## Which one, for what

### Bitfinex API (C)

Good for: An agent trading spot, margin or derivatives, or lending on the funding market, with scoped keys, official clients and paper trading.

Ahead on:
- Reliability, 85 against 50
- Schema & documentation, 48 against 42
- Agent ergonomics, 61 against 50
- Security & auth, 62 against 54
- Maintenance & community, 41 against 29

Watch for: No official MCP server, OpenAPI file or AsyncAPI file; the registry's Bitfinex servers are third parties proxying public market data

### Crypto.com Exchange API (D)

Good for: An agent trading spot or perpetuals on Crypto.com through a local MCP server with safety tiers, for a person outside the App's restricted list.

Ahead on:
- Transparency & trust, 55 against 49

Also in its favour:
- Runs on your own machine

Watch for: exchange-docs.crypto.com and the OpenAPI host answered 403 to robots.txt, so rate limits, key permissions, errors and the changelog could not be read

## Why the edge

### Reliability: Bitfinex API +35

- Bitfinex API (85): Read with the hosted lines on the v2 API at api.bitfinex.com. bitfinex.statuspage.io is a Statuspage site with history back to May 2021 (20). Its feed has no entry between 25 March 2026 and 3 November 2026, so the last 90 days are clean on the record; the feed logs platform-wide outages only (a 14-hour maintenance in March 2026, a 3-hour outage in August 2025), so smaller incidents may go unrecorded. Judgement call (30). Rate limits with numbers, 10 to 90 a minute per IP and the WebSocket connection limits (15). `ERR_RATE_LIMIT` and the 60-second block are documented, with no Retry-After; orders take a `cid` but no idempotency key or retry guidance was found (10 of 15). No SLA found (0). Generally available (10). 20 + 30 + 15 + 10 + 0 + 10 = 85.
- Crypto.com Exchange API (50): Read with the hosted lines on the Exchange API at api.crypto.com. status.crypto.com is a Statuspage site with component history (20). Its feed for 18 August to 3 November 2026 has 25 entries; the Exchange is named in two, an 11-minute database upgrade on 18 August and a one-hour balance display issue on 6 October, while the longer disruptions (Android login on 1 and 5 October, card 3DS on 23 September, Main App predictions on 3 November) are App incidents. There is no Exchange API component, so the record may be incomplete. Minor only (20). Rate limits are documented on exchange-docs.crypto.com, which answered 403 to robots.txt and was not read (0, unchecked). 429 handling and client order ids are on the same host (0, unchecked). No SLA found (0). Generally available (10). 20 + 20 + 0 + 0 + 0 + 10 = 50.

### Maintenance & community: Bitfinex API +12

- Bitfinex API (41): Read as a closed service with open clients. The last dated change we could read is bitfinex-api-node 9.1.0 on 18 July 2026, 108 days before the check; the docs changelog stops in October 2024 (10). Not three dated releases in the last 90 days (0). The bitfinexcom organisation pushes often (bfx-report on 3 November 2026) and the clients have issue trackers, but support articles answered 403 and no reply times were read (10 of 25). Official clients current in four languages, Node 9.1.0 of July 2026 and Python 4.0.0 of October 2025; not in the MCP registry (15). The Node client has a dependency history of security fixes (its last GitHub release notes name two) and no CI was read (6 of 10). 10 + 0 + 10 + 15 + 6 = 41.
- Crypto.com Exchange API (29): Read as a closed service with an open CLI. The last change we could date is cdcx-cli v1.2.6 on 18 June 2026, 138 days before the check, with no commit since; the API changelog is unread (10). No three dated releases in the last 90 days (0). Five of six open items on cdcx-cli, all by collaborators or Dependabot since May, have no comment; the Exchange has a support chat and contact@crypto.com (8 of 25). Not in the official MCP registry and no official SDK beyond the CLI (5 of 15). CI tests on three operating systems with clippy and fmt; the npm wrapper's postinstall downloads the binary and two Dependabot bumps are open (6 of 10). 10 + 0 + 8 + 5 + 6 = 29.

