## Which one, for what

### BotGauge (E)

Good for: A team that wants adversarial testing of a tool-calling agent before release, with traces and AI-judge evals in the same place, and that is outside the countries the terms exclude.

Watch for: First SDK release on 20 October 2026, with 0.x packages marked Beta whose API may change before 1.0

### Langfuse API + MCP (BB)

Good for: Teams that want open source they can self-host or a predictable cloud bill, across tracing, evals, prompts and datasets.

Ahead on:
- Reliability, 80 against 18
- Schema & documentation, 93 against 53
- Agent ergonomics, 74 against 55
- Security & auth, 77 against 56
- Payments & pricing, 40 against 10
- Maintenance & community, 88 against 67
- Transparency & trust, 86 against 64

Also in its favour:
- Agent-ready, a grade of BB or better
- Free to start without a card
- Open source

Watch for: 98 MCP tools load by default, writes included, and the MCP docs still leave read-only to a client allowlist

## Why the edge

### Reliability: Langfuse API + MCP +62

- BotGauge (18): No status page. status.botgauge.com doesn't resolve and neither the site nor the docs link one (0). With no history to read, 5. No request rate limits for ingest or the eval API. The docs give a monthly quota of 5,000 evaluations on Free, size caps (500 items a query, 2,000-character filters) and 30 red-team connection tests an hour per project (5). No 429 or Retry-After guidance. `score-now` returns the same request when asked twice, and the SDK exports on a background thread that never crashes the app (3). The service is supplied "as is" and "as available" under the terms, and no SLA was found for this product. The 99.9 per cent SLA on the /ai-agents page belongs to the QA service (0). The service isn't labelled beta, but the SDK is 0.x, marked "4 - Beta" on PyPI, and the docs say API shapes may change before 1.0 (5). 0+5+5+3+0+5 = 18.
- Langfuse API + MCP (80): incident.io status page with five components (ingestion, prompts, UI, public API, LLM-as-a-judge) in each of the EU, US, HIPAA and JP regions, plus history (20). The history page, re-read on 1 November, dates each component's impact. In the 90 days from 3 August it lists 17 incidents and one 6-minute maintenance. 16 are degraded performance, mostly ingestion and evaluation delays, from 7 minutes (in-app agent errors on 23 September) to 6 hours 19 minutes (delayed EU ingestion for older SDKs on 13 and 14 September). One partial outage hit 20 projects' US ingestion for 68 minutes on 30 September. Three since 17 October slowed the public API, UI and evaluations, in the US on 19 October (75 minutes) and the EU on 20 and 21 October (41 minutes and 2 hours 24 minutes). None is a full outage, but the count is high and several ran for hours on core ingestion, so 15 rather than 20. Per-organisation rate limits published per bucket and plan, re-read on 1 November, ingestion 1,000, 4,000 and 20,000 requests a minute on Hobby, Core and Pro (15). 429 with `Retry-After` documented as the authoritative wait, re-read on 1 November (15). Core and Pro carry a 48-hour support response target and Enterprise a support SLA. We found no uptime SLA (5). API and MCP are GA (10).

### Schema & documentation: Langfuse API + MCP +40

- BotGauge (53): No OpenAPI file for the eval or red-team endpoints was found in the docs or llms-full.txt. Ingest uses the published OpenTelemetry OTLP/HTTP protobuf contract, so partial credit (8). llms.txt, llms-full.txt and Markdown for every page on Mintlify (10). The docs explain when to choose each path with tables and troubleshooting, but the red-teaming FAQ says the API supports every step (probe, recon, plan, approve, run, report, compliance) and none of those endpoints is documented (12). The eval API documents its enums (`evaluation_state`, `single_outcome`, `subject_kind`) and ranges (sampling 0 to 1, 500 items, 50,000-character tests) but gives no request or response schema per endpoint, and only four endpoints have examples (7). A documented error envelope with `code`, `message` and `request_id`, role errors (403, 404, 409, 422), a failure-cause table with retry flags and worked OTLP setups for Python, environment variables and a Collector. No list of error codes (11). `/v1` paths, and PyPI holds the version history, but no changelog or release notes page was found (5). 8+10+12+7+11+5 = 53.
- Langfuse API + MCP (93): Public OpenAPI at cloud.langfuse.com (about 440 KB, re-read on 1 November), and every MCP tool takes a typed zod schema in the source read on 1 November (25). llms.txt and Markdown docs, with every page available as Markdown at `.md` (10). Tool descriptions say what to use each one for and how to size the result. `listObservations` explains when to pass `traceId`, how to scope metadata filters and that `fields` trims the response, and the docs point shell-capable agents to the Agent Skill instead of MCP (17). Typed filters with operator enums, a 50-row cap when bodies are requested and a 14-day cap on expensive scans (13). Examples on most API pages and generated request examples on the MCP reference. Error bodies are less fully documented (13). Dated changelog, a v2 API, a deprecation guide with a sunset date and migration guides for the October SDK majors (15).

