Default limits published per service, 500 requests a second for search, 250 for reverse geocoding and 50 for routing, on the limits page re-read on 1 November (15). The service answers 429 over the limit and doesn't bill 429, 408 or 5xx responses, and data-plane calls are reads, so a retry is safe. No Retry-After header or backoff guidance was found in the reviewed documentation (6 of 15). The SLA for Online Services of 1 October 2026 commits to 99.9 per cent per API, with 10 and 25 per cent credits, per the 8 October check (10). Search 2026-01-01 and Route 2025-01-01 are stable versions. The REST index still labels autocomplete a preview (10). 20+20+15+6+10+10 = 81.
Hosted lines. incident.io status page at status.geocod.io with five components (Geocodio API, Dashboard, Enterprise API, Enterprise Dashboard, Website) and an incidents feed at /api/v2/incidents.json (20). In the 90 days to 6 November 2026 the feed lists one incident marked major, 'Spreadsheet geocoding jobs are failing' on 27 October from 12:35 to 15:15 UTC, and a PHP security patch on 21 October marked no impact, so one major outage of a core feature (10). 1,000 requests a minute on single geocoding for pay-as-you-go and Flex, 100 on Enterprise Flex (15). 429 carries X-RateLimit-Remaining, -Limit and -Period, and llms.txt and AGENTS.md give a retry rule per status code with capped backoff, plus client-side idempotency guidance for the non-idempotent list and batch writes (15). The pricing page lists custom SLAs as an add-on on Unlimited and Enterprise plans, with no published terms, so no SLA (0). GA (10). 20+10+15+15+0+10 = 70."

Operation descriptions state purpose, and the geocoding and migration pages say when to use geocoding, autocomplete or batch and when not to (16 of 20). Typed parameters with ranges such as `top` from 1 to 20, 18 enums in the Search document and 48 in Route, and required fields marked (13 of 15). Examples on all 16 Search and Route operations, but errors are one default response with an `x-ms-error-code` header and no list of codes found (10 of 15). Dated `api-version` values and migration guides for Search, Route, Render and Traffic 1.0, but no API changelog page. The release notes cover the Web SDK only (9 of 15). 25+10+16+13+10+9 = 83.",

Built-in reader roles, custom roles down to one service such as `Microsoft.Maps/accounts/services/search/read`, and `disableLocalAuth` to turn keys off. The data-plane APIs only read. MSRC coordinated disclosure and bounty policies, and Azure Maps is on the FedRAMP High audit scope list dated 21 September 2026. The microsoft.com security.txt passed its Expires date on 23 September 2026 and still carries it on 1 November, and we did not confirm Maps on a SOC 2 scope list. The spec repository's newest Maps API or description changes are from 30 September 2026, removing Render 1.0 after its retirement on 17 September and clarifying autocomplete result types, 32 days before 1 November. The commits since then under the Maps folder (8 and 14 October) only change TypeSpec tooling and linter settings, so they don't count (20). Dated Maps changes since 3 August include description and example fixes on 28 August, 1 September, 14, 16 and 23 September and the two of 30 September, plus the Gen1 pricing retirement on 15 September (20). No API changelog. Microsoft Q&A and a feedback forum are linked from each docs page, which we did not read (8 of 15). The REST client libraries are all beta and lag the service. The azure-sdk changelogs date `azure-maps-search` 2.0.0b2 and `azure-maps-route` 1.0.0b3 to 12 December 2024 and `@azure-rest/maps-search` 2.0.0-beta.4 and `@azure-rest/maps-route` 1.0.0-beta.6 to 22 August 2025, with the next betas unreleased (5 of 15). The libraries live in the azure-sdk monorepos, CI not checked (4 of 10). 20+20+8+5+4 = 57.
- Geocodio (86): API v2.1 released 3 November 2026 (Australia and New Zealand), and PHP library 3.4.1 on 4 November (30). Dated changelog entries on 8 September, 1, 8, 9, 19, 22 and 31 October and 3 November 2026, plus library releases in October (20). Public changelog, support by email and a team-staffed help desk named on the pricing page. We didn't read GitHub issue reply times (12). Official Python 1.6.0 and Node 2.3.0 from 12 October and PHP 3.4.1 from 4 November are current (15). Each library and the CLI run CI on GitHub Actions; we didn't check whether the runs pass (9). 30+20+12+15+9 = 86.

