised on `503 Slow Down`, re-read on 2 November, and `retry-after` on the DigitalOcean API's 429. No retry or idempotency guidance for S3 writes (12). The Spaces SLA commits to 99.9 per cent monthly uptime per bucket, per the 9 October check (10). The S3 API and remote MCP servers are generally available (10). 20 + 20 + 15 + 12 + 10 + 10 = 87.
- Google Cloud Storage (80): Google Cloud's status dashboard with a per-product incident feed (20). In the 90 days from 8 August, Cloud Storage appears in a high-severity incident on 20 August across 27 products (about 3 hours 40 minutes of timeouts and errors), a medium incident on 8 to 9 October with elevated upload and write errors, and a medium regional incident in europe-west2 on 20 October. One major outage (10). The request-rate guide gives numbers, no ramp-up needed below 1,000 writes or 5,000 reads a second per bucket, with gradual ramping above (15). The retry strategy page lists retryable responses, idempotent operations and preconditions that make writes safe to retry, and the client libraries back off exponentially (15). SLA with monthly uptime of 99.95 per cent for multi-region Standard and 99.9 per cent regional (10). Generally available, and the MCP server since 20 April 2026 (10). 20 + 10 + 15 + 15 + 10 + 10 = 80.

## How the scores have moved

### DigitalOcean Spaces

- +5.0 on 2 November 2026: new evidence, correction
- +0.1 on 27 October 2026: checklist

### Google Cloud Storage

No score change since it was listed.

## Verdicts

**DigitalOcean Spaces.** Per-bucket access keys with read or read-write-delete grants, an 800 operations a second limit per bucket and a 99.9 per cent SLA are all published. The MCP server manages keys and CDN endpoints only, not objects, the S3 reference documents no error codes, and a payment method is required before any bucket is created.

**Google Cloud Storage.** IAM per bucket and MCP method, signed URLs, preconditions for safe retries and a 99.95 per cent multi-region SLA make it a well-governed object store for agents. The nine-tool MCP server has no read-only or destructive annotations, reads stop at 8 MiB, and a person must set up a project and billing first.

## Before you call either

### DigitalOcean Spaces

1. Set the endpoint to `https://<region>.digitaloceanspaces.com` and, in AWS SDKs other than Python's, set `region` to `us-east-1` when creating a bucket
2. Ask for a limited access key with a Read or Read/Write/Delete grant on one bucket. A full access key can create, configure and delete every bucket
3. Do the object work through the S3 API. The MCP server and `doctl` cannot upload, list, move or delete files
4. Retry with exponential backoff on `503 Slow Down`, and keep below 800 operations a second per bucket
5. Fetch presigned links from the origin host, not the CDN. The docs say presigned requests through the CDN are not cached and can double the bandwidth charge
6. Avoid many tiny objects. Each bills as at least 4 KiB on Standard and 128 KiB on Cold Storage, which also has a 30-day minimum

### Google Cloud Storage

1. Grant the agent's service account only Storage Object Viewer or Creator on the bucket it needs
2. Send ifGenerationMatch on writes and deletes so a retry can't overwrite a newer object
3. Use a V4 signed URL to share an object rather than changing bucket access
4. Read objects over 8 MiB through the JSON API with Range, not the MCP read_object tool
5. Confirm with the user before delete_bucket or delete_object
