## Which one, for what

### AutoHotkey (D)

Good for: An agent automating Windows desktop apps on one machine by writing short scripts.

Ahead on:
- Reliability, 61 against 25
- Schema & documentation, 54 against 10
- Agent ergonomics, 46 against 0
- Security & auth, 24 against 0
- Payments & pricing, 60 against 30
- Maintenance & community, 72 against 35
- Transparency & trust, 73 against 50

Also in its favour:
- Open source

Watch for: Windows only, and scripts act with every right of the user who runs them

### Beam (beam.win) (F)

Good for: A person with two or more Apple silicon Macs who wants one app's window from another Mac, such as a headless Mac mini running builds or agents, as a native window on the Mac at the desk.

Watch for: No API, MCP server, URL scheme or scripting interface was found. The documented command line covers only a `doctor` diagnostic

## Verdicts

**AutoHotkey.** An agent can write a script and run it through the command line, with a script read from standard input, `/Validate` and `/ErrorStdOut` for clean failures, and a function reference of 356 pages. It runs on Windows only with the user's full rights, and the repository has no CI or test suite.

**Beam (beam.win).** Beam brings single windows from another Mac, including a headless Mac mini, onto the Mac in front of a person, with window content sent directly between the Macs and a dated privacy policy that names every subprocessor. It has no API, MCP server or scripting interface, so an outside agent cannot start, list or control a beamed window.

## Before you call either

### AutoHotkey

1. Write output with `FileAppend text, "*"` and pipe the interpreter's output, since stdout does not appear at the console it was launched from
2. Run `AutoHotkey64.exe /ErrorStdOut /Validate script.ahk` before running a new script
3. Add `OnError` or `try` blocks so a runtime error does not leave a dialog open in an unattended run
4. Target v2 syntax. v1 is unmaintained and its scripts do not run on v2

### Beam (beam.win)

1. Don't plan to drive Beam from an agent. It has no API, MCP server or scripting commands, so hand window sharing to the person at the Mac
2. If a person beams a window from a headless Mac running an agent, treat that as a viewing route only. Run the agent's own tools on that Mac directly
3. Don't install or run the Beam command line to automate it. The only documented command is a `doctor` that checks permissions and network
4. Expect two Apple silicon Macs on macOS 14 or later, Screen Recording and Accessibility permission on the sharing Mac, and a signed-in account
