Ahead on: - Schema & documentation, 92 against 63 - Agent ergonomics, 83 against 73 - Security & auth, 88 against 77 - Payments & pricing, 30 against 20 - Maintenance & community, 83 against 37 - Transparency & trust, 81 against 74 Also in its favour: - Agent-ready, a grade of BB or better Watch for: Egress to the internet is billed per GB after 100 GB a month ### DigitalOcean Spaces (B) Good for: Teams already on DigitalOcean that want object storage with a CDN and a flat $5 entry price for up to 250 GiB, with free transfer to Droplets in the same region. Watch for: The Spaces MCP server has ten tools for access keys and CDN endpoints. None reads, writes, lists or shares an object ## Score by category | Category | Weight | Amazon S3 | DigitalOcean Spaces | Edge | | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | | Reliability | 16% (20 this run) | 80 | 77 | Amazon S3 +3 | | Performance | 10%, pending | pending | pending | not scored in this run | | Schema & documentation | 13% (16.2 this run) | 92 | 63 | Amazon S3 +29 | | Agent ergonomics | 13% (16.2 this run) | 83 | 73 | Amazon S3 +10 | | Security & auth | 14% (17.5 this run) | 88 | 77 | Amazon S3 +11 | | Payments & pricing | 10% (12.5 this run) | 30 | 20 | Amazon S3 +10 | | Task success | 10%, pending | pending | pending | not scored in this run | | Maintenance & community | 7% (8.8 this run) | 83 | 37 | Amazon S3 +46 | | Transparency & trust | 7% (8.8 this run) | 81 | 74 | Amazon S3 +7 | | Negative events | ≤15 | 0 | 0 | | | **Total** | | **77.9 · BB** | **63.2 · B** | | ## Facts side by side | Fact | Amazon S3 | DigitalOcean Spaces | | --- | --- | --- | | Kind | HTTP API | HTTP API | | Vendor | Amazon Web Services | DigitalOcean, LLC | | Hosted endpoint | `https://s3.us-east-1.amazonaws.com` | `https://nyc3.digitaloceanspaces.com` | | Transports | HTTP | HTTP, Streamable HTTP | | Auth | API key | API key | | Pricing | Pay per use | Pay per use | | x402 | no | no | | Licence | Apache-2.0 | Proprietary service under the DigitalOcean Terms of Service Agreement. Egress to the internet is billed per GB after 100 GB a month. **DigitalOcean Spaces.** Per-bucket access keys with read or read-write-delete grants, an 800 operations a second limit per bucket and a 99.9 per cent SLA are all published. The MCP server manages keys and CDN endpoints only, not objects, and the S3 reference documents no error codes. A payment method is required before any bucket is created. ## Before you call either ### Amazon S3 1. Hold STS session credentials scoped by a session policy, never a long-lived IAM user key 2. Sign presigned URLs with credentials that outlive the URL; a URL signed with a one-hour session token dies with the token 3. Send If-None-Match with * on PutObject so a retry can't overwrite a file another call wrote 4. Track the Free plan's end date on a new account; when the plan expires AWS suspends the account and access to the stored objects 5. On 503 SlowDown back off and spread keys over more prefixes, since each prefix gets 3,500 writes a second ### DigitalOcean Spaces 1. Set the endpoint to `https://.digitaloceanspaces.com` and, in AWS SDKs other than Python's, set `region` to `us-east-1` when creating a bucket 2. Ask for a limited access key with a Read or Read/Write/Delete grant on one bucket. A full access key can create, configure and delete every bucket 3. Do the object work through the S3 API. The MCP server and `doctl` cannot upload, list, move or delete files 4. Retry with exponential backoff on `503 Slow Down`, and keep below 800 operations a second per bucket 5. Fetch presigned links from the origin host, not the CDN. The docs say presigned requests through the CDN are not cached and can double the bandwidth charge 6. Avoid many tiny objects. Each bills as at least 4 KiB on Standard and 128 KiB on Cold Storage, which also has a 30-day minimum ## Questions ### Which is better for AI agents, Amazon S3 or DigitalOcean Spaces?