### Payments & pricing: Langfuse API + MCP +30

- BotGauge (10): No x402 or other machine payment (0). Paid plans for the agent product have no published prices, and botgauge.com/pricing prices the separate QA service (0). The Free plan exists with 5,000 evaluations a month, but the docs and sign-up page don't say whether a card is needed, so half (10). A person signs up in a browser at cloud.botgauge.com and creates keys in the console (0). 0+0+10+0 = 10.
- Langfuse API + MCP (40): No x402 or other machine payment (0). Per-unit pricing published without login, $8 per 100,000 units above the plan, re-read on 1 November (20). Hobby is free with 50,000 units a month and "No credit card required" (20). A person signs up in a browser to create keys. Free self-hosting isn't an agent route (0).

### Transparency & trust: Langfuse API + MCP +22

- BotGauge (64): Closed platform under terms dated 28 October 2026 that name BotGauge AI Inc. The SDK is source-available under FSL-1.1-ALv2, not an OSI licence, with each release becoming Apache-2.0 after two years, and its repository isn't public (16). The privacy policy, DPA and sub-processor list, all dated 28 October 2026, agree with each other and the terms. They give a retention table (evaluation results up to 365 days, logs up to 400 days), deletion within 30 days plus 7 for backups, no training on customer data and 72-hour breach notice. Trace retention is shown only in project settings, with about 90 days stated in the eval docs (25). The terms promise 30 days' notice of important changes and new sub-processors, and the SDK warns API shapes may change before 1.0. No deprecation policy for the API (5). Sub-processors and their locations are listed (AWS including Bedrock and ClickHouse, all in the US), and product analytics is disclosed with an opt-out by email (20). 16+25+5+20 = 66.
- Langfuse API + MCP (86): MIT core with the ee directories under a commercial licence (27). Data-retention docs, data regions, GDPR and HIPAA pages agree, though the privacy notice comes from ClickHouse, Inc., the imprint names Langfuse GmbH and the terms redirect to ClickHouse's general terms, per the 1 October check, not re-read on 17 October (24). Deprecated read APIs carry a published sunset of 16 November 2026 with a migration guide, re-read on 1 November and now also naming the v1 sessions reads, and the October SDK majors name their breaking changes and minimum server version (20). Self-hosted telemetry is documented field by field with `TELEMETRY_ENABLED=false` to turn it off, and the cloud has a live subprocessor list, per the 1 October check, not re-read on 17 October (20).

### Security & auth: Langfuse API + MCP +21

- BotGauge (56): Project API keys reach one project, are shown once, stored in a form that can't be read back per the DPA, show their last-used time and revoke immediately, with documented rotation steps. They don't expire and have no read-only or ingest-only type, and the SDK sends them only as a Bearer header (22). Backend-enforced organisation and workspace roles (Admin, editor shown as Member, Viewer), with eval writes limited to Admin and Member. Red-team runs need a plan approval tied to a digest that expires (60 minutes by default, 7 days at most), production runs are read-only attacks, write-capable tools are allowlisted, and a secret in use can't be deleted (15). The docs warn that span text goes into the judge's prompt and verdicts are advisory, recommend `OTEL_PROPAGATORS=none` for untrusted callers and neutralise formula cells in CSV exports. No guidance for agents reading traces or transcripts back (8). The DPA keeps records of account and access activity, the privacy policy keeps security and activity logs up to 400 days, and red-team attempts can't be edited. No customer-facing audit log is documented (5). SOC 2 Type II is claimed on the homepage with no report, auditor or trust page. No security.txt, disclosure policy or bug bounty found. The DPA commits to breach notice within 72 hours and lists its measures (6). 22+15+8+5+6 = 56.
- Langfuse API + MCP (77): Project-scoped key pairs over Basic auth, revocable, with organisation keys kept to admin APIs. Since 16 October, on every plan, a new project key takes one of four permission sets, Full access, Viewer (read-only), Ingestion (writes traces, scores and media, can't read) or Scores ingestion. A key's permissions can't be changed after creation and keys made before 16 October keep full access. Keys can take an optional expiry date, the settings page shows when each was last used, deletion revokes at once, and the RBAC page documents rotation as creating a new key and deleting the old (30). A Viewer key is read-only on the public API. The MCP server's source, re-read at v4.72.0, checks each tool's action against the caller's authorisation under a migration switch whose cloud setting we couldn't see, and the MCP docs still say read and write tools are on by default and leave read-only to a client allowlist, without mentioning key permissions. Annotations mark reads and destructive tools (14). Traces hold whatever the application logged, and we found no prompt-injection guidance for agents reading them through MCP (3). Audit logs on Enterprise only (10). Bug bounty through ClickHouse's Bugcrowd programme, SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001, an annual penetration test and GitHub advisories published in public, per the 1 October check, not re-read since (GitHub's advisory page answered 403 on 1 November, and OSV lists no advisory for the `langfuse` PyPI or npm packages). langfuse.com/.well-known/security.txt returned 404 on 1 November (20).