### Payments & pricing: Geocodio +20

- Azure Maps (20): No x402, MPP or L402 (0). Per-1,000-transaction prices are public without a login through the Azure Retail Prices API, $4.50 on each Gen2 meter. The pricing page showed our reader the free amounts but no dollar figures (20), re-read on 1 November. Free monthly transactions exist, 5,000 for search and 1,000 for routing, but an Azure account asks for a card to verify identity (0). A person signs up in a browser and creates the Maps account (0). 0+20+0+0 = 20.
- Geocodio (40): No x402, MPP or L402 (0). $1 per 1,000 lookups after the free tier, and per-credit rates for every Flex tier, public without login (20). 2,500 lookups a day free with no card until usage passes the free tier (20). Signup and key creation are a browser flow at dash.geocod.io (0). 0+20+20+0 = 40.

### Transparency & trust: Geocodio +12

- Azure Maps (75): Closed service under Microsoft's Product Terms, which carry a section of Azure Maps rules on storage, navigation and attribution, with MIT client libraries (15 of 30). The docs say requests and input data are stored only in the chosen geography and that queries go to TomTom without a link to the customer. No retention period for request data was found, and we did not read the Data Protection Addendum (22 of 30). The Modern Lifecycle Policy promises 12 months' notice before support ends. Gen1 pricing and Render 1.0 retired on stated dates in September 2026, while Search 1.0 is superseded with no date (16 of 20). TomTom is named as a subprocessor, and European and United States endpoints fix the data location. The full sub-processor list sits on the Service Trust Portal, which we did not read (16 of 20). 15+22+16+16 = 69.
- Geocodio (87): Editorial half only. Closed service with clear, dated terms under Virginia law, and libraries and CLI under MIT (20). The privacy policy says API and spreadsheet input and results are deleted within 45 days, error logs kept 90 days, and customer data isn't used to train AI models. A separate data retention policy and llms.txt put Lists API data at 72 hours. Results may be stored permanently by the customer (27). Replaced API versions are guaranteed for at least 12 months, breaking changes come only with a new version, and the changelog marks each one 'Breaking' (18). The privacy policy names its processors, such as Sentry and Laravel Nightwatch, and the security page says self-serve is hosted in Europe (15). 20+27+18+15 = 80.

### Reliability: Azure Maps +11

- Azure Maps (81): Hosted reading. Azure status page with a history of post-incident reviews (20). The history, re-read on 1 November, lists two reviews in the 90 days from 3 August and none since 1 October, Azure OpenAI and AI services in Sweden Central on 29 September and gateway services in several regions from 20:30 UTC on 30 September to 02:15 UTC on 1 October. The West US review of 23 July has left the window. None names Azure Maps. The page lists only broad incidents, so there is no service-level history for Maps, and we count the record as minor (20 of 30), as the other Azure listings do.
- Geocodio (70): Hosted lines. incident.io status page at status.geocod.io with five components (Geocodio API, Dashboard, Enterprise API, Enterprise Dashboard, Website) and an incidents feed at /api/v2/incidents.json (20). GA (10). 20+10+15+15+0+10 = 70.

### Schema & documentation: Geocodio +9

- Azure Maps (83): OpenAPI 2.0 documents for each service are public in `Azure/azure-rest-api-specs`, generated from TypeSpec since April 2026 (25). learn.microsoft.com returns each page as Markdown when `?accept=text/markdown` is added, though `llms.txt` returns 404 (10). 25+10+16+13+10+9 = 83.
- Geocodio (92): OpenAPI 3.0.1 spec, version 2.1.0, with 11 paths (25). llms.txt and an AGENTS.md written for agents (10). llms.txt and AGENTS.md say when to use each endpoint and when not to, such as the Lists API over looping single calls, the upload tool for a one-off spreadsheet and straightline over driving distance unless road distance is needed (19). Typed parameters with country values, component fields and documented limits, though `fields` is a comma-separated string (12). Error table with retry guidance, examples throughout, but the spec documents 200, 400, 403, 404, 422 and 424 and not 429 or 500 (11). Versioned paths from v1 to v2.1 and a dated public changelog with entries back to 2024 (15). 25+10+19+12+11+15 = 92.

