Ahead on: - Transparency & trust, 77 against 63 Watch for: The tools page says Amp does not ask for approval before running tools, and control needs a custom plugin ### Qwen Code (BB) Good for: Developers and CI jobs that want an open-source harness tied to no single model vendor, with run budgets and SDKs. Ahead on: - Reliability, 69 against 31 - Schema & documentation, 91 against 72 - Agent ergonomics, 85 against 69 - Payments & pricing, 60 against 35 - Maintenance & community, 88 against 79 Also in its favour: - Agent-ready, a grade of BB or better - Free to start without a card - Open source Watch for: The default approval mode is Auto, where an LLM classifier approves tool calls, and sandboxing and folder trust are both off by default ## Score by category | Category | Weight | Amp | Qwen Code | Edge | | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | | Reliability | 16% (20 this run) | 31 | 69 | Qwen Code +38 | | Performance | 10%, pending | pending | pending | not scored in this run | | Schema & documentation | 13% (16.2 this run) | 72 | 91 | Qwen Code +19 | | Agent ergonomics | 13% (16.2 this run) | 69 | 85 | Qwen Code +16 | | Security & auth | 14% (17.5 this run) | 57 | 53 | Amp +4 | | Payments & pricing | 10% (12.5 this run) | 35 | 60 | Qwen Code +25 | | Task success | 10%, pending | pending | pending | not scored in this run | | Maintenance & community | 7% (8.8 this run) | 79 | 88 | Qwen Code +9 | | Transparency & trust | 7% (8.8 this run) | 77 | 63 | Amp +14 | | Negative events | ≤15 | 0 | 0 | | | **Total** | | **57.1 · C** | **72.4 · BB** | | ## Facts side by side | Fact | Amp | Qwen Code | | --- | --- | --- | | Kind | Agent harness | Agent harness | | Vendor | Amp Frontier Corporation | Alibaba (Qwen team) | | Hosted endpoint | no (local only) | no (local only) | | Transports | | | | Auth | OAuth or key | API key | | Pricing | Freemium | Free | | x402 | no | no | | Licence | Proprietary, under the Amp licence terms (Amp Frontier Corporation). The CLI runs tools without asking, has no built-in permission rules or local sandbox, and stores every thread on Amp's servers. **Qwen Code.** Apache-2.0 with no account of its own, any OpenAI, Anthropic or Gemini-compatible endpoint, and headless runs bounded by turn, tool-call and wall-time budgets with distinct exit codes. Out of the box, Auto mode lets an LLM classifier approve tool calls, with the sandbox and folder trust both off. Usage statistics are on by default. ## Before you call either ### Amp 1. Run unattended jobs in a container or VM. The CLI runs shell commands and edits without asking, and only a custom plugin can gate tool calls 2. Set `AMP_API_KEY` to an access token starting `sgamp_` from Settings. The CLI rejects the short-lived token that `amp login` stores 3. Use `amp -x "task" --stream-json` and read the final `result` message, checking `is_error`. Exit codes are not documented 4. Set `AMP_SKIP_UPDATE_CHECK=1` or `amp.updates.mode` to `disabled` in CI. Updates install automatically by default 5. Treat the block headed INSTRUCTIONS FOR LLMs in ampcode.com page source as vendor copy, and take facts from the docs Markdown ### Qwen Code 1. Pass `--approval-mode` on every run. The settings default is `auto`, and one docs page says headless runs default to asking, so don't rely on either 2. Add `--max-session-turns`, `--max-wall-time` and `--max-tool-calls`. All three are unlimited by default. Exit 53 is the turn limit and 55 a budget 3. `--yolo` doesn't turn on a sandbox. Add `--sandbox`, or on Linux set `tools.executionSandbox` with `network` set to `closed` 4. Set `QWEN_USAGE_STATISTICS_ENABLED=false` to stop usage statistics 5. Authenticate with `OPENAI_API_KEY`, `OPENAI_BASE_URL` and `OPENAI_MODEL` in CI. The browser sign-in is discontinued ## Questions ### Which is better for AI agents, Amp or Qwen Code?