### Agent ergonomics: Bitfinex API +11

- Bitfinex API (61): Graded on the REST API. Limits on trades, candles and book depth, and `pub:list` config endpoints keep responses small, but positional arrays make every field a lookup (14 of 25). `start`, `end`, `limit` and `sort` on history endpoints and per-symbol variants (16 of 20). `ERR_RATE_LIMIT` is actionable; authenticated 400s return `{}` and withdrawal status strings may change, so an agent cannot branch on causes (8 of 20). A client id on orders, order multi-op and cancel-multiple, but no idempotency key and no retry contract (8 of 20). Few required parameters and official clients in Node, Python, Go and Ruby (15). 14 + 16 + 8 + 8 + 15 = 61.
- Crypto.com Exchange API (50): Graded on the REST API as an agent calls it, with the MCP server noted. cdcx serves up to 95 tools, more than 30, but the default serves the `market` group alone and groups are enabled one by one, which is a read-only subset switch (5 + 10 = 15). Pagination and output controls for the API are on the unread docs host; cdcx adds `-o json|table|ndjson` (8 of 20). cdcx returns structured JSON errors and the safety gate names what is missing; the API's own error table is unread (8 of 20). cdcx's tiers (mutate needs `acknowledged: true`, dangerous needs `--allow-dangerous`), `--dry-run` and paper trading give safe rehearsal, though no MCP annotations or API idempotency keys were seen (12 of 20). No official SDK beyond the CLI; defaults in cdcx are sensible (7 of 15). 15 + 8 + 8 + 12 + 7 = 50.

### Security & auth: Bitfinex API +8

- Bitfinex API (62): Revocable keys with per-scope read and write flags, a permissions endpoint, 2FA and email confirmation at creation, strictly increasing nonces, and IP binding to 20 addresses per the support article's search text (the article answered 403); no key expiry (24 of 30). `withdraw` and `ui_withdraw` are separate scopes and read-only keys are possible, but the support text says keys from email-and-password accounts start with every permission enabled and no confirmation step is documented for API withdrawals (14 of 20). The API returns exchange data, not third-party text (10). Login history and an account changelog (audit) endpoint are documented (10 of 15). No security.txt, no readable disclosure policy and no certification page readable (4 of 20). 24 + 14 + 10 + 10 + 4 = 62.
- Crypto.com Exchange API (54): HMAC-SHA256 API keys made with 2FA; IP whitelisting and pre-approved withdrawal addresses per the official skill, and revocation from the Exchange settings. The permission list (read, trade, withdraw) is on the unread docs host, so scopes are recorded from the skills (20 of 30). On least privilege, the App skill's key has no withdrawal permission, the Exchange skill requires user confirmation before a production trade, and cdcx refuses withdrawals and cancel-all without `--allow-dangerous`; nothing on the server side limits order size (14 of 20). The tools return exchange data, not third-party text, but no guidance on untrusted content was found (6 of 15). An account audit trail is not documented where we could read (4 of 15). No security.txt on crypto.com; cdcx has a SECURITY.md with private reporting and a three-day acknowledgement, and the organisation keeps HackerOne policy guidelines; certifications were not read (10 of 20). 20 + 14 + 6 + 4 + 10 = 54.

### Schema & documentation: Bitfinex API +6

- Bitfinex API (48): No OpenAPI or AsyncAPI file was found on docs.bitfinex.com, in llms.txt or in the client repositories (0). llms.txt and a .md twin of every docs page (10). Each reference page states the endpoint's purpose and fields, and the introduction says when to use api-pub against api, but nothing says when not to use an endpoint (14 of 20). Responses are positional arrays described in field tables, inputs are typed in prose with some enumerations (wallet names, order types) and required fields marked; the withdrawal CODE field is work in progress (7 of 15). Signed-request recipes in five languages, but authenticated errors are documented as 400 with an empty object and there is no error reference (9 of 15). Version v2 in the path and a dated changelog, whose last entry is October 2024 and whose v1 deprecation has no date (8 of 15). 0 + 10 + 14 + 7 + 9 + 8 = 48.
- Crypto.com Exchange API (42): An OpenAPI spec exists, since cdcx-cli generates its 95 commands and tools from it at run time, but its host (exchange-developer.crypto.com) answered 403 to robots.txt and the spec was not read; the vendor's own tooling is evidence it exists, not of its quality (15 of 25). No llms.txt on crypto.com or the Exchange pages (0). For descriptions, cdcx's tool descriptions come from the spec, which we couldn't read; the Exchange skill documents 52 endpoints in prose (8 of 20). cdcx's README says the tools carry typed parameters and enum validation, a vendor claim not checked against the spec (8 of 15). For examples, the skills and cdcx README carry worked commands, but the API's error codes and response examples sit on the unread host (6 of 15). Versioned path (v1); the API changelog and announcements page could not be read (5 of 15). 15 + 0 + 8 + 8 + 6 + 5 = 42.

