The person signs in and picks which portfolios the agent may use. Ten `mcp:*` scopes cover reads, portfolio changes, orders, trades and transfers between portfolios; `offline_access` adds a refresh token. Access is revoked under Coinbase Account > Security > Connections. Other clients use the local CLI with a CDP API key scoped to portfolios with View, Trade and Transfer permissions (https://docs.cdp.coinbase.com/coinbase-for-agents/skill.md, checked 2026-10-24).",

Judgement call (25 of 30). Changelog entries for futures (17 August) and stocks (21 August) both name the MCP server, and the CLI built from the same agent spec shipped six versions from 14 August to 30 September (20). A public changelog, a CDP Discord for integration help and a one-way feedback tool limited to six notes a day, none tested (10 of 25). Not in the official MCP registry; a search for coinbase on 24 October found only third-party servers (0). The CLI has no runtime dependencies but runs a postinstall script and has no public repository or CI (3 of 10).",

Judgement call (10 of 25). llms.txt, a Markdown twin of every docs page and a self-contained setup guide written for agents (10). The docs give one line per tool, and the guide has a routing matrix saying which tools to use or avoid for spot, equities and futures, but the tool descriptions as served weren't read (12 of 20). Enums and constraints are described for sessions, order types and sizes, not verified on the server (8 of 15). Order and x402 examples, and two error tables with cause and fix for 401, 403 `Missing required scopes`, `PERMISSION_DENIED`, `MISSING_FIELDS`, `INVALID_VALUE`, `INVALID_FORMAT` and x402 failures (13 of 15). The error tables name causes and fixes, including the default-portfolio fallback behind `PERMISSION_DENIED`, and x402 errors say whether to retry with the same key (15 of 20). Client order IDs and x402 idempotency keys make retries safe. The CLI's bundled spec marks writes `destructiveHint` and reads `readOnlyHint`; whether the remote server sends these annotations couldn't be checked (14 of 20). Judgement call (10 of 20). A read-only grant and a funded separate portfolio limit what an agent can touch, and transfers move funds only between the person's portfolios. No per-order size limit or server-side confirmation is documented; the June blog's trade-size limits are still "soon", and the setup guide tells agents to request every scope rather than the least needed (12 of 20). x402 fetch returns third-party data from a curated catalogue only, and the 13 October changelog removes Bazaar resources whose metadata carries prompt-injection risk; no guidance on treating returned data as untrusted was found beyond citing only values the source returns (8 of 15). Orders, transfers and payments appear in the Coinbase account and connections are listed in account settings, but no per-call log for MCP was found (8 of 15). HackerOne bug bounty named in coinbase.com's security.txt, which expired on 1 June 2024; no security.txt on agents.coinbase.com; certifications not read because coinbase.com answered a bot check (12 of 20).
Keys with nine named permissions, optional expiry, IP restriction and nonce window, plus an OAuth sign-in from the CLI (authorisation code with PKCE, public client) that mints a no-withdrawal key expiring within 90 days or a read-only key (30). Read-only and no-withdrawal keys, position limits and pair allowlists in account settings, and MCP approval prompts for 33 dangerous tools (18 of 20). The API returns no untrusted content; the CLI docs warn that the feedback tool uploads a local file without approval (10). Keys and their permissions are listed in settings and ledgers record activity, but no per-call log for the operator was found (6 of 15). A valid security.txt, a bug bounty policy page, SECURITY.md and a secure SDLC workflow in the CLI; certifications not read (16 of 20). 30 + 18 + 10 + 6 + 16 = 80."

The last dated change to the server in the CDP changelog is US stocks on 21 August 2026; the docs added three x402 tools in October (the overview of 2 October still calls them coming soon, the MCP page was modified on 9 October) and the setup guide on 22 October, with no changelog entry. The CLI has no runtime dependencies but runs a postinstall script and has no public repository or CI (3 of 10).
- Kraken API (81): Read as a closed service with an open-source client. Changelog entry of 27 October 2026 and kraken-cli v0.5.1 on 29 October (30). Fourteen changelog entries since 19 August 2026 and CLI tags on 6 and 7 August and 28 and 29 October (20). A public changelog, api@kraken.com, a status page and a CLI repository merging pull requests at the end of October; issue replies not read (11 of 15). An official Rust SDK pushed in October 2026 and a Go module from January; the MCP server is not in the official registry (12 of 15). The CLI has release and secure SDLC workflows, deny.toml and a pinned toolchain; the SDK's CI not read (8 of 10). 30 + 20 + 11 + 12 + 8 = 81.

