Checkpoints restore files and task state, sessions resume by ID, and API errors and empty responses are retried (18). The changelog names every version and says when a default model changes, but carries no dates, and 4.0.0 listed its removals under Changed rather than a breaking section. CLI 3.0.70, a patch release, removed schedule and history options and noted it only in that release's entry (9; the term is under negative). Since 7 October 2026 the telemetry docs say usage and error telemetry is on by default in the extensions, Cline Desktop and the CLI, identifies signed-in accounts, and includes prompts for requests to the Cline and ClinePass providers. Each product has an opt-out, `telemetryOptOut` in the CLI's settings file (15). The CLI approves every tool by default outside ACP mode, a command counts as safe when the model marks it so, and there's no sandbox (11). No prompt-injection guidance found in the docs (4). Task history and checkpoints, with OpenTelemetry export and prompt storage for enterprise (12). A valid security.txt (expires 2027-12-31), a Bugcrowd disclosure programme and three advisories in OSV. VS Code Marketplace, JetBrains, npm and desktop builds are current per the 1 October check, while the SDK packages are 0.2.0 (26 October) (13). Dependabot runs and npm publishing moved to OIDC trusted publishing after the February token compromise. CI pass state per the 1 October check (9).",

A dated public changelog, a support address, Discord and a subreddit, with no public tracker to read reply times (8). No official SDK or MCP server to keep current (0). No public packages or CI to judge (3). 30+20+8+0+3 = 61."

Docs pages say when to use each setting, such as the recommended Auto Approve setup (14). `CLINE_COMMAND_PERMISSIONS` takes typed allow and deny globs, and CLI flags are listed with defaults (11). CLI samples, SDK examples and the API errors page (13). A versioned changelog without dates, with dated tags on GitHub (11).",
"b": "Framework reading for a harness. No schema for settings or output, only mcp.json examples in the standard mcpServers shape (5). Every current docs page has a Markdown twin at the same path with .md, though no llms.txt (10). The docs say when to use Agent Mode or Plan Mode and what Plan Mode can't do, but the Agent Mode page lists the actions that need approval only as \"certain tool executions\" and \"destructive operations\" (12). Modes and BYOA agent types are enumerated, permissions are not (5). Examples on the MCP, BYOA and messaging pages, and a recovery page, with no error codes (8). Version numbers and a dated public changelog (15). The archived 1.0 docs are still served beside the current ones. 5+10+12+5+8+15 = 55."

Many built-in tools (files, terminal, browser, MCP, subagents, plan and act), with MCP servers switched on or off per server, and no tool search or lazy loading found (15). `--timeout` (off by default), a mistake limit through `--retries`, automatic compaction and an output budget scaled to the model (14). `--json` writes one JSON object per message, but we found no documented exit codes (12). Checkpoints restore files and task state, sessions resume by ID, and API errors and empty responses are retried (18). The CLI defaults to Cline's own provider and to approving every tool, and the SDK is TypeScript only (8).\n- Verdent (35): Harness reading. MCP servers per project or globally, subagents, skills and rules, but no per-tool disabling or deferred loading found (10). No output-size, turn-limit or budget controls for a run were found beyond credit balances (5). No exit codes or error format, since there is no headless mode (3). Parallel workers in git worktrees and a review column make runs reviewable and reversible, with no resume by ID documented (10). No CLI, API or SDK. A pipeline can only reach Manager through a paired Telegram, Slack or Feishu bot (7). 10+5+3+10+7 = 35.\n\n### Payments \u0026 pricing: Cline +30\n\n- Cline (50): No payment protocol (0). Scored on Cline's paid options. ClinePass is $9.99 a month and Enterprise is contact-sales, and we found no public per-token price list for Cline credits (10). The open-source extension and CLI need no card (20). Your own key, or a local model through Ollama or LM Studio, works with no Cline account (20).