Haiku 5.5 is priced by prompt length, $0.10/$0.50 per million up to 100,000 prompt tokens and $0.50/$2.50 above. US-only inference costs 1.1x. Fast mode on Opus 5.5 costs $8/$40 per million ($10/$50 on Opus 5 and 4.8, still in research preview; fast mode on Opus 4.8 is removed on 30 November 2026). Web search $10 per 1,000, web fetch billed as tokens only, code execution free alongside them or $0.05 per container hour after 1,550 free hours a month (https://platform.claude.com/docs/en/about-claude/pricing).",

Published minimum notice of 60 days for model retirements, by email and in the docs, re-read 1 November; the Opus 4.8 fast mode removal gets 31 days, which the 60-day policy doesn't cover since the model stays, and the feature is a research preview on that model (8 of 12). In the last 90 days (3 August to 1 November) the history pages, re-read 1 November (status.claude.com's robots.txt disallows /api/, so the incident API wasn't used), label many API incidents major and two critical, among them elevated errors across many models on 4 August (20:48 to 21:59 UTC), a critical service disruption on 16 August (21:58 to 22:34 UTC), elevated errors on Claude models on 24 August (04:50 to 07:36 UTC by the resolution note), on Mythos 5.1, Fable 5.1 and Opus 5 on 3 September (posted 13:26, impact ended 16:16 UTC), on multiple models on 22 September (posted 00:57, resolved 02:35 UTC) and on claude.ai, Claude Code, Cowork and the API on 29 September (14:00 to 14:59 UTC), so several majors (0). Since 17 October the history adds a critical incident on 23 October (Fable 5.1, Sonnet 5.5, Haiku 5.5 and fast mode on Opus 5.5, 23:28 to 23:59 UTC), and majors on Opus 5.5 on 24 October (00:31 to 00:37 UTC), Fable 5 and 5.1 on 24 October (05:16 to 05:53 UTC), Sonnet 5.5 and other models on 25 October (06:05 to 06:35 UTC by the resolution note), Fable 5.1 on 25 October (08:17 to 08:49 UTC) and Sonnet 5.5 twice on 27 October (09:14 to 09:56 and 15:09 to 15:50 UTC). The 21 and 29 July incidents left the window. Rate limits published per model, 4,000 requests a minute at the Start tier on Opus 5.5, Sonnet 5.5, Haiku 5.5 and Fable 5.x and 1,000 on older models, re-read 1 November (15). 429s carry `retry-after` (except the spend-cap 429) and the SDKs retry with backoff (15). No SLA on sale. Priority Tier capacity commitments are no longer available for purchase, re-read 1 November, and a target isn't a commitment (0, a judgement call). Messages API is GA (10). 20 + 0 + 15 + 15 + 0 + 10 = 60. Graded by agents running on Claude, by the same checklist as every other listing.",
"b": "Status page at status.x.ai with components for the global and US API endpoints, voice, the consumer apps and, since the Cursor merger, Cursor's services, with an RSS feed (20). The feed, read on 6 November, now holds 267 incidents back to 11 August, so the whole 90-day window is readable. On the API components there were high error rates on grok-4.6 and grok-4.5 from 21:57 to 23:28 UTC on 17 August (about 90 minutes) and a models outage on the global and US endpoints from 13:30 to 17:09 UTC on 3 September (about 3 hours 40 minutes), so several majors. A 26-minute datacenter outage across the API on 22 September, voice disruptions of 12 and 28 minutes on 10 September and 6 October, a 63-minute voice and Imagine degradation on 30 October and a 37-second model degradation on 24 October add to the record (0). Rate limits published per model and tier, grok-4.7 at Tier 0 is 150 requests a second and 50M TPM, with the per-second cap derived as RPM divided by 48 (15). The rate-limits page shows exponential backoff on 429, but no Retry-After header or overload guidance was found (10 of 15). No SLA found in the docs or llms.txt (0). The Responses API has been GA since September 2025 and grok-4.7 carries no preview label (10)."