### Transparency & trust: Crypto.com Exchange API +6

- Bitfinex API (49): The editorial half. A closed service whose Exchange Terms and API Terms of Service loaded only navigation, so the licence terms are unknown; the clients are MIT and Apache-2.0 (8 of 30). The privacy statement loaded only navigation, so retention and data handling are unchecked (0 of 30). The docs say v1 will be deprecated "at some point in the future" with no date, and the Python client's 4.0.0 removed endpoints with a release note (5 of 20). Subprocessors and data locations are in the unread privacy statement (0). 8 + 0 + 5 + 0 = 13.
- Crypto.com Exchange API (55): The editorial half. A closed service whose terms and trading rules loaded empty for our reader; cdcx and the skills are MIT or Apache-2.0 (10 of 30). The Exchange privacy notice of 12 March 2025 names Foris DAX Limited, gives retention examples (6 years for correspondence, 5 years for EEA AML records) and provider categories, with no DPA or subprocessor list (16 of 30). No deprecation policy or notice period was found (0). Transfers outside the Cayman Islands and the EEA are stated with no countries named (6 of 20). 10 + 16 + 0 + 6 = 32.

## Verdicts

**Bitfinex API.** Bitfinex gives an agent scoped keys with a separate withdraw permission, paper-trading sub-accounts on the production API, llms.txt and official clients in four languages. There is no official MCP server, responses are positional arrays with empty error bodies, rate limits run 10 to 90 a minute per IP, and the terms, API terms and privacy statement could not be read.

**Crypto.com Exchange API.** Crypto.com is one of two exchanges here with an official MCP server, cdcx-cli, whose 95 generated tools are grouped by service and gated by safety tier. The API docs, OpenAPI file, terms and trading rules refused or hid from our reader, so rate limits, key permissions and the automated-trading clauses are unchecked, and cdcx has no release since June 2026.

## Before you call either

### Bitfinex API

1. Mint a key with read on the scopes the task needs and write only on `orders`; never grant `withdraw` to a trading key, and bind the key to known IPs
2. Use one key per client process, since each key keeps its own strictly increasing nonce and a reused nonce is rejected
3. Rehearse on a paper-trading sub-account with the TEST symbols before touching real balances; the sub-account cannot be converted later
4. Plan requests against the per-endpoint limit of 10 to 90 a minute per IP; `ERR_RATE_LIMIT` blocks the IP for 60 seconds with no Retry-After
5. Map each response by position from the docs' field tables and set a `cid` on orders, because responses are arrays and a 400 carries no reason

### Crypto.com Exchange API

1. Enable only the service groups the task needs with `cdcx mcp config --enable trade, account` (the default serves `market` alone), and leave `--allow-dangerous` off unless the person asks for withdrawals or cancel-all
2. Rehearse on `--env uat` or `cdcx paper` first; production keys trade real funds, and the skill requires explicit user confirmation before each live order
3. Put the key in CDCX_API_KEY and CDCX_API_SECRET or `~/.config/cdcx/config.toml` at 0600; there is no key flag, and the key should have no withdrawal permission and an IP allow-list
4. Pass `acknowledged: true` on mutate tools and `--dry-run` while testing; read the tool's generated schema before calling, since the docs host is unreadable to agents without a browser
5. Check the person's country against Crypto.com's geo-restriction article and the Exchange terms before trading; New York and about 70 countries are excluded from the App, and the Exchange list was unreadable