### Schema & documentation: Kraken API +15

- Coinbase MCP server (Coinbase for Agents) (65): No public tool manifest. `tools/list` answered 401 without a token, so the JSON Schema of the 29 tools couldn't be read. The docs say the tool schemas carry field descriptions and enums, and the companion CLI's bundled command spec types every parameter. Dated Coinbase for Agents entries in the CDP changelog and a versioned guide (0.2.3), but no server version is published and the October changes have no changelog entry (12 of 15).
- Kraken API (80): No OpenAPI file was found for the REST API in the docs read; the CLI's agents/tool-catalog.json gives JSON Schema inputs for all 188 commands and the 152 MCP tools (15 of 25). The docs serve Markdown twins such as quickstart.md and the CLI ships llms.txt, AGENTS.md and CONTEXT.md (10). Endpoint pages and guides on order lifecycle, errors and rate limits say what each call does, with less on when not to use one (15 of 20). Enums for order types, time in force and flags, and enums and required fields in the tool catalogue (12 of 15). Python, Node.js and cURL examples, an errors guide and the CLI's error-catalog.json with retry guidance (13 of 15). A changelog of 120 dated entries with deprecations dated (15). 15 + 10 + 15 + 12 + 13 + 15 = 80.

### Agent ergonomics: Kraken API +13

- Coinbase MCP server (Coinbase for Agents) (66): Graded on the remote server. 29 tools per the docs, with no toolsets or read-only subset documented (15). `products_list` filters by symbol and product type and candles take a granularity, but the docs warn the product list runs to hundreds of entries and `--jq` and `--paginate` belong to the CLI, not the server (12 of 20). Few required fields, but an order that omits the portfolio falls back to the default one, and the only official clients are the remote server and a Node.js CLI (10 of 15).
- Kraken API (79): The MCP server loads services with -s, defaults to no live trading, and its 152 tool definitions average about 520 characters; the REST API takes count, limit and pair filters but has no field selection (18 of 25). Cursor pagination on ledgers and trades since 30 September and 6 October 2026, with ofs deprecated (17 of 20). Prefixed error strings such as EOrder:Rate limit exceeded and EAPI:Invalid nonce, and the CLI's error catalogue says which to retry (17 of 20). cl_ord_id and validate on orders, destructive_hint and elicitation on dangerous MCP tools, no idempotency key on REST (16 of 20). An official Rust SDK at 5 stars, a Go module and example clients, HMAC-SHA512 signing with a strict nonce (11 of 15). 18 + 17 + 17 + 16 + 11 = 79.

### Reliability: Kraken API +12

- Coinbase MCP server (Coinbase for Agents) (55): Graded with the hosted lines, on the remote server at agents.coinbase.com. status.coinbase.com is a Statuspage site with Advanced Trade, API, US Derivatives and Developer Platform components and 90 days of history, but no component for the agents MCP server, so it shows the trading back end and not the server agents call. Judgement call (10 of 20). Its first history page, 1 August to 24 October 2026, shows minor incidents for derivatives positions and portfolio transfers and one major, a two-minute website slowdown on 14 October, with none for Advanced Trade order entry; 26 to 31 July sits on a second page we didn't read (20). The setup guide says it specifies no numeric request quota for the remote server and that Advanced Trade limits are not the MCP limit (0). It says to honour Retry-After on 429 or back off with jitter, orders take a `client_order_id` that returns the existing order on retry, and x402 payments take an `idempotency_key` (15). No SLA found (0). Nothing labels the remote server beta or preview (10).
- Kraken API (67): Read with the hosted lines on the spot API. status.kraken.com is a Statuspage site with REST, WebSocket and FIX components (20). The incidents feed read covers 4 September to 3 November 2026. On 30 October spot and derivatives clients could not connect or submit orders across web, mobile, REST, WebSocket and FIX for 59 minutes 39 seconds, rated minor by Kraken; on 28 October some FIX clients were rejected on reconnection for 1 hour 59 minutes while other interfaces worked; the futures engine was degraded for 3 minutes on 13 October. A whole-exchange order outage 21 seconds short of an hour is read as one major (10 of 30). Numeric limits per key by tier and per pair for the matching engine (15). EAPI:Rate limit exceeded and EService:Throttled with a retry timestamp, a client order id and a validate flag on orders, but no Retry-After header (12 of 15). No SLA (0). Generally available (10). 20 + 10 + 15 + 12 + 0 + 10 = 67.