### Security & auth: Azure Maps +8

- Azure Maps (66): Microsoft Entra ID OAuth tokens with Azure roles, SAS tokens limited to 24 hours with a rate cap and allowed regions, and two subscription keys that can be regenerated in turn (30). Less 10 because the authentication guide tells callers to add the subscription key as a URL parameter, and Search 1.0 declares the key as a query parameter (20). Built-in reader roles, custom roles down to one service such as `Microsoft.Maps/accounts/services/search/read`, and `disableLocalAuth` to turn keys off. The data-plane APIs only read. A subscription key reaches every API on the account (18 of 20). Place names, addresses and traffic incident text come from third parties, and no prompt-injection guidance was found (5 of 15). Azure Monitor metrics show usage, errors and availability for 93 days. Per-request logs were not found in the Azure Maps docs (6 of 15). An MSRC search on 1 November finds no CVE naming Azure Maps since November 2025 (17 of 20). 20+18+5+6+17 = 66.
- Geocodio (58): Revocable keys, five on pay-as-you-go, each with permissions (Lists and Distance off by default), which earns 25. Less 10 because the docs say 'All requests require &api_key=YOUR_API_KEY' and the OpenAPI spec defines only the query scheme, though an Authorization header has worked since March 2025 (15). Per-key permissions limit what a key can reach. DELETE on lists and distance jobs needs no confirmation (13). Results are addresses and government district, census and legislator data rather than user-written text. No prompt-injection guidance found (9). Usage per API key in the dashboard, downloadable as CSV, and billable-lookup headers on every response (8). Valid security.txt to 30 January 2030 with a PGP key and a responsible disclosure policy. SOC 2 Type II and annual penetration tests apply to the Enterprise platform only. No bug bounty found (13). 15+13+9+8+13 = 58.

## Score by category

| Category | Weight | Azure Maps | Geocodio | Edge |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Reliability | 16% (20 this run) | 81 | 70 | Azure Maps +11 |
| Performance | 10%, pending | pending | pending | not scored in this run |
| Schema & documentation | 13% (16.2 this run) | 83 | 92 | Geocodio +9 |
| Agent ergonomics | 13% (16.2 this run) | 73 | 80 | Geocodio +7 |
| Security & auth | 14% (17.5 this run) | 66 | 58 | Azure Maps +8 |
| Payments & pricing | 10% (12.5 this run) | 20 | 40 | Geocodio +20 |
| Task success | 10%, pending | pending | pending | not scored in this run |
| Maintenance & community | 7% (8.8 this run) | 57 | 86 | Geocodio +29 |
| Transparency & trust | 7% (8.8 this run) | 75 | 87 | Geocodio +12 |
| Negative events | ≤15 | 0 | 0 | |
| **Total** | | **67.1 · B** | **72.2 · BB** | |

## Facts side by side

| Fact | Azure Maps | Geocodio |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Kind | HTTP API | HTTP API |
| Vendor | Microsoft | Dotsquare LLC |
| Hosted endpoint | `https://atlas.microsoft.com` | no (local only) |
| Transports | HTTP | HTTP |
| Auth | OAuth or key | API key |
| Pricing | Freemium | Freemium |
| Price for geocoding | $4.50 per 1,000 requests | $1600 per month (plan) |
| x402 | no | no |
| Licence | Proprietary service under Microsoft's Product Terms. Place search exists only in Search 1.0, which the newer version has superseded, and the REST client libraries are all beta.

**Geocodio.** Geocodio publishes llms.txt, an AGENTS.md on cost and retries, an OpenAPI spec and a dated changelog, and its results may be stored permanently. Coverage stops at six countries, there's no MCP server or published SLA for self-serve plans, and the docs still put the key in the query string by default.

## Before you call either

### Azure Maps

1. Send the key in the `subscription-key` header, or use `Authorization: Bearer` with `x-ms-client-id`. The key also works as a URL parameter, which leaks into logs.
2. Call `GET /geocode?api-version=2026-01-01` for addresses. It can return 200 with no results, so check `confidence`, `matchCodes` and the entity type before use.
3. Use Search 1.0 (`/search/poi/json`, `/search/nearby/json`, `/search/fuzzy/json`) for places. The 2026-01-01 version has no place search.
4. Use `eu.atlas.microsoft.com` or `us.atlas.microsoft.com` to keep request data in that geography.
5. Don't store route or tile results beyond six months, and never for serving several users. The product terms allow keeping geocodes while the account is active.

### Geocodio

1. Always set `country`, because an address with none falls back to the US and is billed even when it's wrong
2. Send the key as `Authorization: Bearer`, not in the query string, so it stays out of logs
3. Use batch POST /geocode (up to 10,000 lookups) or the Lists API rather than looping single requests
4. Treat accuracy_type place, county or state as not found, and check `_warnings` for appends that were billed but skipped
5. Don't retry 403 or 422. On 429 read X-RateLimit headers and back off, and never re-upload a list sitting in ENQUEUED

## Questions

### Which is better for AI agents, Azure Maps or Geocodio?

Geocodio scores 72.2 (BB) on agent readiness against Azure Maps's 67.1 (B), and leads in 5 of 7 scored categories. Azure Maps leads on reliability and security & auth.

### Do Azure Maps and Geocodio need an API key?

Azure Maps takes an API key or an OAuth sign-in.
