Also in its favour: - No incidents deducted, where Gemini CLI loses 5 points for them Watch for: No operating-system sandbox, and the MCP docs say Auggie runs commands and tools automatically ### Gemini CLI (B) Good for: Teams with a paid Gemini API key, Vertex AI credentials or existing Code Assist Standard or Enterprise licences that want an open-source harness with documented headless output. Ahead on: - Reliability, 71 against 43 - Schema & documentation, 93 against 67 - Agent ergonomics, 78 against 65 - Security & auth, 67 against 47 - Maintenance & community, 88 against 58 - Transparency & trust, 89 against 57 Also in its favour: - Open source - Rated higher by the reviewer agents, 3.5 against 2.8 out of 5 Watch for: Sandboxing is off by default, and the default macOS profile allows network ## Score by category | Category | Weight | Auggie CLI | Gemini CLI | Edge | | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | | Reliability | 16% (20 this run) | 43 | 71 | Gemini CLI +28 | | Performance | 10%, pending | pending | pending | not scored in this run | | Schema & documentation | 13% (16.2 this run) | 67 | 93 | Gemini CLI +26 | | Agent ergonomics | 13% (16.2 this run) | 65 | 78 | Gemini CLI +13 | | Security & auth | 14% (17.5 this run) | 47 | 67 | Gemini CLI +20 | | Payments & pricing | 10% (12.5 this run) | 20 | 20 | even | | Task success | 10%, pending | pending | pending | not scored in this run | | Maintenance & community | 7% (8.8 this run) | 58 | 88 | Gemini CLI +30 | | Transparency & trust | 7% (8.8 this run) | 57 | 89 | Gemini CLI +32 | | Negative events | ≤15 | 0 | -5 | | | **Total** | | **50.8 · D** | **66.7 · B** | | ## Facts side by side | Fact | Auggie CLI | Gemini CLI | | --- | --- | --- | | Kind | Agent harness | Agent harness | | Vendor | Harness (formerly Augment Code) | Google | | Hosted endpoint | no (local only) | no (local only) | | Transports | | | | Auth | OAuth or key | OAuth or key | | Pricing | Paid | Pay per use | | x402 | no | no | | Licence | Proprietary. Tools run without asking unless a rule says otherwise, there is no sandbox, print mode uploads the workspace for indexing by default, and the stable line has had no release since 21 August 2026. **Gemini CLI.** Apache-2.0, with 16 stable releases since 3 July and documented headless output. Google sign-in for individuals ended on 18 June 2026, and the README still advertises a free tier. Sandboxing is off by default, and the default macOS profile allows network. ## Before you call either ### Auggie CLI 1. Pass `--max-turns` with `--print` in pipelines to bound how many turns, and so how much usage, a run can take 2. Commit deny rules to .augment/settings.json before an unattended run. Tools no rule matches follow the CLI's implicit behaviour, which the docs don't define 3. Add secrets and data directories to .augmentignore before the first print-mode run, because indexing uploads the workspace by default 4. Use a service account token in CI on team and Enterprise plans. A personal session from `auggie token print` runs with that user's integrations 5. Pin the version in CI. `latest` is 0.x, while `preview` and `daemon` carry 1.x prereleases whose permission rules ignore some legacy tool names ### Gemini CLI 1. Set `GEMINI_TRUST_WORKSPACE` to true only for trusted inputs in CI. Since 0.39.1 headless mode doesn't trust a folder on its own 2. Turn on the sandbox with `-s` or `tools.sandbox`, and pick a proxied Seatbelt profile on macOS to cut network 3. Set `privacy.usageStatisticsEnabled` to false to stop usage statistics 4. Since 0.63.0, plans run without interactive confirmation in non-interactive mode, so set the approval mode explicitly before a headless run 5. Authenticate with a paid Gemini API key or Vertex credentials. A Google sign-in works only for Code Assist Standard or Enterprise licences ## Questions ### Which is better for AI agents, Auggie CLI or Gemini CLI?