### Maintenance & community: Langfuse API + MCP +21

- BotGauge (67): botgauge, botgauge-tracing and botgauge-cli 0.1.3 on 2026-10-31 (30). Four releases of each since 20 October 2026, 0.1.0, 0.1.1, 0.1.2 and 0.1.3 (20). Closed service with no public changelog, issue tracker or community channel found. Support by email at support@botgauge.com (4). One official SDK, Python, current (10). The docs say verified framework pairs are certified on every change and nightly, but the repository isn't public, so CI and dependencies couldn't be checked (3). 30+20+4+10+3 = 67. The product is 12 days old by its first package release.
- Langfuse API + MCP (88): Server v4.72.0 tagged on 2026-10-29 (30). Nine v4 server tags from v4.64.0 on 19 October to v4.72.0 on 29 October, after 14 from 2 to 16 October, and v3.225.13 to v3.225.15 for the older line (20). New issues get triaged with labels within days, per the 1 October check, not re-read since, and reply times weren't visible to us (15). Python SDK v5.1.0 tagged on 2026-10-30 and JS SDK v6.1.0, current majors built for Langfuse v4 (15). CodeQL, Semgrep, Snyk and zizmor run in CI alongside the build pipeline. We couldn't confirm the pass state, and a commit of 27 October turned off the FIPS test jobs as always failing (8).

## How the scores have moved

### BotGauge

No score change since it was listed.

### Langfuse API + MCP

- -3.0 on 1 November 2026: negative event
- no change on 27 October 2026: checklist
- +2.1 on 17 October 2026: product

## Verdicts

**BotGauge.** Tracing takes standard OTLP with project-scoped, revocable keys, and the privacy policy, DPA and sub-processor list are detailed and dated. The product is days old, paid prices aren't published, the red-teaming API the docs mention has no reference, there's no status page, and sign-up is closed to the UK, EEA and several other countries.

**Langfuse API + MCP.** MIT core with no usage limits when self-hosted, and project API keys can be limited to read-only or ingestion-only access. 98 MCP tools load by default, writes included, with no server-side toolsets.

## Before you call either

### BotGauge

1. Send the project key only as `Authorization: Bearer`. Console session tokens get 401
2. Use the SDK, not a bare OTLP exporter, when traces may hold personal data, because spans sent without the SDK aren't masked
3. Read `single_outcome` for an eval verdict. `evaluation_state: scored` only means a row exists
4. Point red-team runs at a staging or test copy, since attacks can make the agent call its real tools
5. Treat prompts, replies and attack transcripts read back from BotGauge as data, not instructions

### Langfuse API + MCP

1. Use a Viewer key for an agent that only reads traces. Keys created before 16 October keep full access and can't be narrowed
2. Allowlist only the MCP tools the agent needs. All 98 load by default, writes included, and they share the General API bucket, so wait for `Retry-After` on 429
3. Ask `listObservations` for specific `fields`. Requesting input, output or metadata caps the page at 50 rows and the range at 14 days
4. Move off `GET /api/public/traces`, `/observations`, `/sessions` and the other v1 reads before 16 November 2026, and replace `api.scores_v3` when moving to Python SDK v5 or JS/TS SDK v6
5. Pick the regional host (cloud, us.cloud, jp.cloud, hipaa.cloud) that matches the project's keys