\n- Verdent (20): Harness reading of the published rubric, scored on the Verdent subscription the agent needs. No payment protocol (0). Plan prices from $5 a month, top-up prices and the credit value of about $0.059 are public without a login (20). Free Mode and the free trial ended on 29 October 2026, so there is no free tier (0). A person signs up in a browser (0). 0+20+0+0 = 20.\n\n### Reliability: Cline +27\n\n- Cline (70): Read as a local package. The `cline` CLI on npm (Node 22 or later), the VS Code extension (VS Code 1.101 or later), a JetBrains plugin and desktop builds (20). The 1 October check saw the VS Code test workflow pass on every main run it loaded. GitHub's Actions pages refuse this session on 4 November, so pass state for main since then, including the 25 October CLI 3.0.74 and extension 4.1.26 releases, is unread (15, as node-red). 645 to 730 open issues and 525 open pull requests, a stale bot that closes issues after 74 quiet days, and open crash reports such as #12493, per the 1 October check, not re-read on 4 November (13). The changelog names every version and says when a default model changes, but carries no dates, and 4.0.0 listed its removals under Changed rather than a breaking section. CLI 3.0.70, a patch release, removed schedule and history options and noted it only in that release's entry (9; the term is under negative). Extension 4.1.26 and CLI 3.0.74 are past 1.0, while the SDK (0.2.0) and desktop app (0.0.49) aren't (13).\n- Verdent (43): Local-package reading, as for the other closed-source harnesses. The desktop app installs from verdent.ai with macOS 11 or later and 64-bit Windows 10 and 11 stated, and the extension from the editor marketplaces, but not from a package registry (15). No public CI or test suite, since the source isn't published (0). No public issue tracker, every task runs through Verdent's servers, and no status page was found, so there is no readable record (5). A dated changelog by version, with the end of Free Mode called out in v2.18.0, but no breaking-change sections (8). 2.18.0, generally available (15). 15+0+5+8+15 = 43.\n\n### Security \u0026 auth: Cline +24\n\n- Cline (57): Harness reading of the framework checklist, used for all five harnesses in the 1 October batch. 30 for what leaves the machine by default, 20 for approvals and sandboxing, 15 for prompt-injection posture, 15 for audit and 20 for the security programme. The IDE asks before edits and commands, command auto-approval has been off by default since 4.0.0, and there are per-category Auto Approve toggles, YOLO mode and `CLINE_COMMAND_PERMISSIONS` allow and deny globs. GHSA-3cj3-hqcr-g934 now lists 3.0.30 as patched, and GHSA-5c57-rqjx-35g2 lists 2.13.0 as the last affected version (15).\n- Verdent (33): Framework reading (telemetry defaults, approvals, guardrails, sandboxing). Conversation history and tool results go to Verdent's US servers and on to Azure, Bedrock or Vertex, with zero data retention stated for Vertex and Bedrock only. Event logging to log.verdent.ai has no documented opt-out. BYOA keys stay on the machine (10). Plan Mode is read-only, Agent Mode asks before destructive commands and edits outside scope, and workers are isolated by git worktree, but there is no sandbox or network control and the approval list isn't enumerated (9). No prompt-injection guidance found, while web search and fetch results enter the context (2). Usage history in the dashboard, no audit log found (5). A security page with a disclosure address and a five-day acknowledgement, SOC 2 and ISO/IEC 42001 being pursued rather than held, no security.txt and no bug bounty (7). 10+9+2+5+7 = 33.\n\n### Maintenance \u0026 community: Cline +24\n\n- Cline (85): CLI 3.0.74 and extension 4.1.26 on 2026-10-25, 10 days before this check (30). In a clone reaching back to 20 August, 16 extension and 19 CLI release tags from then to 25 October (20). Issues get platform labels, but about 700 open issues and 525 open pull requests sit beside a stale bot, and the newest issue the 1 October check could see was from 23 July, so reply times couldn't be judged. GitHub's issue pages refuse this session on 4 November (13). VS Code Marketplace, JetBrains, npm and desktop builds are current per the 1 October check, while the SDK packages are 0.2.0 (26 October) (13). Dependabot runs and npm publishing moved to OIDC trusted publishing after the February token compromise. CI pass state per the 1 October check (9).