### Security & auth: Kraken API +10

- Coinbase MCP server (Coinbase for Agents) (70): Coinbase OAuth with authorisation code and PKCE S256, `resource` on every request, DCR and CIMD limited to allowlisted clients, ten `mcp:*` scopes, a consent screen where the person picks portfolios, and revocation under Account > Security > Connections (30).
- Kraken API (80): Keys with nine named permissions, optional expiry, IP restriction and nonce window, plus an OAuth sign-in from the CLI (authorisation code with PKCE, public client) that mints a no-withdrawal key expiring within 90 days or a read-only key (30). 30 + 18 + 10 + 6 + 16 = 80.

## Score by category

| Category | Weight | Coinbase MCP server (Coinbase for Agents) | Kraken API | Edge |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Reliability | 16% (20 this run) | 55 | 67 | Kraken API +12 |
| Performance | 10%, pending | pending | pending | not scored in this run |
| Schema & documentation | 13% (16.2 this run) | 65 | 80 | Kraken API +15 |
| Agent ergonomics | 13% (16.2 this run) | 66 | 79 | Kraken API +13 |
| Security & auth | 14% (17.5 this run) | 70 | 80 | Kraken API +10 |
| Payments & pricing | 10% (12.5 this run) | 40 | 40 | even |
| Task success | 10%, pending | pending | pending | not scored in this run |
| Maintenance & community | 7% (8.8 this run) | 58 | 81 | Kraken API +23 |
| Transparency & trust | 7% (8.8 this run) | 62 | 65 | Kraken API +3 |
| Negative events | ≤15 | 0 | 0 | |
| **Total** | | **60 · C** | **71 · BB** | |

## Facts side by side

| Fact | Coinbase MCP server (Coinbase for Agents) | Kraken API |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Kind | MCP server | HTTP API |
| Vendor | Coinbase, Inc. | Payward, Inc. |
| Hosted endpoint | `https://agents.coinbase.com/mcp` | no (local only) |
| Transports | Streamable HTTP, stdio | stdio |
| Auth | OAuth | OAuth or key |
| Pricing | Free | Pay per use |
| x402 | payer tooling only | no |
| Licence | Proprietary hosted service under Coinbase's account terms, which we couldn't read. Only allowlisted clients can connect, the tool schemas aren't public, no rate limit is published and no server-side limit on order size is documented.

**Kraken API.** Kraken pairs a documented REST, WebSocket and FIX API with the open-source kraken-cli, whose kraken-mcp server gates 33 dangerous tools behind approval and signs in by OAuth with a no-withdrawal key. Spot has no self-service sandbox, no OpenAPI file was found, and a 59-minute connectivity outage hit every interface on 30 October 2026.

## Before you call either

### Coinbase MCP server (Coinbase for Agents)

1. Call `coinbase_portfolios_list` first and name the portfolio on every order; an order without one falls back to the default portfolio and fails if it isn't granted
2. Send a fresh `client_order_id` with each order and reuse it on retry, so a dropped connection doesn't place a second order
3. Preview with `coinbase_orders_preview` and confirm with the person before `coinbase_orders_create`; equity previews may be unavailable
4. Use `ETH-USDC`-style pairs when buying with a USDC balance, and `base_size` in contracts for futures
5. Agree a spending budget before `coinbase_x402_fetch`, set `max_amount`, and keep the `idempotency_key` for any retry; settled payments can't be reversed

### Kraken API

1. Start kraken-mcp with -s market, paper, feedback or the default services; add trade only with a least-privilege key, and never pass --allow-dangerous on an agent that reads untrusted input
2. Ask the person to run kraken auth login in their own terminal; it needs a browser and saves a no-withdrawal key that expires in 90 days at most
3. Send a fresh --cl-ord-id on each order and run it with --validate first; after a network error look the order up before sending it again
4. Keep the nonce strictly increasing per key and stay under the tier's counter, since EAPI:Rate limit exceeded has no Retry-After header
5. Test strategies in a paper workspace, which fills at live prices with no account, before a live workspace

## Questions

### Which is better for AI agents, Coinbase MCP server (Coinbase for Agents) or Kraken API?

Kraken API scores 71 (BB) on agent readiness against Coinbase MCP server (Coinbase for Agents)'s 60 (C), and leads in 6 of 7 scored categories.

### Do Coinbase MCP server (Coinbase for Agents) and Kraken API need an API key?

Coinbase MCP server (Coinbase for Agents) uses an OAuth sign-in.
