# Cypherpunks write code, and now agents read it (slim) > Vlad Cealicu on REA, an open-source tool that lets a coding agent take apart any program and rebuild it, which went from its first release in July to over 100,000 GitHub stars. Why it's what the cypherpunks wanted, and why the explosion of software is only starting. - Full: https://www.anchorterminal.com/blog/rea-cypherpunks-write-code.md (~1,350 tokens) · this version ~630 tokens · JSON https://www.anchorterminal.com/blog/rea-cypherpunks-write-code.json · canonical https://www.anchorterminal.com/blog/rea-cypherpunks-write-code - Index: https://www.anchorterminal.com/llms.txt · API: https://www.anchorterminal.com/api/v1/index.json · Updated: 2026-10-13 By Vlad Cealicu, 13 October 2026. 604 words, about 3 min to read. ## What REA is REA is an open-source MCP server and command line tool, MIT licensed, that gives a coding agent the tools to reverse engineer software [[1]](#ref-1). You install it with one command, `npx rea-agents setup`, pick the agents you use (Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Gemini CLI and most others that take a local MCP server), and then you just ask. ## The numbers - 12 July: first release on npm - 73,651: npm downloads in the week to 10 October - 79,095: npm downloads this year, so almost all of them last week - 100k+: GitHub stars REA, by 12 October 2026 The first version went up on npm on 12 July, and the latest, 6.4.0, on 11 October [[3]](#ref-3). ## Why I think it's what the cypherpunks wanted Eric Hughes wrote "[Cypherpunks write code](https://www.localghost.ai/cypherpunk)" in 1993, and in the same paragraph, "We know that software can't be destroyed and that a widely dispersed system can't be shut down" [[5]](#ref-5). The idea was that you don't ask permission, you build the thing, and once it's out it stays out. ## The explosion of software is just starting If an agent can rebuild an app's feature in an afternoon, software stops being scarce. We see a small version of it in our own directory. ## The catch Taking software apart is legal in a lot of places for things like interoperability and security research, and not everywhere, and licences and terms add their own rules. And an MCP server that can read any binary on your machine is a lot of reach to hand an agent. --- - Older: [Decision models, part two: train your own](https://www.anchorterminal.com/blog/decision-models-train-your-own.md) - All posts: https://www.anchorterminal.com/blog/index.md ## References Read on 12 October 2026.