\n- Verdent (61): Closed service. v2.18.0 on 29 October 2026, eight days before this check (30). More than three dated releases in the 90 days from 8 August, among them 2.10.0 to 2.18.0 (20). A dated public changelog, a support address, Discord and a subreddit, with no public tracker to read reply times (8). No official SDK or MCP server to keep current (0). No public packages or CI to judge (3). 30+20+8+0+3 = 61.\n\n### Schema \u0026 documentation: Cline +22\n\n- Cline (77): A typed TypeScript SDK with a reference section, a documented one-object-per-line format for `--json`, and an errors page for the Cline API, but no machine-readable spec for the CLI or its config (18). llms.txt at docs.cline.bot, listing a Markdown version of every page (10). A versioned changelog without dates, with dated tags on GitHub (11).\n- Verdent (55): Framework reading for a harness. 5+10+12+5+8+15 = 55.\n\n## Score by category\n\n| Category | Weight | Cline | Verdent | Edge |\n| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |\n| Reliability | 16% (20 this run) | 70 | 43 | Cline +27 |\n| Performance | 10%, pending | pending | pending | not scored in this run |\n| Schema \u0026 documentation | 13% (16.2 this run) | 77 | 55 | Cline +22 |\n| Agent ergonomics | 13% (16.2 this run) | 67 | 35 | Cline +32 |\n| Security \u0026 auth | 14% (17.5 this run) | 57 | 33 | Cline +24 |\n| Payments \u0026 pricing | 10% (12.5 this run) | 50 | 20 | Cline +30 |\n| Task success | 10%, pending | pending | pending | not scored in this run |\n| Maintenance \u0026 community | 7% (8.8 this run) | 85 | 61 | Cline +24 |\n| Transparency \u0026 trust | 7% (8.8 this run) | 65 | 55 | Cline +10 |\n| Negative events | ≤15 | -14 | -2 | |\n| **Total** | | **52.8 · D** | **39.7 · E** | |\n\n## Facts side by side\n\n| Fact | Cline | Verdent |\n| --- | --- | --- |\n| Kind | Agent harness | Agent harness |\n| Vendor | Cline Bot Inc. | Verdent AI, Inc. |\n| Hosted endpoint | no (local only) | no (local only) |\n| Transports | | |\n| Auth | OAuth or key | OAuth or key |\n| Pricing | Freemium | Paid |\n| x402 | no | no |\n| Licence | Apache-2.0 | Proprietary. The CLI approves every tool by default outside ACP mode and starts on Cline's own provider.\n\n**Verdent.** A desktop and editor coding agent that splits a goal into parallel workers in git worktrees, with a read-only Plan Mode, MCP servers and the option to run workers on Claude Code or Codex. It has no CLI, API or sandbox, sends context through Verdent's servers, and has had no free tier since 29 October 2026.\n\n## Before you call either\n\n### Cline\n\n1. Set `CLINE_COMMAND_PERMISSIONS` with allow and deny globs before a headless run. The CLI approves every tool by default\n2. Pick a provider with `-P` and a key, or run `cline auth`. The default provider needs a Cline sign-in\n3. Turn telemetry off before the first task. In the CLI set `telemetryOptOut` to true in `~/.cline/data/settings/global-settings.json`, then run `cline hub stop`\n4. Pin the CLI version. 2.3.0 was a malicious publish\n5. Keep the hub on 127.0.0.1 or set ROOM_SECRET, and run 3.0.30 or later\n6. Pin the CLI version in scripts. Patch releases have removed options that now fail with \"unknown option\"\n\n### Verdent\n\n1. Don't plan to drive Verdent headless. Hand the task to the person using the desktop app, or use a harness with a print mode\n2. Start large changes in Plan Mode and review plan.md before switching to Agent Mode\n3. Add MCP servers in the project's .mcp.json or ~/.verdent/mcp.json in the mcpServers shape\n4. Keep work under git, since rollback relies on git and there is no sandbox\n5. Budget in credits at about $0.059 each, because there is no free allowance since 29 October 2026\n\n## Questions\n\n### Which is better for AI agents, Cline or Verdent?\n\nCline scores 52.8 (D) on agent readiness against Verdent's 39.7 (E), and leads in every scored category.\n\n### Are Cline and Verdent open source?\n\nCline is open source (Apache-2.0).