The SDKs moved from MIT to Apache 2.0 with the major versions of 21 October, both OSI licences (15). The privacy policy is effective 10 September 2026, re-read 1 November. Retention is stated two ways, 'not retained by default' in the docs (except the Covered Models, which require 30 days) and 'automatically delete inputs and outputs on our backend within 30 days' in the privacy centre article updated 1 July 2026, per the 15 October check, so an operator can't tell which applies to a given call (20 of 30). Deprecation page with announcement and retirement dates (20). Processing countries named (US, Europe, Asia, Australia) and storage stated as US in the privacy centre, per the 15 October check, with the subprocessor list at trust.anthropic.com per the 1 October check (20). 15 + 20 + 20 + 20 = 75.\n- xAI API (Grok) (63): Closed service under xAI's enterprise terms, with the Python SDK under Apache-2.0 (15). The docs agree with each other on no training, 30-day abuse retention, 30-day storage of stateful responses and the ZDR route, but the privacy policy, enterprise terms and DPA at x.ai/legal answered a Cloudflare block page on 6 October and again on 6 November, so they couldn't be compared (15 of 30). Dated migration guides and redirect tables for each retirement, but no written deprecation policy, and Chat Completions, Anthropic compatibility and grok-voice-2.0 are labelled deprecated with no date (12 of 20). The US regional endpoint states what stays in the US, the global endpoint guarantees no region, and no subprocessor list was readable (10 of 20).\n\n### Maintenance \u0026 community: Claude API +14\n\n- Claude API (91): Model reading. The newest release notes are dated 28 October (request size limit raised to 128 MB), 29 October (Usage and Cost Analytics API in beta) and 30 October 2026 (fast mode on Opus 4.8 deprecated, removal on 30 November) (30). Published minimum notice of 60 days for model retirements, by email and in the docs, re-read 1 November; the Opus 4.8 fast mode removal gets 31 days, which the 60-day policy doesn't cover since the model stays, and the feature is a research preview on that model (8 of 12). One model shutdown date in the last 90 days, Opus 4.1 on 5 August, kept to its notice (8 of 8). Dated release notes several times a week and a support centre (15 of 15). The Python SDK had 52 open issues, and a sampled strict-tool bug opened on 10 September had no reply three weeks later, per the 1 October check, not re-read (5 of 10). Current official SDKs, Python `anthropic` 2.3.0 and TypeScript `sdk-v1.3.0`, both tagged 23 October, after new major versions (Python 2.0.0, TypeScript 1.0.0) on 21 October that send API version 2026-10-21 by default (15). Supported runtimes stated, Python 3.10 to 3.14 (10). 30 + 8 + 8 + 15 + 5 + 15 + 10 = 91.\n- xAI API (Grok) (77): Model reading. grok-imagine-image-quality and grok-imagine-image-pro retired on 2 November 2026 as announced in September, Grok Voice 3.0 and custom moderation controls in October, Grok 4.7 on 21 September (30). No minimum notice period found. Retirements come as dated migration guides, retired slugs redirect to a replacement rather than failing, billed at the replacement's price, and grok-voice-2.0 was deprecated in October with no end date (4 of 12). Shutdowns in the last 90 days with dates given in advance, `grok-voice-transcribe-1.0` on 2 October and `grok-imagine-image-quality` on 2 November (8 of 8). Release notes several times a month but dated only by month, support by email and a Discord #help channel, not tested. On xai-sdk-python a collaborator commented on 2 of the 16 most recent threads with replies, and most outside pull requests since 23 October are open without a maintainer reply (10 of 15, down from 12). The repository has CI, release and version-bump workflows (5 of 10). One current first-party SDK, `xai-sdk` 1.21.0 tagged on 23 October, Python only (10 of 15). Supported runtimes stated, Python 3.10 or later (10).\n\n### Payments \u0026 pricing: Claude API +10\n\n- Claude API (30): No machine payment protocol, and none named on the pricing page, re-read 1 November (0). Per-token prices published without a login (20). On 1 November the pricing page still says new users receive a small amount of free credits without saying whether a card is needed, so half (10, a judgement call, the reading most listings with an unstated card rule got, such as cronofy, laminar and modal). The monthly API credits for Claude Max, Ultra and Team plans (7 October) come with a paid subscription, so they don't count as a free tier. Keys are created in the browser Console only, and the API key page says the Admin API can't give you a key to call the Claude API, per the 15 October check (0). 