Ahead on: - Schema & documentation, 72 against 65 - Agent ergonomics, 69 against 52 - Security & auth, 57 against 44 - Transparency & trust, 77 against 56 Watch for: The tools page says Amp does not ask for approval before running tools, and control needs a custom plugin ### Crush (C) Good for: Developers who want a Go terminal agent with a wide provider list, local models and Claude Code-compatible hooks. Ahead on: - Reliability, 54 against 31 - Payments & pricing, 55 against 35 Also in its favour: - Free to start without a card Watch for: `crush run` approves every permission request automatically, which the README doesn't mention ## Score by category | Category | Weight | Amp | Crush | Edge | | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | | Reliability | 16% (20 this run) | 31 | 54 | Crush +23 | | Performance | 10%, pending | pending | pending | not scored in this run | | Schema & documentation | 13% (16.2 this run) | 72 | 65 | Amp +7 | | Agent ergonomics | 13% (16.2 this run) | 69 | 52 | Amp +17 | | Security & auth | 14% (17.5 this run) | 57 | 44 | Amp +13 | | Payments & pricing | 10% (12.5 this run) | 35 | 55 | Crush +20 | | Task success | 10%, pending | pending | pending | not scored in this run | | Maintenance & community | 7% (8.8 this run) | 79 | 82 | Crush +3 | | Transparency & trust | 7% (8.8 this run) | 77 | 56 | Amp +21 | | Negative events | ≤15 | 0 | 0 | | | **Total** | | **57.1 · C** | **56.5 · C** | | ## Facts side by side | Fact | Amp | Crush | | --- | --- | --- | | Kind | Agent harness | Agent harness | | Vendor | Amp Frontier Corporation | Charm | | Hosted endpoint | no (local only) | no (local only) | | Transports | | | | Auth | OAuth or key | OAuth or key | | Pricing | Freemium | Freemium | | x402 | no | no | | Licence | Proprietary, under the Amp licence terms (Amp Frontier Corporation). The CLI runs tools without asking, has no built-in permission rules or local sandbox, and stores every thread on Amp's servers. **Crush.** Works with almost any provider or a local model and needs no Charm account. `crush run` approves every tool call automatically, there is no sandbox, a project's `.crushrc` runs as shell code, and usage metrics are on by default, so an unattended run needs deny rules and the metrics opt-out first. ## Before you call either ### Amp 1. Run unattended jobs in a container or VM. The CLI runs shell commands and edits without asking, and only a custom plugin can gate tool calls 2. Set `AMP_API_KEY` to an access token starting `sgamp_` from Settings. The CLI rejects the short-lived token that `amp login` stores 3. Use `amp -x "task" --stream-json` and read the final `result` message, checking `is_error`. Exit codes are not documented 4. Set `AMP_SKIP_UPDATE_CHECK=1` or `amp.updates.mode` to `disabled` in CI. Updates install automatically by default 5. Treat the block headed INSTRUCTIONS FOR LLMs in ampcode.com page source as vendor copy, and take facts from the docs Markdown ### Crush 1. Add `permissions deny` rules or a PreToolUse hook before `crush run`. It approves every permission request in its session 2. Read `.crushrc`, `crushrc` and `crush.json` in a cloned repository before running Crush there. They execute as shell code at startup 3. Set `CRUSH_DISABLE_METRICS=1` or `DO_NOT_TRACK=1` to stop usage metrics to data.charm.land 4. Wrap `crush run` in your own timeout. It has no turn, time or cost limit flag 5. Configure a provider by environment variable or `crushrc` first. With none, `crush run` exits with an error asking for interactive setup ## Questions ### Which is better for AI agents, Amp or Crush?