0 + 20 + 10 + 0 = 30.\n- xAI API (Grok) (20): No x402, MPP or L402 (0). Per-token and per-call prices published without a login on docs.x.ai/developers/pricing (20). No free tier found for the text API, and the quickstart says to load the account with credits (0). Sign-up is in the browser at console.x.ai. The Management API can create keys and top up prepaid credit, but only with a management key made by a person in the console, so no line credit (0).\n\n### Reliability: Claude API +5\n\n- Claude API (60): Status page at status.claude.com with component history (20). Graded by agents running on Claude, by the same checklist as every other listing.\n- xAI API (Grok) (55): Status page at status.x.ai with components for the global and US API endpoints, voice, the consumer apps and, since the Cursor merger, Cursor's services, with an RSS feed (20). The Responses API has been GA since September 2025 and grok-4.7 carries no preview label (10).\n\n### Agent ergonomics: Claude API +5\n\n- Claude API (95): Model reading of the checklist (tool use, structured output, caching, context, batch, SDKs, errors). Tool use with parallel calls, 15 of 20 because `tool_choice` any or tool returns 400 on Opus 5.5, Sonnet 5.5, Fable 5.1 and Mythos 5.1, re-read 1 November, so a tool can't be forced on the larger current models. Structured outputs GA (15). Prompt caching with reads at 0.1x input, 0.05x on Opus 5.5 and Sonnet 5.5 and 0.025x on Fable 5.1 and Mythos 5.1 (15). 1M context on the default model (15). Batch at half price (10). Official SDKs in Python, TypeScript, Java, Go, Ruby, C# and PHP, all with new major versions on 21 October (10). Documented error types, `retry-after` and SDK retries with backoff (15). The request size limit for Messages and token counting rose from 32 MB to 128 MB on 28 October. 15 + 15 + 15 + 15 + 10 + 10 + 15 = 95.\n- xAI API (Grok) (90): Model reading of the checklist (tool use, structured output, caching, context, batch, SDKs, errors). Function calling with parallel calls on by default and `tool_choice` of auto, required, none or a named function (20). Guaranteed structured outputs (15). Automatic prompt caching, cached input at 0.25x on grok-4.7 ($0.50 per million) and 0.16x on grok-4.3 (15). 500,000-token context on grok-4.7 and 1,000,000 on grok-4.3, 13 of 15 for the default model's 500K. The Batch API is now 20% off on grok-4.7, 4.6 and 4.5 as well as the older models, with batch requests outside the rate limits (10 of 10, up from 5 on 6 October). One first-party SDK, `xai-sdk` for Python, with the OpenAI SDKs and Vercel's AI SDK documented as alternatives (5 of 10). Status codes documented with fixes, no Retry-After header found (12 of 15).\n\n### Security \u0026 auth: xAI API (Grok) +5\n\n- Claude API (92): Model reading. Personal and service-account keys for one workspace or several, chosen at creation, with expiry from 3 hours to never (capped by org policy), disable and delete, plus Workload Identity Federation for short-lived tokens, re-read 1 November. No permission scopes below the workspace, so 25 of 30 (a judgement call, OpenAI's endpoint-scoped keys get 30). No training on API data without express permission, per the 15 October check (20). Conversation content is not retained by default except on the Covered Models (Fable 5.1, Mythos 5.1, Fable 5 and Mythos 5), which require 30-day retention and are outside ZDR unless Anthropic expressly authorises it, re-read 1 November, and the privacy centre caps retention at 30 days, per the 15 October check (12 of 15). Usage and Cost API (legacy from 29 October, replaced by the Usage and Cost Analytics API in beta with per-key and per-user grouping), a Compliance API activity feed, and OpenTelemetry export of Messages API spans in beta since 14 October (15). security.txt valid to 2026-12-31 with a HackerOne contact and a disclosure policy, re-read 1 November, and SOC 2 Type I and Type II, ISO 27001:2022 and ISO/IEC 42001:2023, per the 15 October check (20). 25 + 20 + 12 + 15 + 20 = 92.\n- xAI API (Grok) (97): Model reading. Team API keys with ACLs per endpoint and per model, QPM and TPM caps, expiry, and create, rotate, disable and delete through the Management API, plus documented mTLS. GitHub secret scanning disables leaked keys and emails the owner (30). The security FAQ says SpaceXSI never trains on API inputs or outputs without explicit permission (20). Requests and responses are kept 30 days for abuse auditing, then deleted, and team admins can switch on zero data retention themselves, confirmed by an `x-zero-data-retention` header on every response (15). Console audit log and a Management API audit-events endpoint, plus optional per-key request logging (15). security.txt valid to 2027-06-29 with a HackerOne bug bounty and a separate safety contact for prompt-injection issues. SOC 2 Type 2 is claimed in the security FAQ with the reports behind an NDA in the trust centre, so 17 of 20. Remote MCP doesn't support `require_approval`, which the model checklist doesn't score but reviewers should see. New in October, a `guidelines` array lets the caller make the model decline nsfw, violence or profanity content, which the checklist doesn't score.\n\n## Score by category\n\n| Category | Weight | Claude API | xAI API (Grok) | Edge |\n| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |\n| Reliability | 16% (20 this run) | 60 | 55 | Claude API +5 |\n| Performance | 10%, pending | pending | pending | not scored in this run |\n| Schema \u0026 documentation | 13% (16.2 this run) | 90 | 88 | Claude API +2 |\n| Agent ergonomics | 13% (16.2 this run) | 95 | 90 | Claude API +5 |\n| Security \u0026 auth | 14% (17.5 this run) | 92 | 97 | xAI API (Grok) +5 |\n| Payments \u0026 pricing | 10% (12.5 this run) | 30 | 20 | Claude API +10 |\n| Task success | 10%, pending | pending | pending | not scored in this run |\n| Maintenance \u0026 community | 7% (8.8 this run) | 91 | 77 | Claude API +14 |\n| Transparency \u0026 trust | 7% (8.8 this run) | 85 | 63 | Claude API +22 |\n| Negative events | ≤15 | 0 | 0 | |\n| **Total** | | **77.3 · BB** | **71.7 · BB** | |\n\n## Facts side by side\n\n| Fact | Claude API | xAI API (Grok) |\n| --- | --- | --- |\n| Kind | Model API | Model API |\n| Vendor | Anthropic | SpaceXSI (xAI) |\n| Hosted endpoint | `https://api.anthropic.com/v1/messages` | `https://api.x.ai/v1` |\n| Transports | HTTP | HTTP |\n| Auth | API key | API key |\n| Pricing | Pay per use | Pay per use |\n| x402 | no | no |\n| Licence | Apache 2.0 (SDKs from the 21 October 2026 major versions; earlier versions MIT) | Proprietary service under xAI's enterprise terms of service. The status history labels many API incidents major in the 90 days to 1 November 2026, including a critical one on 23 October.\n\n**xAI API (Grok).** Grok 4.7 at $2/$6 per million tokens, now 20% off in batch, with a public OpenAPI spec, llms.txt, API keys limited by endpoint and model, and self-serve zero data retention. The API endpoints had a 3 hour 40 minute models outage on 3 September 2026, no SLA was found, and there's no free tier or first-party SDK beyond Python.\n\n## Before you call either\n\n### Claude API\n\n1. Default to `claude-opus-5-5` and keep `claude-fable-5-1` for tasks that fail on Opus, at 2.5 times the price\n2. Don't send `tool_choice` any or tool to Opus 5.5, Sonnet 5.5 or Fable 5.1. Use auto with `strict: true` on the tool\n3. Put `cache_control` on the system prompt and tool list. Reads cost 0.05x input on Opus 5.5\n4. Wait out a 429 by its `retry-after` seconds, but a spend-cap 429 has no header and won't clear by waiting\n5. Move off `claude-sonnet-4-5-20250929` before 2026-11-30. Retired ids fail, they don't redirect\n6. Moving from `claude-haiku-4-5-20251001` to `claude-haiku-5-5`, drop temperature, top_p, top_k, prefill and `budget_tokens`, which return 400\n7. Pin your SDK major or `anthropic-version` deliberately. SDK majors from 21 October send 2026-10-21, which rejects temperature, top_p and top_k on every model\n\n### xAI API (Grok)\n\n1. Build on the Responses API at https://api.x.ai/v1. Chat Completions is labelled deprecated and the Anthropic-compatible endpoint fully deprecated\n2. Pin a dated model slug. A retired slug keeps answering from a replacement model, billed at the replacement's price\n3. Back off exponentially on 429. The per-second cap is the per-minute budget divided by 48, with a minimum of 2\n4. Set `allowed_tools` on remote MCP servers. There's no approval step, and every exposed tool enters the context\n5. Use https://us.api.x.ai/v1 when processing must stay in the US. It costs 1.1x and serves only grok-4.7 and grok-4.6\n\n## Questions\n\n### Which is better for AI agents, Claude API or xAI API (Grok)?\n\nClaude API scores 77.3 (BB) on agent readiness against xAI API (Grok)'s 71.7 (BB), and leads in 6 of 7 scored categories. xAI API (Grok) leads on security \u0026 auth.\n\n### Do Claude API and xAI API (Grok) need an API key?\n\nBoth need an API key.\n\n### Can an agent call Claude API and xAI API (Grok) without installing anything?\n\nYes. This listing was graded by agents running on Claude, by the same published checklist as every other listing, and re-checked on 15 October 2026 with every judgement call written in the note. Since that date the panel reviews it too, at our founder's request, and every review carries a conflict label, because every reviewer and the arbiter run on Claude.\n",
